  1. A good friend of mine, who used to be a big Springsteen fan and whose opinions on rock albums I heartily respect, just sent me this brief write up on this album: “I’ve been listening to Bruce Springsteen’s new album Letter to You and on first listening most of the songs sounded like something I’d heard before or even, at worst, something being played by a Springsteen covers’ band. With repeated plays, however, and casting aside my prejudices built up against Springsteen’s largely overblown and self-important music over the past twenty years and more, the songs and the band come into their own. The E String Band sound almost as good as they did in the '70s and '80s, with the suffocating over-production of his albums from The Rising in 2002 onwards now thankfully absent. Yes, it’s still a big booming sound but the album sounds refreshingly live, explained by the fact that it was recorded as just that in only five days. Three of the songs even date back to before his first album Greetings from Asbury Park in 1973. It’s been frustrating waiting such a long time, but I’ve finally been taken back to the '70s and '80s when the intensity, pure exhilaration and uplifting nature of Springsteen's music meant so much to me.”
  2. Same here! But nevertheless I still prefer when he sticks to alto 🎷
  3. There aren’t, according to Peter Losin’s Miles Ahead discography.
  4. Ken, I guess you are referring to: http://fatswaller.org/fatscd.html Jim: In any case, there are plenty of Fats Waller broadcasts and airchecks out of the JSP collection, plus several private recordings, as well as some alternative takes from commercial recordings. So, being a Fats Waller completist is not that easy.
  5. This 2016 CD, produced by his mate and stride master Louis Mazetier and issued by French label Black&Blue, is a very relevant addition to François Rilhac's very reduced output as a leader: only four commercial albums released under his name. On top of that, we have his contribution to discs by clarinetist Maxime Saury, Joel Lacroix Jazz Orch, Jean Loup Longnon Big Band, Marcel Zanini's groups, Buster Benton, Bert De Kort & his Dutch Dixieland Pipers and Gilbert Leroux Washboard groups, with some piano solo features.
  6. Well, this pretty much covers the commercial discs released under Rilhac's name. Then we have his contribution to discs by clarinetist Maxime Saury, Joel Lacroix Jazz Orch, Jean Loup Longnon Big Band, Marcel Zanini's groups, Buster Benton, Bert De Kort & his Dutch Dixieland Pipers and Gilbert Leroux Washboard groups, with some piano solo features.
  7. Still Rilhac time! Stridin' along my keyboard at the office!
  8. What f*****g genius! Gone way too soon in tragic circumstances... This 2016 CD, produced by his mate and stride master Louis Mazetier, is a very relevant addition to his very reduced output as a leader.
