  1. Thanks for posting! I too agree about it being hard to believe Hentoff had never heard the Columbias before ...At least he was honest!
  2. The Complete Roulette Live Recordings of Count Basie and His Orchestra. Disk 1 start to finish These recordings are timeless. I can't imagine what the Basie band was like in person, say 1959? It must have been a wall of sound and swing: from Marshal Royal's vibrato laden lead alto, to Snooky's piercing lead trumpet, not to mention the rhythm section and every MUSICIAN in between. They were the hippest, most swingin' band in the land. Later probably my newly acquired Onzy Matthews Select, ok so far...good in spots.
  3. Just voted! I think it works...no hanging chads here..!
  4. The Bennie Green is a fantastic Mosaic Select. Great playing and great arrangements. I am TICKED that I missed out on the Tal Farlow (again), I had an offsite meeting for work today...all I can say is, I would have SNAPPED that up!!!
  5. Thanks for the feedback! I will be ordering the Chu Berry set in May along with the MJQ set so I can save on shipping. Really the only Chu Berry I have is the few sessions included with the Lionel Hampton set (which will become redundant once I get the Chu set...) but it will be interesting to compare the remastering of the sessions. Also, can't wait for the Lunceford!!!
  6. I USUALLY try to have 4 or 5 "performance ready" reeds ready to go for any gig. Perhaps with his travels, the different climate changes have something to do with his reeds. Maybe he remembers 30 years ago when reeds were good and is just frustrated! Maybe he is the type of player that just unwraps a box of reeds and plays a brand new reed that plays well.
  7. I've been on the fence about this set for a while, thoughts? Do you come back to it often?
  8. I've had few GREAT reeds in my life. I usually can get 3-4 to be very good in a box of 10. There are usually 3 crappy reeds in the box that I don't care to even work on to get to play better. If you don't have a good reed you don't got sh#t. Funny, I'm not very picky about clarinet reeds...
  9. #196 The Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman. Got it for $80 and it's mint I am digging this, and am pleasantly surprised I am playing Mosaic catch up from when I was a poor college student. Slowly but surely I actually love the more commercial sides and the bands playing for the most part is superb! I guess he always had great bands.
  10. Just ordered the Onzy Matthews Mosaic Select (ecxited )and recently received the Mosaic Woody Herman Capitol Recordings which is surprisingly good Great sound and great players---Herman sounds very good during these years on both alto and clarinet.
  11. Not sure if many are into the great lead altoist Marshal Royal, but he recorded on Concord in the late 70s and up to his death. There are some teriffic small group recordings and there would be enough material for a 3cd set. Perhaps I have already put this up or mentioned it in another thread...but here it is. Albums: Snooky and Marshal's Album Marshal Royal: First Chair Marshal Royal: Royal Blue There were also numerous other Concord records that he appeared as a sideman. Anybody think this is viable?
  12. Yes it is. I'm looking forward to this. Agreed. I'm surprised that Mosaic is even talking about long term future projects, given all of the potential issues that can come up. Maybe things are looking up for Mosaic!
  13. Very good topic!!! I return to The Count Meets The Duke (on Columbia) and Miles Davis' Milestones and Kind of Blue. Also, Sinatra at the Sands with Count Basie. I'm sure there are more, but these come to mind first.
  14. You'd better read the last paragraph of the post David (Ghost) linked to again, there’s no anticipated date of release yet for the Hawkins. Good point!
  15. I am SO EXCITED. WOW! This is wonderful, now they just need to come out on schedule WITH NO DELAYS!!! If indeed these do drop in May, that will mean we will have 3-4 brand new Mosaics to choose from in one month!!! The Hawkins and Lunceford are going to be monumental. Wonder who they will get for remastering...? THANKS FOR THE UPDATE! I will be getting the MJQ set in May, but I am truly excited about this news.
  16. What do you think of the Django set? This type of music I have very little of, and was wondering the enjoyment/replay quotient.
  17. I've got both and enjoy both. I would decide based on if you enjoy big band or small group bop.
  18. For me, I skip the JFK speeches and get to the music (which is beautiful..the Phil Woods 3/4 waltz ballad...beautiful). I agree though, kind of weird. Let us know what you think of the Benedetti set when you get it!!!
  19. I have all of them except the Django, Parker and the Hackett so I have some choices to make (I REALLY, REALLY can't order all of them...I'm overcoming my Mosaic addiction...). With that said, of the sets on sale, the only one I kind of regret getting, is the Sarah Vaughan. I LOVE Sassy, but the Mosaic set has never really clicked for me. I would highly suggest the Mobley and Turrentine sets. The Mobley, I consider ESSENTIAL. The Herman was a pleasant surprise. I am an Ellington and Basie devotee, and I found the Herman set amazing. Sound quality is stunning, the arrangements are top notch and creative and the band is stacked with great players! The Oliver Nelson set may not be everyones cup of tea, but look at the names in the bands. Phil Woods, Snooky Young, Joe Newman, Grady Tate, on and on! Again, superb recording quality and players. Oliver Nelson was a genius and if you are on the fence, I play this set often.
  20. Getz and Tjader's performance of Vince Guaraldi's Ginza Samba is perfection. But I'm not paying for it a second time to buy an insignificant increase in fidelity. I don't understand why Concord isn't issuing unreleased-on-CD Concord Record sessions, as well as alternates and previously unreleased material from the Concord vaults. They're idiots. Totally agree about all of the unreleased Concord recordings from the 70s-80s. I am thinking in particular of the Marshal Royal recordings that are only on LP. There's great music!!! I've even bugged Mosaic about it....who knows
  21. Hi, my local record store had an LP with Stan Getz joining the Basie Band. I listened to it, ok performance and ok recording. I think it was either on a Birdland tour or at Birdland in the early 50s. I may check my Count Basie Bio-Discography. I don't know if it's on cd. From what I remember he was only on one or two tracks. Hope that helps. Getz sounded like Getz, but give me Frank Foster on that tune any day.
  22. Oliver Nelson: The Argo, Verve and Impulse recordings. GREAT STUFF! Great sound, recording quality and musicianship. Not to mention the Oliver Nelson arrangements!
  23. I was on vacation in So. Cal. and stopped by Amoeba Records in Hollywood and picked up: Bennie Green Select, Jack Teagarden Capitol and replaced my CD-R collection of the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band recordings! Total: $175.99, money well spent!!!
  24. Having the Buddy Rich set (and loving "mainstream" small group jazz) I would say that this set is enjoyable but not essential.
