  1. Same here - earlier stuff: varies from so so to OK, later stuff: no thanks. Would later stuff include the anniversary Mosaic box? Just wondering if I should consider it. I would consider the Mosaic box mid-late period, I think his tone was the brightest and most grating during this period. Great technique, but I feel he had a better, more rounded tone in the 50s-60s and now as well. I have the Mosaic Phil Woods box and I would only recommend it to dedicated Phil Woods fans. I don't really listen to it much and I am one! I actually think his tone is really good now, much warmer these days than the 80s-90s.
  2. I love Phil Woods' alto sound, and he, in my opinion is carrying the lineage and history of alto in his sound. I too agree his most creative playing would be in the European Rhythm Machine, but I enjoy all periods of his career. I really like the Oliver Nelson and Quincy Jones box sets from Mosaic Records, the sets show off his solo style and lead alto skill. From his more recent recordings I have his two "American Songbook" albums-- good, but run of the mill and "Voyage" which is live and exceptional. Highly recommend that one. The Quincy Jones tribute recording is fine, but not outstanding.
  3. I missed out on the Curtis Fuller set, I wish I could have gotten it, especially since it was "cheap" when it was in print! I am listening to Mosaic's HRS sessions, disk 1, Pee Wee Russell. He was quite the original, I also love him in the Oliver Nelson big band set!
  4. Ouch! That's great that Mosaic is replacing the disk, but still, OUCH! Hopefully you'll get the disk soon!
  5. It's sad seeing such grand places in ruin. But look at the Roman and Greek ruins...
  6. The new Ellington big band set as well! Disk 7, "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and "Alabamy Home." This is Ellington, so much going on! Over repeated listens, it almost gets to be overwhelming...there is so much music in a three minute song!!! It's CRAZY. I always considered myself to be partial to the mid 50s-1960ish period in Ellingtonia...this set along with the small band Mosaic set is changing my mind---or at least forcing me to moderate my stance. I am so glad Mosaic restores such great music and puts in such a classy package!
  7. Next up you'll get Julian Dash, too! Great set! I dig him too! Nice strong tone, good early R&B'ish ideas, and probably a better player than he got credit for. SOOOOO The Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions came in the mail last night, everything is in GREAT shape and I paid a little less than the set retailed for new. Good deal! The sound quality is superb, and the variety is staggering (in a good way ). I am listening to disk one now---this is going to be a VALUED set, so unlike most Mosaic sets. BTW, I will be getting the Mosaic HRS sessions in the mail today, and hopefully I can be disciplined and listen to that when I'm finished with the Capitol set.
  8. What could be in-store for their next release??? Any ideas?
  9. Listening to The Complete CBS Buck Clayton Jam Sessions disk 1. It's nice to hear Charlie Fowlkes' great tone in a small group setting, instead of anchoring the Basie sax section. I had never heard Lem Davis (alto sax) play before and it's nice to hear what he's about too. I NEED to listen to something else than Mosaics....probably 3 weeks straight. But then again, I paid good money for 'em, might as well get some enjoyment out of 'em!
  10. Sonny Stitt Complete Roost Recordings, Disk 7. I come back to this set often if I want swingin', straight-ahead, saxophone. Love Malcolm Addey's remastering, these sessions sound great Now, when will the Lunceford Mosaic come out? Patience....it's on the second week of the new year....
  11. Well, I missed the Eldridge set! I'm thinking of getting an OOP set. He's one of my favorite trumpet players and the variety in that set seems really appealing. Esp. the Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie sides.
  12. Newly acquired CBS Buck Clayton Jam Sessions (MD6-144) 0483/5000. CD's were still sealed, box and booklet were in great shape!!! Sooo excited. I've listened to the first disk and can tell, while this won't be revelatory, it will be music to sit back to with my feet tapping and a glass of scotch in my hand.
  13. I found the sound got better (less harsh) around disk 5. Hope you will find the same thing. I just played disc 5 and the harshness was still there. I'm now listening to track 6 on disc 6 and so far the sound seems a bit better on this disc. [edit] The sound on disc 6 is indeed better than on the previous 5. Great music! Initially I was SLIGHTLY disappointed with the sound of the first 4 to 5 disks (unrealistic expectations?), comparing it to the Lasker remastered/restored Ellington small groups set---I failed to factor in that disks 1-5 in the new Ellington big band set were recorded BEFORE the Ellington small group set was recorded. Of course recording technology and even perhaps Lasker's source material was better for the small band set. I'm GLAD you (and everyone on the forum) seems to be enjoying the set. I certainly am, and will continue to uncover "new things" about this music for some time to come.
  14. I found the sound got better (less harsh) around disk 5. Hope you will find the same thing.
  15. Warning? Hey, I'd consider that a tip! I've tried a can, and it is truly a wide awake ddrunk. I have mixed feelings about the FDA pulling it from the market. But, if it got into the hands of underaged kids- it could spell disaster.
  16. I listened to disk 4 from the Lester Young set, and am now listening to Hank Mobley disk 1. Can not get over Hank's Prank! Now that's jazz!
  17. Ellington Reprise set. Disk 4. "Second time around." I haven't listened to this for awhile, Johnny Hodges is the sensual ballad master. Things REALLY ain't they way they used to be. Nobody plays this way anymore. Sad.
  18. You're not weak or crazy. You're a man with good taste. Thanks! That makes me feel slightly better. I would have bought them from Mosaic but I didn't get into Mosaics until 2004 and it was too late for the Buck Clayton, the others I just missed out on. I am looking forward to adding 3 more Mosaics to my collection!!!! And, I will fill you all in on my impressions. Though I am sure most have heard this music before. I think the Buck Clayton is gonna be great, the other two...I just HAD to get. I mean, they would be lonely without each other..right? You're not weak or crazy. You're a man with good taste. Oh, I forgot...to say thanks! I've always loved jazz and felt a strong connection to this music despite my peers liking hip hop and rap.
  19. I had a moment of weakness/craziness and bought from Amazon sellers; 3 Mosaic sets: HRS Sessions, Capitol Sessions and Buck Clayton Jam sessions
  20. Perhaps I should send Mosaic a suggestion. Do you all think it's a viable project?
  21. Thanks for the heads up!!! Is the sound quality ok?
  22. Oliver Nelson disk 2 at work. Increasing productivity
  23. The 47-52 Columbia would be GREAT! I don't have much from that period. Anything Ellington I would pick up, if Mosaic did it!!!
  24. You SHOULD buy both sets!!!! They are fantastic
