  1. I love his playing, but I have precious few of his recordings as a leader. Hoping someone out there has read it, and can offer a suggestion.???
  2. OK. Thanks, Claude. I thought I'd lost my shit!
  3. I was at a dinner party the other night, and these people had a cat named Mingus, and a dog named Monk. And all of a sudden, my jazz sensibilities were rattled by this guy saying that they appeared on a record together. He thought it was on a cut of "Night in Tunisia". I didn't want to chime in and say that it wasn't true (not being absolutely sure ), but I thought that he may have been thinking of the quintet recordings w/ Bud Powell. Anyway, w/o the obvious compilations, does anyone know if this ever happened? Or better yet, will those of you who certainly know help me clear this up? Am I missing something obvious, or was he ???
  4. Mr. Ties, I live in Portland and there are some suggestions that I'd like to make. The best restaurant in Portland that I'm aware of is called the Bombay Cricket Club. Mid-Eastern and some Mediterranean food there, and it rocks! It is on Hawthorne Blvd., which is in a district bearing the same name. It's rather eclectic and cool, IMHO. As far as jazz clubs go, there is a great piano trio that plays on Tuesdays at a place called the Bluemonk. They're called the Ramsey Embick trio. 3341 SE Belmont. I wish that you were coming in May, as I have an art exhibit hanging up there until the end of May. Hmmm....Besides that, I usually take my friends to strip clubs, not being too much of a culture-vulture. More here per capita than anywhere in the U.S., I am told. I can furnish more appropriate couples action at a later time, when I have more of it...if necessary. Hope you have a good time!

  6. The illusion of the guy getting a hummer is ruined for me by the fact that she's to far to the left.
  7. Oops. It's Effortless Mastery.
  8. Anyone out there ever read this? I think it has helped me elevate my playing as much as any lesson. I find the concept of not trying to sound good all of the time to be very apropos (sp.?). Try it sometime! Hell, it even works with singing!
  9. I chose the Blakey. Not a no-brainer at all, though. On some of the very early Morgan I sometimes think that his "fire" outweighed his variety w/r/t phrasing, ideas, etc.. This isn't to say that he's not my favorite trumpet player from that era. He ruled.
  10. Other alto playing sidemen on BN brings to mind Clarence Sharp, and Kenny Rodgers, who were on early Lee Morgan BN dates. Neither were particularly memorable, though, IMHO. Actually, the former's intonation was memorable
  11. Jaco Thad Bu Chet Mingus Lee Max Freddie God (though I doubt if people called A.Tatum this all that much) Kenny (though these days people might think of G.)
  12. Good to hear, AfricaBrass. Let me emphasize that you also pick up Either/Or, and XO. The Shit.
  13. Impossible--I actually didn't yet live in Portland when Elliott still did, but I know he has roots, many friends and family here. I think he lives in L.A., now. My older brother played a few shows w/ his opening band "Jr. High" in April '99. That tour came through Salt Lake City, where I lived at the time. My cat had a litter the day they played, and one of my friends suggested I name a kitten "Elliott", so I did. I even kept him! So how's that for hardcore?!!! . Anyway, to get back to your point, the scene here is pretty good, but not dripping w/ ES gigs. I wish he played here more often. And yes, there is a band called "Quasi" that I'd check out. They are a two-piece from Portland that used to be his bassist and drummer on tours, and they'd open for him. These guys share certain similarities w/ ES, IMHO. It's the drummer from Sleater-Kinney, and her ex-husband Sam Coomes, who plays a number of odd keyboards, guitars, etc.. His lyrics are depressing like Elliott's, but in a more humorous way, I would say. "Birds" is a good starter for their stuff. Enjoy! :rsmile:
  14. Good to hear that some jazz-flavored folks also like Elliott's music. Being in Portland, I've had a chance to see him a few times. He can play just about anything, and does on most of his albums. I can't wait for his new album. Heard it might be a double.
  15. Thanks, alankin. Nice painting, too. However,, after ruling out John Tesh, and Kenny G , I can't tell who it is. Couldn't be Elvin Jones... I dunno.
  16. It's actually Fats.
  17. OOPs, I meant "Terrorism" footage. That's what I was watching. I didn't even know of the BNBB at that point.
  18. Kudos to the Paradigm Titan bookshelf speaks. Under two-fitty, and worth twice as much. Where I shop, they'll even give you their full value towards a new (and more $) pair after 1 year.
  19. Thanks to everyone for looking, and all. I'll post more, later. In my recent ones they are all playing either a trumpet or a sax. I agree that it does require some patience to draw the musculature in the hand and embouchure. Catesta, I think you're right near ready!( I thought it was Django). J/K. Oh, and they always wore those friggin' suits..!....I think I spent at least 2 hours getting pinstripes drawn well on a Pres suit. If anyone has any ideas for additions to these, post them or send them! I'm thinking Monk, Bill Evans, Woody Shaw, Bird. Side note--I started my first one (Lee) on 9/11 while watching war footage.
  20. Thanks, guys. Rooster Ties---I haven't scanned the Joe yet. I hope to have an updated site soon, with the rest, incl. JOE. A preview--It's like "the Kicker" cover, w/o the swirly background.
  21. Hey Everybody...nice to be over here at the new forum w/ y'all. I wanted to post a link to a sample of jazz drawings that I've done over the last while. The link is: grapnel.net/moor . I'll be showing these and many more (Trane, Lester Young, Joe Henderson, to name some) at the Bluemonk in Portland in April and May. If you're in the area, come on by!
  22. I got mine about 2 weeks ago. Man, I had no idea that Carmell was such a m.f.. Jayhalk Talk didn't prepare me for what was to come. This has been getting some seoius play at my place. I'm going to re-listen to Nathan Davis' "The Hip Walk", which I highly recommend.

Check out "Cool, Calm and Collected" -I almost typed "Clam" there. 10/13/60. Quartet date w/ Billy Wallace , Bill Lee, and Vernel Fournier. He switched to piano, apparently...from dissatisfaction w/ his alto sound. Or so read the liner notes of this Koch cd. It might be found at Half. I don't work there.
