  1. I will wait for the new reissue of Out to Lunch as I don't have any format version of this. When is the CD coming? I'd love to check out these new XRCD's but money is so tight and I have the RVG's, it's a shame some of them are compressed like that, but I thought as Kevin stated on the SH board once, that the EQ also affects the loudness on the RVG reissues?
  2. in no particular order I would put: Jan Garbarek: Dresden Christian McBride: Kind of Brown Tain: Watts ( "Return of The Jitney Man" was enough to sell me on this and it should be in the mailbox) Chick: Five Peace Band Live Return to Forever: Returns Keith Jarrett: Testament Monterey Quartet: Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival Jack DeJohnette/Danilo Perez/John Pattitucci: Music We Are Gary Burton: Quartet Live SF Jazz Collective: Live 2009
  3. Wouldn't Concord/Monterey Jazz Festival Records try to release this in their series?
  4. excellent article. Cool to read how they restored his bass. I think LaFaro reached a middle ground with the way Motian and Bill kept time, and that's what adds to the wonderful floating, it can seemingly go anywhere character the trio interplay has. Definitely Jarrett's trio is profoundly influenced by this, especially since Gary and Jack were members of Bill's trio at separate times.
  5. me too. I hope MC is still working for BN.

    Jim Rotondi

Jim's a nice guy. We had a great conversation a few years ago after a gig about Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
  7. gotta give more thumbs up to Phil Collins, and Chester Thompson, going through "Genesis: the Movie Box". I had been into some Genesis grow up, but all thanks goes to Jim for helping me really *listen* to these guys.
  8. I listened to that tune as I'm going thru "Genesis: The Movie Box", I definitely caught a lot of Genesis influences in the music though.
  9. I love this date, especially Haynes long solo on "Mooche" which leads Philly Joe to set off more choruses. Also everyone is comfortable with the bop dialect whereas the other dates were see what happens, tho IMO, I like them and they were mostly successful.
  10. cool beans!
  11. yeah, I think it was talked about in Downbeat once, he used it for composing. Another thing he mentioned once is he would to have loved to collaborate with Pat Metheny.
  12. he owned a Synclavier
  13. Exactly, wonderful stuff!
  14. thx. More like impressions, Noj.
  15. Well, Jim sent out all the preorders and "In Memorandom" may be the most personal music Jim has yet created. It's all synths, which may be a red flag for some here, some prepared piano and drum machines, but what's remarkable about the record is the gamut of influences it possesses. Jim has influences on the record from Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Genesis, Brian Eno, Pharoah Sanders, Coltrane, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, video game music but filters it through his own lens of musical experience. The dynamic range on the disc soundwise is incredible, it's a headphone record, with tons of lush, mostly improvised synth textures, and upper voicings, found on pieces like "Psyche". The relative quiet of "Silo" is startingly, brilliantly offset by the gated percussive thwack of "Oddball". Overall, its very good music and while copies remain, check it out.
  16. when did this receive a domestic CD release?
  17. thanks Lon. Removed from my Amazon list.
  18. I saw a 3 CD set on Amazon of the Newport in NY '72 album with everything minus the Soul Sessions. I had one of the "Best Of's" on vinyl and wonder if this 3 disc set is transferred from the master tapes (if they exist?) or vinyl. Some of the performances are sloppy, but theres a lot of fun soloing going on too.
  19. Tranemonk, I was listening to the SFJazz Collective '08 album a few days ago, I hadn't yet hit disc 3. It's great stuff, especially Lovano's "Infant Eyes" rework, "Go" "The Year 2008", "Secrets of the Code". The band has been one of my favs. since I bought the 2 Nonesuch highlight discs, then I ordered (then) 5 complete sets. I will be getting Live 2009 for Christmas. Personally the Hancock album is my favorite.
  20. send that to my friend, maybe her parents know what it is
  21. We have the volcanic interpretations avec James Smith and his Trio
  22. George Duke's "Muir Woods Suite" is nice with the blending of classical, and jazz elements.
