  1. +1 Bassist David Parlato should also be more widely available on record. I had the pleasure of playing and recording with him over several years here in NM. He recently retired from playing (he's taken up painting as his creative outlet) but is still doing some teaching. Great idea for a set, legal wrangling aside!
  2. Zappa expressed thoughts similar to yours on "Make a Jazz Noise Here", although his were more succinct. David appears to be disgruntled. Why is it we use the word "disgruntled" but we never hear about anybody being "gruntled"?
  3. I love those drum fills that Mel Lewis used to do; sounded like he was just dumping out his stick bag all over the drumset!
  4. Mexican Coke is AWESOME!!! They have it at some Mexican restaurants here in NM, and they sell it by the case at Costco.
  5. Yes, Miles Ahead from 1957. Also played flugel on The Brass Ensembles Of The Jazz And Classical Music Society - Music For Brass (Columbia CL 941, PC 37012) in 1956. "Musings" is from '55, but jazzdisco lists that date on trumpet only.
  6. My condolences. Hang in there!
  7. Yes. I don't think I've ever listened to this one in headphones. But I'm sure it only adds to the distracting sound!
  8. Having a glass of this: It's fascinating, the wide array of images that come up when you google "Jameson"
  9. Caught most of this tonite (came in late, coming from a rehearsal) and it was very cool. George had an interesting electronic rig. He used it to record, process and playback stuff that he was doing on trombone. He also had a mic in front of Nicole and was recording and processing some of the things she played. They'll play again Tuesday night at UNM, and we'll do a couple of Nicole's big band things as well. (Edit to say that, after speaking with George, I learned that he was not playing back things that were just played. Instead he was playing all kinds of pre-recorded stuff, including some snippets of Nicole Mitchell from years ago!)
  10. As FreeForAll pointed out in another thread, Moody is the "Best Smelling Man in Jazz"! Happy Birthday!!!!
  11. Funny how those things make the rounds. Those just showed up in my email this morning! I have no doubt about the stupid questions being asked by the attorneys, but some of the wise-ass answers seem a little too good to be true. More like the product of l'esprit d'escalier. Still damn funny, though.
  12. There was an interview with Rollins and he was asked about his penchant for playing quotes in his solos. His response was to say that (the Easter example above notwithstanding) they usually aren't self-conscious or premeditated things. He's just improvising a line, discovers that he just played the first few notes of another tune, and then just decides to finish that melodic idea. I love the tune "Laura" and how the melody fits over the very common ii-V-I chord sequence. Since my first wife's name is Laura I used to quote it quite a bit (to an annoying excess, as FreeForAll will no doubt attest to). I kind of swore off it several years ago.
  13. I was stunned to see this story on my Yahoo! front page this morning. Beyond the sadness of the story, it will be interesting to see what the final diagnosis of the problem is. R.I.P.
  14. AKA "Nude Indigo". I saw the movie on opening day, and enjoyed it. I had never read the graphic novel, so I had the "advantage" of no expectations.
  15. Happy Birthday, Rooster!!!
  16. Now this kinda tripped me out: http://www.musicminusone.com/CompanyInfo/Licensing.asp etc.... Oh well...
  17. Woo-Hoo!!! Congratulations! Nice photo, too!
  18. Looks like some of the Lincoln Hotel stuff is available on CD on the Circle label (the first few listed here): Amazon I have a vinyl version of one of the Circle releases called "More 1944" that has some of it.
  19. A (more than) slight thread derailment. This one's for FreeForAll: Arlene Francis plays trombone on "I've Got A Secret"
  20. Yeah, he nailed it on James Brown, but his guess during Stevie Wonder's visit was "Bobby Vinton"!!
  21. My wife has a gift for being able to "reverse engineer" various dishes. We'll have something at a restaurant that we really dig, and she'll be able to recreate it, often to a ridiculous degree of accuracy. She did it again last night. A soup that we had at a Mexican place a while back; Chicken with a bunch of different veggies, tortilla chips "melted" in, some cilantro and a dollop of guacamole. Uncanny!!! Had leftovers tonight and it tasted even better.
  22. Woo-Hoo! Seems the UPS guys all worked extra hard (in honor of FreeForAll's birthday, no doubt) to get my set delivered a day early. Listening to it right now. I ripped the discs onto my laptop, and when iTunes accessed the CDDB to get info for Disc 5, one of the tune titles came up as, "I'm A Fool To Want Me."
  23. Happy Birthday, Paulie!!!! Hope it's a great one. I'm guessing, maybe checking out your new Getz "Dynasty" side and sipping on some good Tequila?
