  1. I know nothing about this! Can you tell us more? How old is he there, in his teens?
  2. Off the top of my head (will add others later, I'm sure): Billy Harper - Destiny is Yours Woody Shaw - Lotus Flower Pharoah Sanders - Africa Mingus Dynasty - Live at Montreux
  3. +1. And "Crystal Silence" and "Light as a Feather" each broke incredible ground, and are also classics. And he did dozens of worthwhile to excellent albums in the decades since. Incredible musician, and probably taken for granted way too much. RIP. Ouch.
  4. My Porter box showed up today, six days after I placed the order. No shipping notice from them, but Very mixed bag, but overall I am quite happy at $40, and am glad to support their work. My package had 32 CD's. General breakdown is this: Various non-jazz titles (of limited or no interest to me, I'll only even place maybe 2 in my CD player): 16 titles (including 3 duplicates). Rap, rock, electronic, classicalish, you name it. Obscurish 21st century jazz titles (will give them a listen, but not expecting much given my tastes): 2 titles Obscurish jazz titles from the 70's (these are actually of great interest to me): 6 titles - loving "Thing" bu Arnold Cheatham right now. That would be a $10 CD to me by itself, and I had never heard of it. Jazz titles by guys I've heard of: 8 titles - 3 by Odean Pope, 1 each by Elliot Levin, Warren Smith, Nate Wooley, Ted Daniel, Dunmall/Grimes/Cyrille trio. The Pope's, Smith, and Daniel are prime for me, though I already own the Daniel. So 14 titles that are prime for me, 2 that are not, and 16 totally lost on me. For $40, and to a good cause, works for me. Wonder if we could set up a trading site for those of us who buy these? Would also love to know how different each batch is, to know if it would make sense to get another one.
  5. Love Carroll's work - very underrecognized guy in my eyes.
  6. I'm a big John Hicks fan in general. Actually have more leader dates by him than I do by Murray. I used to work with a woman who went to Sumner High School in St. Louis with Hicks, Lester Bowie, and Tina Turner in the 50's. That was some talented school.
  7. Certainly my favorite of the Murray albums done with a standard p/b/d quartet that I've heard (plenty I haven't heard). I also really like "Shakill's Warrior" and some of the octet recordings.

  9. Nice to see the feature of Joe Negri, who went on to a major role in Mister Rogers!
  10. I like her "Passion Dance" (the Tyner composition) album on Telarc a lot. Never heard the one noted here. She's a really good singer.
  11. George Burns Milton Berle Jack Benny
  12. Ruben Amaro Tony Taylor Cookie Rojas
  13. Doing some more shopping, I can get 200 of them (smallest quantity they offer) for $36 ($26 + $10 shipping) from a place called discmakers.com. I've actually never shopped at bags unlimited before, so did not think of them. I have an offer out on ebay for 100, will go with discmakers.com if that does not pan out. Thanks for the help!
  14. Looking for most economical route to get 100 white jewel case replacement trays (with or without the rest of the jewel cases). Want them for my vintage Blue Note CD's. Any leads greatly appreciated. I have looked on Ebay and Amazon, so know what is out there. Best price is currently $34 for 100 of the replacement trays (which seems high), so that is what I am looking to beat, thanks.
  15. You might also check out Brian Auger. And the work that Mike Ratledge did with Soft Machine (especially on their third and fourth albums).
  16. Thanks for the lead! For the Porter Records CD deal , I just went to their website http://www.porterrecords.com/ and it was right on the home page. I ordered, and will report back on if/when I receive it. If nothing else, helps repay them for their past good work.
  17. I LOVE Gene Pitney! Own this (3 CD's, 75 cuts). BTW, that documentary on the Wrecking Crew from a few years ago (excellent, and the hours and hours of extras hold up) did a nice job of showing they had lives apart from the records they made. Though I do lose track of considering that. BTW, Hal Blaine's drumming on "Last Chance To Turn Around" is something I have asked people to listen to.

The pre-Philles cuts on it, apart from some of the hits on the box set, are strictly "historical interest" as opposed to "good".
  19. Much of the 50's-early 60's stuff sounded like it was beamed in from another planet (complete with interstellar distortion).
