I thought Jones played well enough with Mingus (though his albums as a leader do nothing for me). Faddis isn't a big turnoff for me though he certainly isn't a plus.. Glad to have another Mingus group documented, especially with the mysterious Foster.

Correct unless you want to count the live date "The Scorpion", recorded late 1970, but not released until 1995. I basically fall where you do on all of this.

$118 on amazon, $73 on importcds. Still only tempted, not that hot on their albums later than the original group (many of the originals then went off and joined Soft Machine). Probably more tempted by the Barbara Thompson, just because I don't have anything by her, as I have the run of 70's and early 80's Nucleus albums

My understanding was that Shaw replaced Cook as co-leader with Hayes, and McLean replaced Cook in the lineup.

Price dependent for me. About 4+ prime CD's for me, the rest is increasingly marginal. $150? No way. $80? Maybe.

I remember reading a quote by Shaw, I think on the liner notes to one of his Columbia albums, where he threw shade on the Louis Hayes/Ronnie Mathews/Stafford James/Rene McLean group he had left as not being good enough musicians for him. Thought that was pretty arrogant.
