  1. Maybe they'll start doing (no pun intended) those porn soundtracks so beloved by tha bastards...
  2. "more about writing than music" I think that says it all about WB and the NY'er in general, which has most certainly never been for "the masses", just the middling bunch... So, yes, he had a wonderful way with words but, at least as often as not, they didn't really even make sense. viz., if Lester Young's tone was "wheaty", what was Ben Webster, oatmeal? That said, he did perfectly capture the ways in which jazz was appreciated by those well educated souls who loved it but who stood outside it, like most of us here...which might well account for the vociforusness(sp?) of this little pissing match.
  3. For me it's a matter of context, when he goes solo unexpectedly at the end of a song it's exciting, this isn't...
  4. Have, like, and will post more when I've had a chance to listen more! Talked to a record store owner I know tonight who said there's a chance Sonny will play Portland next winter. I sure hope so, haven't seen him in about 15yr.
  5. JazzKat is the youngest regular contributor, no?
  6. Thank you both for reminding me of those worthy efforts...
  7. Basically this whole issue is keyboard-centric (dare I say 'pianist-centric'?) If you play a guitar, fiddle or any brass or woodwind, perfect fifths, thirds, whatever are available whenever you want them (provided your ear is good enuff). You can put the comas wherever you want, including right in the middle of a nicely bent note!
  8. Nice thread, but since a saxophone, any saxophone, is basically a bitch, what's that make the babes playin' 'em?
  9. And the Hollywood Allstars Sessions has some wonderful stuffs, esp'ly the 2nd session w/Stitt and the one w/Lee Konitz.
  10. Lovely performance, but am I the only one who finds the sound a little wacky?
  11. Might've been 3LPs worth of Sun Records on Charly, or I may be forgettin' something! (good BN title)
  12. For those not familar with it, this is one ofthe more outstanding 'with strings' dates extant...
  13. Rooster- Shouldn't that be Miles - the Jack Johnson months?
  14. One last try to stir up some discussion here, I think that GG and Idris beat the JBs at their own game on "Ain't It Funky Now" and the MarKeys come damn close on their "Dear James Medley" (the album lists the right tunes but in the wrong order). What say you? (object verb subject, where did that structure come from?) One last catagory, not strictly covers, but might as well be- "Mama Too Tight" by Archie Shepp "Soul Theme" by King Curtis "Rock & Soul Music" by Fishy Joe & the Cunts these are truly sincere tributes to JB's greatness...
  15. ...continuing with more BN- Lonnie Smith- "I Can't Stand It", Live at the Club Moz. (not credited to JB, but it is) Lou Donaldson- "I'm Black and I'm Proud", Say It Loud Stanley Turentine- "I Got the Feeling", unissued Bobby Hutcherson- "Brother Rap", unissued and non-BN- Albert King- "Cold Sweat" the MarKeys- "Dear James Medley", Great Memphis Sound Otis Redding- "Papa's Gotta Brand New Bag", LIve at the Whiskey (road band) Them/Van M.- "Out of Sight" Areosmith- "Mother Popcorn", Live Bootleg Aretha- "Money Won't Change You", Lady Soul Billy Larkin & the Delegates- "Ain't That a Groove" The Who- "Please, Please, Please", "I Don't Mind", "Shout and Shimmy", My Generation[expanded] Los Lobos- "Try Me" more later...
  16. there's many that's been foolhardy enuff to try, and some that did pretty good on the godfather's material, so let's list 'em- [my colon's broke, hate when that happens] First the obvious, Bluenote has more than enuff for a Blue Brown CD- Grant green- "Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing", Carryin' On "Don't Want Nobody"/"Cold Sweat". Shades of Green "In the Middle", Shades of Green "Ain't I Funky Now", Grenn Is Beautiful "Let Yourself Go", unissued ?/?/70
  17. McCartney wrote Drive My Car as am attempt to be as rude as Lennon was in Day Tripper, I think he succeeded "You Can do something inbetween".
  18. Maybe if you point out that the title is illiterate, they'll give you a discount. Seriously, it's a nice recording but not worth $50+ IMHO.
  19. Thanx muchly for the heads up, the only times I've seen Live @ the Garden used it was xpensive and usually beat with a stick to boot...
  20. I have a copy of Bill Perkins on Stage, dom CD, maybe we can work out a trade?
  21. I figured I'd only get one shot at first JB I listened to after I heard the news so I thought about it for a while and picked CD@ of the expanded Live at the Appollo vol.2...ya know where he and the band (and the dancers) go through Bring It Up, Let Yourself Go, I Feel Alright, etc., just building it up til they spring Cold Sweat on an audience who'd never heard it before. Freaking brilliant. That single must've flown off the shelves in Harlem when it was issued shortly thereafter... Both live at the Appllo vil 1 & 2 are amazing, I've never owne vol.3 (revolution of the Mind). I generally prefer the '60s band but I've come to appreciate the '70s stuff more over the years, but then it took me 20 years to get from A love Supreme to Ascension and the're less than a year apart...
  22. To me, amature musician/historian/asshole, American musicians deal with rhythm in either a pre-JB kinda wasy or a post-JB kinda way. It's that simple, "Brand New Bag" actually was just that. Whether that makes him top 5 whatever depends on whether you think rhythm is more important than politics... In any case, a great loss. My personal story - I was in a hotel in Walla Walla WA in the spring of '66 while my dad was interveiwing for a job there and the one thing that sticks in my mind about that trip was seeing JB on TV. He did "Please Please Please" and "Night Train" and the whole capes thing and I was just fascinated (I was 11). Oh, and I fail to see how ragging on obvious hyperbole for being, well hyperbole, is interesting or useful...
  23. Ilistened to a lot of the same stuffs as y'all - Trio Beyond, GG Live @ Club Moz., Miles at the Cellar Door (esp'ly disc 4) - but what I probably listened to more thean anything else, at least since this past summer, is Sonny Sharrock's Highlife. Those of you who heard my blindfold CD know I'm a big fan of Ask the Ages, but I'd never really listened to Highlife til I saw it cheap at a used store and picked it and CW's Thunderbird up for less than the suggested retail for a new copy of Thunderbird (which I've hardly played). Sure, the overall sound is kinda bright and poppy, esp'ly the keyboards, but there's so much Sonny and it's so good. I'm particularly fond of the way he paraphrases the old spiritual "All My Trials" - If religion was a thing that money could buy/Then the rich would live and the poor would die. Has anyone heard his Spaceghost EP?
