  1. I would strongly suggest checking out Kenneth Tse, gorgeous tone. He was a student of Eugene Rousseau, Richtmeyer and now teaches at The University of Iowa. Quartet music is out there as well, such as the Prizm quartet or the Miami Saxophone quartet.
  2. Just received the Tolliver and Lunceford sets this evening! Tough decision about which to play first, chose the Lunceford. So far so GOOD! Sound quality top notch! I was concerned because I think the sound on the Artie Shaw and Armstrong (to an extent) is a little thin and harsh. The first disk sounds very good, especially considering it includes music recorded in 1934. First impression is that this will be a set that I will REALLY enjoy. I'll try to piece together a review when I finish with the set. If you like pre-war big band BUY THIS NOW. No regrets!
  3. Just put in the Jimmie Lunceford disk 1. AMAZING sound and musicianship! I was wary because Andreas Meyer was the remastering guy (didn't care for the Armstrong or the Artie Shaw Mosaic sets sound...perhaps it was the best he could do). At any rate this should be a very fun next few weeks discovering this new music (to me)!!!
  4. Just got my shipping notice last night. The Lunceford and Tolliver sets should be in my hands Tuesday!!!
  5. Went on with this one... into CD4 by now - great! Blargh ... yet another set on my 'bypass' list that I now feel an insatiable urge to own. It is a good boxed set, that I don't regret owning. However, the set is redundant---with that said, it's redundant with Stitt's great playing, supporting cast, etc. It just is the BASICALLY the same thing for 9CD's, a big band session that's OK, and a bunch of blowing sessions. If you just need a cheap Stitt fix, get the recording Sonny Stitt sits in with the Oscar Peterson Trio, it's excellent
  6. Woody Herman Complete Columbia Recordings (great musical and sound quality) and earlier the Artie Shaw set, starting to find value in that set...finally. I'm enjoying the Shaw a lot more with my headphones than my home sound system
  7. Hi All, Just was relaxing on this Friday night, and found some surprises on the Mosaic website! Sound samples and it also appears they are available for pre-order. I have ordered the Tolliver and the Lunceford. Love the sound samples, and am VERY excited for the Lunceford (since I don't have much from that band). Anybody order the Getz Norgran LP set yet???
  8. I was so impressed with the musicianship in this boxed set. The sound quality was superb as well!
  9. This has been on my wishlist for some time! What are your thoughts on the sound quality? I would assume the band is killer! I will probably order it with the MJQ to save on shipping. THANKS!
  10. It is SO worth it. I think there are several used copies on Amazon. I can go back to it and always hear something beautiful and swingin' The booklet is one of the best that Mosaic compiled!
  11. "Steppin' Into Swing Society" by Mercer Ellington. Lot's of great cats in the band. Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Shorty Baker...Hodges, Webster, Strayhorn, etc.!!! Never heard this music before, not groundbreaking, but great to hear "new" music. Especially for such a fan of this music...all things Ellingtonian.
  12. Are you sure Ron McMaster will do the MJQ set? Seems strange to me, because it's Atlantic material and as an EMI/Blue Note engineer he's usually not mastering non-EMI/Blue Note material. It may seem strange, but it is what it is. I was just trying to provide accurate information that people may want to know. That is all. Michael Cuscuna has confirmed that the MJQ set will indeed be mastered by Ron McMaster. Scott Wenzel just mentioned Malcom Addey to me as the mastering engineer of the MJQ set. Scott just told me it would be Ron McMaster. So...it's been McMaster all along. That's what I was told too (so I posted that fact on March 15th). I wouldn't post something like that without having a good source (Mosaic's Fred). Perhaps I'm taking it the wrong way (or blowing things out of proportion) but, where's the trust?!?! Geez, I was just trying to help (Mosaic enthusiasts) with initial post of who was remastering what...
  13. Thanks for the update! Very interesting....hmm. I would much prefer Malcolm Addey. We shall have to wait and see. If you hear anything else, keep us posted.
  14. Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions--Disk 7. Benny Carter and His Orchestra . He had a great band, and he was of course, a masterful musician.
  15. OK, OK---I was at work when I wrote that, and I was really thinking of Foster after reading the article. But of course, Lockjaw was in and out of the Basie band and, I'm sure, intimidated all the tenor players in the band. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis knew how to get around on those changes too. Jaws was GREAT! Lockjaw had the ultimate swagger. I never tire of hearing him.
  16. He may not be a giant (or an original) in the sense of an Ellington, Coltrane, Miles (etc.)--but of the living jazz musicians, he is right up there. I would consider his arranging skill to put him in the "giant" category. He arranged a heck of a lot of music for the Basie band, and look at his playing and arranging credits! Crazy long. His playing was great, with influences of Lester, Stitt and later on-Coltrane. I don't think I can think of a player that owned Jumpin' at the Woodside quite like Foster (other than the original, Lester Young). I'm not coming down on you, gregmo, in the least, but I needed to give props to Frank. Props to Foss!
  17. Listening to the Duke Ellington Small Groups Mosaic set. In specific, "Pyramid." Hodges ALWAYS sounds good. Lots of great playing, I am so glad Mosaic decided to do this project. The music is so deep. Really looking forward to the Lunceford and am hoping the sound will be comparable.
  18. Are you sure Ron McMaster will do the MJQ set? Seems strange to me, because it's Atlantic material and as an EMI/Blue Note engineer he's usually not mastering non-EMI/Blue Note material. 19. Hey guys, about the remastering weirdness, I just copied the email that I received from Mosaic's Fred. I sent an email asking why I hadn't gotten emails from Mosaic recently and who would be doing the remastering. Here's the email: Checked the records and you are a strong supporter of Mosaic Records. I've readded your e-mail to the list (not sure why it was dropped). You are on the catalog mail list and the last one sent was in November. Mastering: Sam Rivers - Jon Horwich Charles Tolliver - Malcolm Addey MJQ - Ron McMaster Lunceford - Andreas Meyer Regards, Fred
  20. Just got an email back from Mosaic and the remastering for the upcoming sets will be....drumroll.... THEY WILL BE.... Sam Rivers--Jon Horwich Charles Tolliver--Malcolm Addey MJQ--Ron McMaster Lunceford--Andreas Meyer I was thinking Andreas Meyer might be doing the Lunceford set, since he's done the Shaw and the Armstrong. Hopefully it turns out great! There it is!
  21. I am most excited about the Lunceford set! Gotta love Willie Smith! I wonder who they are going to get to do sound? I am hoping for Malcolm Addey, actually, I am going to send an email asking about sound for each set. I'll report back.
  22. I have been waiting for this "official" announcement for some time! I think I'm going to have to get all of the offerings! (Well, maybe not) But they all look great. Also, the Tolliver Select caught me off guard, I had no idea that was in the pipeline! FINALLY, they all are coming out in the May/June time frame, which means Mosaic madness and also a lower checking account balance...
  23. Having a piano centric evening with The Complete Master Jazz Piano Series; Sir Charles Thompson disk. Relaxed, nice and swingin'
  24. Mosaic Complete Roulette Studio Sessions. The session called "The Legend." Great tunes that the Basie band hardly played on a regular basis, except "Easy Money." Marshal Royal was out sick on this date so Benny Carter played 2nd alto and Frank Wess played lead, and what a fine sound he got!
