  1. Not sure about a CD, but Larson did the cover for Jim Hall's book, Exploring Jazz Guitar
  2. Yo, Judge.... http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_9...Pants+%26+Jeans Comfortable and stylish for today's judge-on-the-go
  3. Yeah, I've seen that one in a local CD shop. Wtf?! 'Ball doesn't seem to have a lot of luck. This is a VHS video I own... (click to enlarge) Still, one Adderley is much like another, right?
  4. There can really be no excuse for this abomination. Ugly, incongruous... and back to front!
  5. I find this pretty horrendous. More irritatingly, it's a fine album.
  6. Chavs and wankers - 2 reasons I stay out of GB. Wise choice. A few months back, I was walking past the book department in an HMV. Two chavs were standing in front of the display, staring blankly. Finally, one turns to the other and says... "I can't read books. Does my fuckin' head in."
  7. Nice idea, but didn't Clinton try this already?

  9. No. Not if you count the Michel Legrand Legrand Jazz session for Columbia on which they both appeared.
  10. I just heard a boot of a gig in Tokyo on January 22nd, 1975. Absolutely amazing! One of the most intense Miles shows I've ever heard.
  11. Actually, it was usually Holzman who soloed, while Irving was primarily playing grooves and colours. Kei Akagi was probably the most talented of the late period keyboardists (I haven't heard enough of the band when Joey DeFrancesco was there to make a judgement on his contribution) but they were pretty much all there primarily to weave textures around the soloists (usually Miles, Garrett & Foley). Pity the group with Johnson didn't have longer. He sounded promising. As for the 70s band, Miles seemed more concerned with rhythm than anything melodic or harmonically complex. With Reggie Lucas chugging away there seems little that an additional instrument could add although Miles' own rudimentary organ stabs worked surprisingly well most of the time. A virtuoso would probably have just got in the way.
  12. The BBC are reporting that Boris Yeltsin has died. No details yet.
  13. Sonny Simmons- Staying on the Watch
  14. Very sad news! I have to admit to being slow to appreciate Mr. Hill (apart from Points, of course). However, his work has increasingly been finding its way into rotation for me in recent months. (I bought Dance With Death only a couple of days ago). I'm finding the more work I put into listening to him, the more it repays. Will be having an Andrew Hill weekend, I think.
  15. From WWUH Jazz Pronunciation Guide: Ayler, Albert eye-ler From New England Jazz Radio Cooperative Pronunciation Guide: Ayler, Albert eye-ler Of course, they could have it wrong. Stuart Broomer (who met the brothers) told me they each had a different preference for the pronunciation of his name. Now, I don't remember which one preferred which...... Carl Woideck's notes from the book included in the Holy Ghost set (p.191): ...The most unusual answer I got from the Ayler brothers that evening same when I asked them how to pronounce their surname. Don said A-ler (rhyming with "tailor") and Albert said Eye-ler!
  16. Anyone heard the album from last year, Afro Strut? I have Waltz and dug it and heard a few tracks from Strut that sounded good but didn't get round to buying it. It seems to have pretty much disappeared (not even listed at AMG).
  17. In addition to the superb Loronix site, it's also well worth having a nose around here: http://abracadabra-br.blogspot.com/index.html A real mix of styles and eras. There's an interesting podcast here: http://www.miscvanguard.blogspot.com/ Tends towards newer stuff, but it's worth a listen and the current list of shows includes three dedicated to the music of Hermeto Pascoal
  18. Played by Philip Baker Hall, who also turns up in an episode of Curb.
  19. Papa Rosco Rockefeller 's what I'm talkin' 'bout
  20. It was only a matter of time. You can now buy Britney's hair! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6378199.stm At only $1 million it's a real- ahem- snip...
