Fred Frith, Henry Cow and other Canterbury sorta bands
StarThrower replied to 7/4's topic in Artists
Getting back into some of this stuff after a few years away. Ordered Fred Frith's Gravity, Speechless, and Cosa Brava-Ragged Atlas. Also picked up the first two albums by the French band Moving Gelatin Plates. And finally got Henry Cow's Legend after owning the others for several years. I may get those Matching Mole 2 CD re-issues as well. Great set her by Cosa Brava. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohfrJTHC4m4 -
It's a good set. I've owned a copy for several years.

I don't think he likes pianos. He always got a lousy piano sound on all of those 50s and 60s albums. But the drums and horns sound great. I was listening to Etcetera recently and thinking wow, Herbie Hancock is playing all of this amazing stuff while accompanying Wayne, but all you can hear is Shorter and Joe Chambers. You have to listen past Wayne and Joe to hear Herbie and Cecil McBee.

Pre-1983* is great. Close to the Edge is a great place to start. *Trevor Rabin replaced Steve Howe in the band that year, it's all downhill after Drama (1980). I would say start chronologically with The Yes Album, then Fragile and Close to the Edge. Their 3 best, IMO. Be sure to get the version of Fragile with the America bonus track. It's a great 10 minute Yes treatment of the Paul Simon tune. It's also available on Yesterdays. A compilation of tracks from their first two albums.

Digging Contrasts and Celebration lately. Others I have are: Fuchsia Swing Song Contours Dimensions and Inventions Streams Waves Crystals Crosscurrent Violet Violets Reunion-Live In New York Any other great ones I'm missing?
-
Bummer. Yes Fragile made a huge impression on me as a 14 year old. It's still a great sounding record. Evergreen in my opinion.

Haven't listened to Red Clay in ages. I don't mind electric piano. I've listened to Mark Murphy's version more than Hubbard's. The 32 Jazz transfers sound like crap. Somebody should reissue Mark's Muse catalog with updated sound. Similiar to Page One, I didn't like Dorham's Una Mas much either, but it's growing on me. I still think In n Out is their best stuff. Kenny and Joe that is.
-
I never really got into Page One. Bought it after I had been listening to Inner Urge, and In n Out. I finally ordered Our Thing after years of procrastination. I'm really looking forward to it, as I'm on a Kenny Dorham kick at the moment.

Jagger's full of shit. He sucked up and he won't admit it.

More Joe Henderson is always good. Inner Urge is a must. I still need to pick up Our Thing. I've been meaning to get around to it for about 30 years now. I love Joe and Kenny Dorham together, but Una Mas always sounds a bit uninspired whenever I put it on.

Damn, that sucks! I'm a big fan. His recent album Too Much Jesus (Not Enough Whiskey) is a great soul/funk/blues record.

I bought Lovano's first five Blue Note albums as they appeared in the early to mid 90s. I got the most mileage out of the first three, and also the three with Scofield. Universal Language is probably my favorite of his. I think it's his most interesting record. I like the two bass concept, and DeJohnette sounds great on this one. 1991's From The Soul is a fine effort as well. It's good that he had the opportunity to make a record with Ed Blackwell and Michel Petrucciani while they were around. But after '95 I stopped buying his records.

Was Keith ever offered a knighthood? Can't even imagine that. It would be funny if he did get considered and dissed the queen. He did voice his opinions on the subject in interviews.
-
Never liked his singing. Sounds like he's got two tongues in his mouth. But I do dig some of the music. As for the knighthood, it just doesn't seem right for rock n rollers. I'm with Keith Richards on this one.

Perhaps you should listen to The Fantastic Frank Strozier on Vee Jay? It's pretty fantastic!
-
Hell, I've already got most of those. I'll be picking up Bitter Sweet. And I'll pass on the Tom Scott.

I went back to the store and bought the Connoisseur Edition. I gave it a listen down there on headphones and it sounded good. Also picked up Bass On Top for 5 bucks.
-
I can get the used Connoisseur Edition for 6 bucks, or the RVG for 8. I'm just wary about RVGs as many I've bought sound kinda fuzzy with boomy bass. The Connoisseurs sound a bit crisper and leaner. But I do like beefy bass as long as it's not going boom boom.
