I love this session and the sharp contrast between jackie's alto alto and Ike's tenor tenor is one of the big reasons why...

Worst airplane ride ever?
danasgoodstuff replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've never had a truly bad flight experience but my mum had one that's impacted me. We were living in Buffalo NY when I was little in the late '50s and she went to DC to see her dad who was there on forest Service business. On the wayback they hit a big thunder storm in a prop plane, CD3 or Lockheed Electra. Whole nine yards, bumps big sudden descents, etc. Eventually landed in Rochester. Made her v. reluctant to fly ever since. She did fly down when our FB was born prematurely and was in the hospital, but that's 'cause she's her only grandchild. One of the many reasons we drove from OR to Saskatchewan very summer... I used to take the train a lot but other than running late on scheduals that are already slower than when they ran steam, I've never had a particularly bad experience. -
I just listened to the first side of Crazy Baby and think that what JOS does with the A section of the head of "Night In Tunisia" is crazy, baby! Has anyone else ever played it that way, I don't think any of Jimmy's other versions are like this either... If I help finance the trip to RVG's can we put an Avanti or other Studebaker on the cover?

Ray Charles Responsible for Rise of Soul Jazz?
danasgoodstuff replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Put me down as agreeing with "probably true, but probably overstated", or to put it another way 'about as true as such a sweepungly broad statement can be'. -
Late 1960s/early 1970s black-pride soul jazz

Oops, yes the Loud Minority, an obvious riposte to Nixon's Silent Majority... As long as you're doing poetry you could use the Last Poets' "Wake Up Niggers". -
Put me down in the "I like it" column, yes including the covers, esp'ly "Going Out of My Head"--Hank's phrasing on the bridge is a thing of wonder and anything but "straight". But that I think so won't surprixe anyone who's read my posts or heard my BFT... Not Hank's best nor as good as "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" but perfectly enjoyable. If someone discovered an albums worth of Hank doing hits of the day from back in the day I'd buy it in a flash, of course I'd buy previously unknown originals in half a flash...

Frank Foster's The Loud Majority and Jackie Mac's 'Bout Soul might fit the bill here. -
I like, not love, Say It Loud. Sold my LP original at a profit sometime back and was going to get the reissue til I noticed that Water neglected to add the unissued (not rejected) outtake ("Red Top"). As James Brown covers go "Say It Loud" is neither the best (that would be GG "Ain't It Funky Now") nor the worst on BN or elsewhere. There's more than enough JB covers on BN for a full CD, esp'ly if they ignore the erroneous composer credits and include Lonnie Smith's "I Can't Stand It" and the unissued GG "Let Yourself Go" from 5/29/70. Maybe someone should get Lou & Maceo (and/or Pee Wee and/or Fred) together on a date?

I've been v. lucky not to have seriously screwed up my back given that I did manual labor off and on til well past 40. My back was bugging me a little a while back so I went to see my ex who has a manipulation only osteopath practice. She took one look at the Studebaker , put her hands on my back and said "you've been putting your elbow out the window, haven't you?" I had to admit I had. She said "knock It off!", worked on my back a little and I followed her advice and am all better now. I highly reccomend Osteopaths over chiroquackers 'cause an Osteopath is a fully licensed physician who can prescribe drugs, do surgery or manipulation depending on what's appropriate for your situation. A Chiro can only do (different sort of) manipulation so they think everything is your spine whether it reaaly is or not...

I recall it being anounced from stage before and during said gig, may have been in the program too since I carefully mapped out which stage to be at when (it was on the secondary stage, which thankfully had shade unlike the main stage). My wife and I were the Mutt & Jeff couple with funny accents getting sunburned...

Gettin' Pulled Over By The Fuzz...Cuzz
danasgoodstuff replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Recently got three moving violations within 18 mo after nothing for decades (when I was young I drove cab and wrecked 'em on a regular basis, but that's another story). They restricted my license so i couldn't drive between midnight and 5am, not that any of the tickets occured then and no big deal since I'm rarely out then anyways. Just hoping I don't get a ticket in the mail for the speed trap I blew through a few weeks back trying to get back to work from training in the middle of the day (ironically I worked that day to get my full time benefits kickback, a ticket would pretty much eat all that cash up). I need to find out just how accurate the speedo in the Stude is/isn't so I can make sure no more tickets, it doesn't really like to go fast even though it will if pushed (259 V-8 4 barrell automatic). Have talked my way out of a few, including smashing my dad's Volvo when plastered when a teenager in S'toon, I have no idea how I pulled that off... -
Happy B-day to Joe and I'm looking forward to hearing the album he cut with Hank jones at newport this summer with yours truly in attendance!

