If anyone cares to chime in, I have a question pertaining to the Paul Chambers Quintet CD. I want to pick up a copy and I have three options. My local CD store has both the RVG and Connoisseur editions, or I can get the Japanese CD released on July 1st, but it's just a low priced edition, not a SHM. Anyone know the difference, or hear the difference? Thanks! They're all around the same price.

Has anyone done business with the CdJapan web-store?
StarThrower replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I love CD Japan! Every order is well packaged, and I've never had one damaged jewel case. I can't say that about anybody else except for Wayside Music. All those folks getting ripped off at Amazon will be sore if they ever visit CD Japan and find so many classic jazz titles for under 9 dollars. -
This strangely titled box set.

Suggest Modern or Modernist Orchestral Music
StarThrower replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Classical Discussion
The "reasons why" could make for a very long discussion. And I'm not sure I know exactly why, or if I could verbalize why I'm stirred by a particular piece of music? But I'll give a few examples. When it comes to particular forms such as concertos, I could never get interested in the older music. For example, most romantic concertos feature dazzling virtuosity, but this bores me to tears. I find the modern rhythms and harmonies of 20th century concertos to be more engaging and interesting. So the violin concertos of Ligeti, Schoenberg, or Gubaidulina are much more engaging for my ears and brain than say, Beethoven's monumental work. And I mentioned the Ligeti box particularly for the concertos, as I feel like he wrote a bunch of great and original sounding pieces for that form. For me, his violin concerto is one of the most beautiful pieces I've heard. The piano concerto is not as easy on the ears, but just listening to the complexity and ideas in this work, and admiring the ability of the musicians to perform this incredibly challenging composition is inspiring for me as a listener. Some other modern composers I'm still working on and trying to enjoy such as Per Norgard. And I guess he would be considered contemporary, as he is still with us. His music is quite colorful, and sounds highly original to my ears, but it doesn't always move me as a listener. At this point. the piece I enjoy the most is Terrains Vague from the Chandos CD paired with his 6th symphony. It's an exciting and vigorous piece with some ominous sounding bass trombones. OK, I won't bore you with any more... -

Almost bought that Erato box last December, but I had too many other things in my cart. If you can hold off until the end of the year, Presto Classical has a huge box set sale when you can pick it up very cheap. But 25 dollars from amazon vendors is very reasonable as well. I'm not really a big enough Milhaud fan to want 10 CDs.

Pierre Dorge & New Jungle Orchestra - Giraf , fantastic album w/ great compositions, players, and a wonderful sense of humor. China Jungle, and Danish Jungle are great as well. Vienna Art Orchestra- Notion In Perpetual Motion on hatOLOGY. Of the three CDs I have, this one has the best material. And as usual, Hat Hut recordings are phenomenal. Duke Ellington-The Great Paris Concert 2 CD set on Collectables label John Hollenbeck-Eternal Interlude Joe Henderson Big Band on Verve, Great recording of Joe's excellent compositions. Frank Zappa - Make A Jazz Noise Here, 12 piece band recorded on '88 tour w/ five man horn section. Ed Palermo Big Band - Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance, Ed's band is phenomenal, and he wrote some great arrangements for these Zappa compositions. McCoy Tyner - 13th House, big band album from his Milestone years. Michel Camilo - One More Once , High energy Latin big band playing Camilio's best known compositions. Lots of catchy melodies, and the band is killing. Muhal Richard Abrams - The Hearinga Suite, Colorful, exhilarating big band charts.

Anybody pick up Blakey's Freedom Rider? I've heard the 1998 CD sounded pretty bad.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

The Ed Blackwell box is actually 9 dollars cheaper from Amazon vendors. -

That Cyrille set is spectacular. The Ed Blackwell is also really good. And the Richard Abrams set is terrific as well, so you should be very happy. I like the Air albums the most in the Threadgill box. The live set from Montreal sounds really great. I spent 100 dollars and got the Blackwell and Lacy Vol 2 sets from Grooves, Inc a couple months back. I'm pretty happy with both of them. The only Lacy album I 'm not crazy about is the 2 CD The Cry, Otherwise it's a great set. -
But one of the big problems with these Real Gone titles is that they look respectable and legit. A jazz consumer who's not in the know (who, say, doesn't read this BB) could reason that Amazon is selling these, I see them in Half Price Books and other stores, so they're probably OK (similar to those Doxy LPs). Someone who does BitTorrent knows exactly what he's doing and why it's wrong. A good comparison would be those Applause LPs from the '80's that reissued some Blue Note titles. They were cheap and they looked like boots, so the average consumer wouldn't know they were actually licensed from BN. They were in record stores, so the average consumer figured they're probably legit. In the case of Applause, they'd be correct; in the case of Real Gone or Doxy, not so. To the average consumer, I'll bet these look a lot alike: The "average consumer" doesn't buy jazz records. Jazz fans know the difference, unless they're extremely naive or clueless. I prefer to buy the legit CDs for better sound (not always the case) and the photos and liner notes are nice, but I'm over 50 and I can't read the tiny print. In the age of dollar store economics, people have become conditioned to getting stuff on the cheap, so why not get 8 albums for 8 bucks?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!...KEITH JARRETT...70!!!!!
StarThrower replied to bluenote65's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I heard the Bartok concerto on the radio yesterday. The sound is not good. Piano sounds kinda murky. -
My local brick & mortar store has loads of legit classic jazz titles for 5.99, so I buy them there. I did buy one title on the Avid label. The Clark Terry 4 Classic Albums because I wanted the unavailable One Foot In The Gutter album. This label claims that their CDs are remastered for superior sound, but I think it's bullshit. These albums don't sound very good.

Many of those Sony titles are even cheaper at Importcds. I got a bunch of great Ellington titles for 3.99. That Duke and Rosemary Clooney album is great, but I went with a box set for more material.
