What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

1954 -
like l. armstrong, hawkins carried a record player with him on all his travels, but unlike armstrong who listened only to his own recordings, hawkins prefered opera.
-
in the hawkins biography from 10-15 years ago, it said that he listened to opera recordings a lot. anyone remember if any particular operas were mentioned? it must have been this bio The song of the Hawk: the life and recordings of Coleman Hawkins. by Chilton, John, Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, 1990.

Coltrane "The Outer World" aka "the bethlehem years" 2cd set from 2001
l p replied to l p's topic in Discography
yes, The Bethlehem Years: John Coltrane (Bethlehem 20-50012) 1994 is the one that i have now. disc 1 of the 2001 issue is the big band material. https://musicbrainz.org/release/8164f9c9-6e14-4f0d-b7d1-ccde0a324477 disc 2 of the 2001 issue is only 55minutes long, so they didn't omit the master takes because of time constraints. -

it looks like the same problem with c-6. The Kiss of No Return e-9. The Outer World f-3. El Toro Valiente -
cd2 of this set contains 1 Tippin' (take 1) 6:27 2 Tippin' (take 2) (breakdown) 1:21 3 Tippin' (take 3) 6:10 4 Tippin' (take 4) (breakdown) 0:43 5 Tippin' (take 5) 0:46 6 Tippin' (take 6) 6:20 7 Tippin' (take 7) (false start) 0:30 8 Pristine (take 1) (false start) 0:20 9 Pristine (take 2) 7:19 10 Pristine (take 3) (false start) 0:47 11 Pristine (take 4) (beakdown) 1:13 12 Pristine (take 5) (breakdown) 0:46 13 Pristine (take 6) 8:22 14 Pristine (take 7) 6:10 15 Pristine (take 8) 6:17 it looks like Tippin' take 8, and Pristine take 9 are not on this set. is it because they are composites of other takes? normally, if they were composites, they'd be listed as h-m. and i-m. instead of h-9. and i-8.

1976 is the year when a lot of rock bands that were producing decent music (for rock) began to lose their way. and many jazz musicians started to put out records that sound a lot like smooth jazz.
-
i may be thinking of an isolated coltrane story in one of the biographies, probably the porter one.

wasn't there a sax player who liked to play barefoot on stage?
