  1. I saw Paul Allen's blues act last night, who played after my band and before a smokin' Ray Charles tribute band. This thread doesn't have a requirement that there are actual musicians involved...? Most of the Trailblazers were there, as it was their VIP party. Great food, good drinks, but his band was a difficult listen, to say the least!
  2. I only have one cd by Hino, and it's "Live in Warsaw" (10/91). He plays the flugelhorn very nicely on that date. He has a lot of tricks in his bag, from long lines (think Baker, Farmer) to gutteral half-valve effects (a la Terry), and a strong, breathy tone. Yeah, I'd say he's a m.f..
  3. No, I too have been tuning in. I got to see the Bucks play the other night. Bogut looks to be for real. Redd and Ford, w/ Simmons...Magliore. Wow. I'm playing at the Blazers' VIP bash tonight. Paul Allen's band plays after us. The Jazz look better, too w/Okur stepping up. Now if AK47 can buy a basket
  4. OK, I re-checked mine, and it only contains one cd, "Love Dance". They even put it in a single cd case! What nerve!!
  5. ← This is listed as a "double CD", but on my copy there are both albums on one cd. Does anyone else have this as a 2cd set? Either way...
  6. It depends. What do you need?
  7. Rock the freakin' house!!!
  8. I just saw an advance copy of this (a promo) on half.com for $74.99. Here's your big chance. somebody!!!
  9. Yes, it's Matt. Thanks, guys...I wish I could drink a beer with ya'!
  10. Hey, Thanks! I've only been lurking here occasionally lately, mostly to read people b.s.in' about baseball. I've been listening to my collection more than ever, while trying not to buy too much music. Hence, the hiatus. I really appreciate the b-day wish.
  11. 2 words: Carmine Caruso. I'd check out his brass calisthenics book for sure. There isn't anything in the trumpet ed. world that has helped me as much with my tone and breathing. It has helped me to get my embouchure together, too...which for me was problematic for years. Good luck. Oh yeah, whisper tones are also of great benefit. Play 30 second long tones just a little louder than a whisper, beginning at G in the staff and down chromatically to low f#.
  12. I held out on buying a cd player until I was around 19. I had already developed a pretty healthy obsession with jazz and had a bunch of records. So, I broke down and decided to pick up a cd player one day, at a real divey pawn shop. Surprisingly (even today) they had a copy of Freddie Hubbard's "Breaking Point", used with a bunch of other crap. This was in '88 or '90. I guess that I also found a Rex Stewart cd at a pawn shop one time, which I thought was unusual. I always get intrigued when I'm at a Value Village-type thrift store and see an obscure jazz cd. Once I found Flora Purim's "Butterfly Dreams" (?) or something at a thrift store like that.
  13. Happy B-Day Peter!!! Hope that it was lots of fun.
  14. Buster Williams--Something More Chet Baker-You Can't Go Home Again
  15. I haven't been too in on this thread, as I don't give a rat's ass about either team...but the travelling thing really is out of control. Tonight I saw Rip grab a pass, run 2 steps before jumping some more to a halt position. How that isn't a travel is beyond me. It makes you appreciate it much more when someone actually doesn't walk. Which is becoming rare
  16. Lester Young: The Alladin Sessions disc 2
  17. I just got an email today after placing my order of 12 OJCs on 5/26. 4 were cancelled, 8 more will come soon, I hope.
  18. He'd probably go play somewhere else. And the Cavs would be done.
  19. I just bought 10 OJCs. -_-
  20. I was talking to the Dr. (Lonnie) a few months back, and he said that when he went in to the military (before being sent home for sassin' back ), he had already been playing for a long time. Mostly with his family. He said that he went in to the service in his late teens because all of his friends were getting into trouble.
  21. Yeah, I was actually very much using the term "REAL" as a construct to illustrate that it was being used in the "jive-ass" hierarchical sense. I don't think that anyone is qualified to make an empirical distinction of what is "real" playing vs. the contrary to anyone but themselves. I think that even if there were some aptitude-test that could parse out the geniuses from the non-geniuses in music...Stevie would be in the former (IMO), but that test would be discredited by someone, somewhere.
  22. There's a construct for ya'...REAL players. How does one make that list?
  23. What Wolff said!!!
