Thanks for the input

Has anyone ordered from Fresh Sound before? There are a couple of titles I'd like to grab if they're reliable.
-
I really dug a couple from last year's batch - Moon Rappin and the Worm. The Pattons are an absolute must. I think Kofi and Electric Byrd are excellent as well. Two Headed Freap is excellent as well.
-
It also underscores how lucky we are to have folks like Cuscuna, Blue Note, Mosaic Records, Chuck and others who care about jazz keep the music alive.
-
That speaks volumes to the current state of both jazz reissues and new releases.
-
Speak for yourself Tod. I can quit anytime I want, for as long as I want. I simply choose to continue buying.

I'm really glad to see all of the positive remarks about this group of releases. I've mentioned on this thread and elsewhere that these are my favorite Conns - for many of the same reasons cited above - the unique sounds, first exposures to these artists etc. BN really did a great job with these.

After hearing Nat Adderley's Soul of the Bible I'd like to see Soul Zodiac be reissued on CD. Perhaps it would make a nice Rare Groove.
-
Well, it's been what - about 2 months since the BNBB shut down? Hasn't affected my Blue Note purchases a bit. I've picked up the 4 Rare Grooves, plus a bunch of French Groove Experience releases, the new Truffaz, Soulive. I've got all but the Chet Baker and Crew disc on preorder from the May 20th set of new releases and reissues (CDs, not SACDs). I'm looking forward to the June bunch as well. My Mosaic purchases have slowed a bit, but it's only because of cash flow issues and the fact that I've been buying the BN stuff.
-
Looks like I'm getting a copy thanks to Chuck. Anyone got one for Mark (sheldonm)?
-
I was going to post something similar but then remembered what my mother taught me - "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all" But since already said I'll just pile on. The first thought that popped in my head when I looked at 'em is that I'd rather pay the money to pick up Live at the Hickory House Vol 1 and 2.
-
You're right about REALLY having to work to block things out. But the reward is worth it. Is Soul Zodiac is the better of these two projects, I have to get my hands on that one. I hope US BN takes a queue from their French counterparts and puts this out.

That's what I sometimes use the Mizell brothers Rare Grooves for - seriously
-
I could not care less about the Dixie Chicks, what they said or what they are now doing. They always have and always will irritate me.
-
I went with Slice of the Top, but I hated picking just one out of this bunch.
-
Great News indeed. Thanks for confirming that the LP set will be available.
-
What's up with that?

BN owns the Green date, the Mecca date, the Hipp and the two Best of the West lps. No Parlan 10" material, but previous issues include the 2 Hopes, and the Moody/Blakey material. Thanks Chuck. I'd definitely like to check out some of that stuff. As for Parlan, I meant to say Horace Silver. Didn't the early Silver led Jazz Msssengers have some 10 inch material? Or is that the Blakey stuff you're referring to? Or am I just totally confused?

Well, I just looked ahead. June's going to be busy too: Greg Osby - St. Louis Shoes Emmanuel Pahud/Jacky Terrasson - Into the Blue Chucho Valdes - New Conceptions Chet Baker - The Most Important Jazz Album Count Basie - Chairman of the Board Billy Eckstine - Once More With Feeling Jimmy Rushing - Five Feet of Soul Dinah Washington - Dinah '62 I'm going to wait on the Miles at the Blackhawk until Mosaic determines if they're going to do an LP set.
-
I don't like to look too far ahead. I just preordered most of the upcoming BN stuff (I already have the Chet Baker): Cannonball Adderley - Fiddler on the Roof Stan Kenton - Contemporary Concepts - I've really bcome a big Kenton fan over the years. Peggy Lee/George Shearing Quintet - Beauty and the Beat - ditto for both Lee and Shearing George Shearing Quintet with Dakota Staton/ - In The Night - First exposure to Staton Paul Jackson, Jr. - Still Small Voice - probably a little too smooth for most, but his last one has a nice groove. Good for late night listening, parties etc. Martial Solal - NY1 - never heard him before and am taking a chance. The Bennie Green and Randy Weston Mosaic Selects Also, I just bagged the new Truffaz. It's on the way.

I'd love to see all of the 10" material they have left be released as well. I know some of the earliest 10" material was not Blue Note owned, but was licensed fro someone. I'm not sure if the Urbie Green was BN or not. One BN 10" that I picked up from Japan is the Lou Mecca. It's very nice. A lot of the BN owned 10" material has already hit the market as well as parts of later release. Didn't Horace Parlan, Elmo Hope, James Moody and perhaps Jutta Hipp have 10" material that is already out on disc? Of course I could be all wet. Isn't there some "lost" material by John Collins as well?
-
I'd love to hear some Dexter interviews as well. I enjoy listening to the pieces they have on the Dexter set.
-
I echo AB's comments. The BN 10" Conn series was an eye (ear) opener for me. Fabulous music in all the releases, but I also picked the Melle as my favorite. Very quirky/50s vibe to the proceedings that I really dig. But there's not a bad one on the bunch. This series was my first exposure to the 50s jazz scene and really helped me start branching out into different styles and periods. The West Coast Classics AB mentioned above are favorites as well (another poll in the offing? )
-
I don't think the Melle was in any of the other polls. It was the first of that mini series that I picked up. I loved it. Grabbed the rest shortly thereafter.
