  1. I don't find Piston's music all that engaging or interesting. A bit too conservative and pleasant sounding. Hindemith, on the other hand, wrote a lot of brilliant music that keeps me listening.
  2. From the Boulez Complete Erato box. First listen to Franco Donatoni (1927-2000). Tema, and Cadeau are instrumental works for chamber ensembles of 11 & 12 instruments. Sounds atonal, but fairly colorful music for strings, brass, winds and percussion. May appeal to fans of Carter and Boulez.
  3. I stumbled onto the Coker CD at a local store, and decided to buy it. After the first spin, I'm not too enthused. It's an ok session, but nothing outstanding.
  4. A very diverse and interesting collection of music in this Boulez/Erato set. And I only paid 23 dollars + shp for 14 CDs.
  5. Disc one: Stravinsky Pulcinella, etc Content info here: http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=1735523
  6. An EMI France release. They spell the composer's name with an o instead of the more common u.
  7. I like the Howells Hymnus Paradisi. I may pick up the Hickox recording on Chandos, which is one of their budget priced re-issues.
  8. I don't find the Finzi work stodgy at all. So far it's the most impressive piece I've listened to in this 5 disc set. I also enjoyed Holst's Egdon Heath. But you're probably better off with a modern recording. This set is mastered too loud, and there are some rather harsh sounding passages, which kind of ruins the beautiful choral singing. The same is true for the Adrian Boult Complete RVW set I have.
  9. Re: Finzi Intimations of Immortality I'm enjoying this quite a bit. I think the music is beautiful!
  10. This site's search engine has always been crap. You have to google the subject and add "organissimo".
  11. Unfortunately, I don't live in a city where I can hear cutting edge music like Boulez. I wish I was closer to Cleveland,Chicago, or NYC. But I'm stuck in Syracuse. We do get some good chamber music concerts.
  12. A moving tribute from Cleveland Orchestra members.
