  1. damn. RIP
  2. thanks. I read they are heavy glossy covers, now, do the discs scratch easily when removing them from the jackets? trying to decide if I need to buy a bunch of double jewel cases for these, but at 22 discs, it may be easier just keeping them in the original packaging
  3. I'm going to pick up this box next friday, I'll be able to with coupons and discounts get it for $25 at Barnes&Noble. Is everything in mini LP sleeves in this box?
  4. I have quite a few of these discs in the series, because I had many of the recordings growing up on vinyl in the "Great Performances" series. Some of the performances like Beethoven's Eroica or Mahler's 2nd symphony are fantastic. Maybe the sound isn't the greatest and maybe versions by other conductors/orchestras may be better but I always really loved the passion in those Bernstein/NY Philharmonic recordings.
  5. man that was funky. Seriously, Marvin really cut all those tracks on a sofa?
  6. the Keystone Bop albums are some of my favorite 80's Hubbard. Great playing by Booby and JoHen on that, tho I think at that point at times Freddie would sort of resort to licks a lot when he'd stretch out on those tunes. I do get a kick out of tho, that that lip trill/shake lick shows up on "Ascension" that must be where it was first used.
  7. I like the clips I checked out of the new album saw the link to AAJ on the yahoo Metheny list. I am attracted by traditional Chinese sounds as well as Japanese
  8. I'll have to pull it out again, while say I've listened to more post bop, modal, inside outside and free things the past several years rather than hard bop, definitely one of my fav. blowing date type albums. Philly Joe is smokin on the title cut, the swing never flags, and of course Clark's hip ass opening phrase which owes as much to the vocabulary of Horace and Wynton Kelly in addition to his own.
  9. I don't really like pitch bend on synths either, whenever Herbie does it, it drives me nuts especially when he uses the synth emulation of the clavinet as he has for the past 20 years. I never understood the faces when your just bending a tone wheel, I like to make fun of that with my keyboard
  10. this video, I know many of us here are into great sound reproduction but this video made me laugh, really. This must be what Greg Maltz's setup is like. Me? I'm fine with my Grado SR 60's
  11. been a fan of Coryell since I saw him live, and he took time out by his own initiative to talk to me between sets. I will definitely be getting this
  12. retouched cover to come ? LOL! thankfully I had gotten an RVG of "Workout" with the fixed cover
  13. I find it odd Jim your dorm mates didn't get the duet performance. Was it b/c at that time both Sonny and McCoy had expanded beyond what they were in the 60's (McCoy) and the 50's and 60's? (Sonny)
  14. yeah, Woody was amazing. The way he nailed that was amazing for the most part
  15. Joe, how was the SF Jazz Collective? I've loved all 4 of their albums so far, and definitely will preorder the 2008 set soon. Sure beats what LCJO does, b/c its fresh and relevant
  16. thanks jmjk. Well these are mono so the stereo thing wouldn't be a factor.
  17. oh yeah, the terrible "Giants of Jazz: Immortal Concerts" CD. I had that, I now have the TOCJ 1500 series versions of volumes 1&2 on CD, how are the RVG's compared to those soundwise?
  18. WorldB3, those are gonna be my next purchases too
  19. thanks, I've noticed 3 versions of the same title. i.e. Bernstein Century, Masterworks, Great Performances
  20. Back when I was a kid, I had loads of these on vinyl, I had a lot of the Bernstein/NY Philharmonic ones, I love the version of the 1812 from 1957 which I see has been put out as a Sony Masterworks reissue, however, the Great Performances series I've seen some reissued with the original covers, not the beige/white bold black typeface covers, there are still many around on CD from the late 80's early 90's, are these ok sonically? I had gotten #12 which was a Bizet album on CD a long time ago. I haven't listened to classical for more than a decade, think I need to reconnect with my roots, grew up on a steady diet of a lot of classical and jazz but the jazz road has been the one for me for many years.
  21. looking forward to the new record
  22. just realized that today, JOS recorded "The Sermon" and all that material in what I feel is his greatest album, and one of the best sessions he participated in. Let's all go put it in!
  23. I won a copy on ebay last night for $35 (that includes shipping) I put in a max bid of $100 just for kicks, no one bid that high on it.
