    McCoy Tyner

+1 That may just be a difference in taste. The late 60's-early 70's BN's and the early-mid 70's Milestones were just utterly explosive and tremendous to my ears, masterpieces.

It's good, but always has seemed likea relative disappointment, which holds true for both so many BN albums from that relaunch period and so many post-Milestone Tyner albums. Seemed like the craft remained, but the inspiration was gone.
  3. Merry Christmas, Mark! Good subject for much further research then. Start here!
  4. Have a blessed Christmas! We have our three year old grandson living with us, so you can imagine what the morning has been like so far . Naps all around this afternoon. Last night was Christmas eve service at church followed by dinner with friends and family at our house.
  5. Which set is that?
  6. Can't imagine anyone, when they're in the mood for some Jimmy Smith, choosing to play this one out of the dozens of albums he recorded. Just fills a slot on the BN shelf,
  7. Not aware of specific plans, but profiteering being what it is, how could they not do one?
  8. Any word on dvd release? They missed christmas market.
  9. I doubt if BN owns any rights to the Town Hall material, as it was to be leased, was rejected, and some of it released on ESP-Disk a couple of years later.
  10. I like the cover picture, but not $230 worth. Have every minute of the music on it already, and even if I didn't, could certainly find it at less than $38/album. I'm totally with Chuck on this.
  11. Hendrix has quite a resume. I first noticed him on Billy Harper dates on youtube. He has also played in Charles Tolliver's big band and a host of other credits. Sounds good to me when I hear him, though I've never sought him out. Williams has been around for 25-30 years, and I see him pop up in credits from time to time, but he's never caught my ear, good or bad. Both have a lot of academic credentials (as do so many jazz musicians these days).
  12. What's the story ?!?
  13. He is not. Indeed, when I think of the music/musicians I included on this BFT for shock purposes, Billy Higgins is certainly not who I thought would set someone off!
  14. Record companies used to be willing, at times, to nurture artists along. "The Joker", "Fly Like an Eagle", and "Book of Dreams" were Steve Miller's 8th, 9th, and 10th albums. Albums 6 and 7 ("Rock Love" and "Recall the Beginning") had sold nothing, but Capitol stayed with him. "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" were Fleetwood Mac's 11th and 12th albums. They had not sold anything in England since their first couple of albums, and had never sold in the USA, but Warner Bros. stayed with them.
  15. I wouldn't mind getting the Quebec/Hardee CD and the Jimmy Smith CD set if they were at good prices, but I don't want to go all crazy for them. In general, I have gone the opposite direction, selling off Mosaic boxes as I am able to replace them with other CD issues. Next up to sell is the Stanley Turrentine, and I'd move the Gerald Wilson and the Sonny Stitt for fair prices. I like the Select's better, but have even sold off a fair number of them.
  16. They did some really strange artwork at CTI. Good music, though...
  17. Understood, though I like some of his Atlantic work quite a bit, but the albums certainly were inconsistent. The Columbia albums were really good. The work with Chico Hamilton was my favorite Lloyd ( and my favorite Gabor Szabo).
  18. Sorry to hear that, I remember "Olinga" being my favorite thing on there (though it's been 30+ years since I heard the album).
  19. Direct-to-disc recording refers to sound recording methods that bypass the use of magnetic tape recording and record audio directly onto analog disc masters. So no opportunity for mixing...
  20. Better and more substantial than you think it is. Much more fire than the studio albums from that period. It was all downhill from here for him.
