Let's Reopen Old Wounds!
Johnny E replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I couldn't disagree more... Well, I guess I could, but I won't. I just disagree. -_- -
Much of your reactions to Copeland's comments confirm his point. Many of us take "jazz" way to seriously. It's just a label people put on things so they can make selling "product" easier. It's all music folks. The true innovators don’t get hung up on labels because they are too busy internalizing ALL the music they hear, regardless of genre. Copeland simply says what he says because he's smart enough to know that a large majority of 'jazz people' are pretentious snobs that wouldn’t know irony or sarcasm if it came wrapped in a Coleman Hawkins saxophone solo.

The bands tour of the west coast begins in Davis, CA and takes them through much of California and southern Oregon. The tour includes appearances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkeley and beyond. Reptet is a sextet consisting of six multi-instrumentalists all of whom are members of the internationally acclaimed Monktail Creative Music Concern based out of Seattle, WA. They have established themselves as a group of considerable excitement, flair and vision while simultaneously debunking preconceived notions of what a jazz group ought to be. Their music has been aired on radio stations across the United States and Europe, Reptet’s new CD, entitled Do This! Was chosen CD of the year by Alex Gelfand of Jazziz Magazine, was chosen as a finalist for Jazz CD of the Year by the Independent Music Awards, and was chosen one of the top 10 recordings of the Year both Duck Baker (Jazz Times) and Kenny Weir of the Melbourne Herald Sun (Australia’s largest read daily newspaper). They recently won two Earshot Golden Ear Awards (best of Northwest jazz) for ‘Outside’ Jazz Group and Best Performance (as part of the Monktail Raymond Scott Project).

I guess so. But why didn't he do a trial run with that hand held camera stuffed all up in his grill? That was the stupidest fucking thing I ever saw. That's all I needed was a nasty-assed close up of some dweebs face while he struts around singing about how fine he is and how his baby did him wrong. No thanks, give me an unprofessional street performer banging on tin cans any day.

Chunks? If that's chunky to you then what type of girls do you like?

Jimmy Mak's or The Blue Monk (Dr. Lonnie Smith just played there last week) are the places to check out in Portland. Some others along the west coast would be Sam Bond's Garage in Eugene, OR and The Mobius in Asland, OR. Check out Moody's in Truckee, CA, Downtown Brewing Co in San Luis Obisbo, Pearl's Jazz in Frisco, the Baked Potato in LA, and Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. (I'll PM you all the contact info tomorrow). As far as Seattle goes, just say the word and I'll hook up a Reptet/Organissimo double bill. What time frame are you guys looking at?

It's a CD which contains five excellent performances by the John Coltrane Quartet from two occasions when drummer Roy Haynes filled in for Elvin Jones. Although Haynes had a different approach on the drums than Jones, he fit in perfectly with the group, stimulating Coltrane to play brilliantly throughout these two sessions.

It's a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage exhibits loyalty to the hostage-taker, in spite of the danger (or at least risk) in which the hostage has been placed. Stockholm is also sometimes discussed in reference to other situations with similar tensions, such as battered person syndrome, rape cases, child abuse cases, and bride kidnapping.

I will be scanning and posting shortly, but we got a half page spread (with fine band photo) and the top slot on his top 10 list. He also left these words of praise: Reptet - Do This! (Monktail) This Seattle sextet does it all: it grooves, it rocks, it squawks - occasionally, it even talks. Mostly, it sounds like a New Orleans jazz band on crystal meth.