This is what I love about this place. What could've just been everybody listing their fav Dex, 'not that there's anything wrong with that', has turned into something way more interesting. In principle I agree with Allen, I'm in general highly suspicious of 'hipness' as an attitude/culture/whatever. But in practice I agree with Jim 'cause I just love Dexter's playing, at least when he's on, although I am willing to admit that he wasn't always on and one of the reasons was probably substance use (including alcohol, something I gots my own issues with) and the attitudes surrounding said use. In particular Our Man in Paris seems swaggeringly in control but "Day in the Life of My Tool" sounds just not quite together to me.

At the library I work at some donations get to the collection but most are sold. I always try to make this clear to patrons so they won't feel mislead or disappointed. Most librarians are much more print oriented than music oriented but any reasonably sized library probably has someone knowledgable in charge of acquiring CDs etc. and contacting them could help your stuff into the collection. At Multnomah County we employees definately do not get first pick, we have to go to the annual sale just like any body else, I would think that skimming the good stuff for yourself would be at work rules violation at almost any poblic institution. And yes, library use is very hard on materials of all sorts...

This and the one featuring Canonball(New Wine Old Bottles? I have on a 2fer and get the sessions confused) are my fav Gil w/out Miles. I esp'ly like the bonus track of Spoonful, so much so that I have been know to put it and the renditions by Howlin Wolf, Charlie Patton, Cream, PBBB and the MGs together on mix tapes. After this Gil seemed to lose his attention to detail and just let his bands jam within v. loose parameters... Not that there's anythings wrong with that. Think how much better Muddy With Brass coulda been if Gil had done the charts... I know that Gil had wanted to work with Louis and Lester, were there any other projects that didn't come to fruition?

One apect of this fine album not yet commented upon is the sound quality. Not that I fixate upon sound engineering technicalities when I'm listening to this or anything else; on the contrary, however they did it, what I like about this is that it doesn't call attention to itself as a recording but allows me to hear through the process to the music - what i'm hearing is not the recording but instruments in a room, or as coase as a recording can get. 'Recording studio as an instrument' may be OK for pop, but for jazz I prefer a more documentary approach, even if that may involve some trickery to get there... as for the m,usic itself, I dig, even if none of the tunes are quite as strong as "Beatrice", etc. Which may be an unfair comparison, but any BN with someone from back in the day on it invites exactly that sort of invidious comparison. Thanx muchly for making this AOTW, hadn't listened to it in a while.

Revert back? To some extent we already have, and it ain't pretty... Now to go slightly off topic, it used to be that Check Berry and Bo Diddly were sorts standards for rock bands, is this even true any more or has something else taken these semi-standards place? Feeling old, Dana

So I'm going to have to get some of this software to go from flac to wave, or might it already be in one of the three CD burning programs on computer already? Sorry to be dense but you'd think they'd put info like this on a site that sells downloads...

Love Lefty, nice pic, presumably from after his career went sour... but to get this thread more or less back on track have any of you downloaded the Further East/Further West linked earlier? I've never done anything like that and I'm a little fuzzy on how it works. Do I need any special software installed and is Flac worth the extra $? A little hand holding here would be much appreciated.

I certainly read nof's opening post as "swipes", albiet rather mild and polite ones. Your millage may vary... Point is, it's not necessary to prefer 'swing' in general over any other style in order to dig what a fine session this is. I personally love Monk, Coltrane (right up to the end) and Ayler too but think this is indeed a fine session. J. de Valk in his Ben bio dismisses this and Sweets in general by saying he played the same solo over and over...but then he doesn't like the session with Tatum either so what does he know? He loved the spirituals session discussed above, that's why I asked about it. I agree with the comments about how nice and airy the rhythm section is here and don't think it necessary to put down Oscar P (my fellow Canadian) in order to praise them (and now we've come full circle).

I have all of these (now if I only had time to listen!), the're all v. nice but kind of an unadventurous bunch of choices...or am I just too jaded?

I remember liking the playing by Cecil and the rest on this one but not liking that the poetry bits weren't seperate tracks so you could(n't) edit your way around them. Maybe if it had been better poetry...

How about "Ferry Cross the Mersey" with a Trane/Elvin feel, all ruboto like "Alabama" then snapping into tempo for the bridge...or am I nuts?
