    Dave Black RIP

Sad to report that former Ellington drummer Dave Black died yesterday at his home near Petaluma CA. He was with Duke's orchestra from 1953 to 1955. R.I.P.

  3. Specially if brownie offers you one of his "wine specialties"!
  4. Was this material reissued on the mammoth 24-cd Centennial box? Yes, Greg. "RCA 22/15" quote means "RCA Centennial Edition, disc 22, track 15"
  5. Recently published and recommended (see specific thread) is the "Creole Rhapsody" 2CD compilation on ASV/Living Era. And, besides the Duke Ellington: 1936-40 Small Group Sessions (#235) Mosaic box set, there's more Ellington coming in the scheduled Various Artists – The Jazz Piano (MCD-1012) Mosaic single CD: Guess this is: June 20, 1965. Pittsburgh. Concert at the Civic Arena. Jazz Piano Workshop. Duke Ellington & Earl Hines: Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, p; Larry Gales, b; Ben Riley, d. TPA3356 RCA LPM-3499 RCA:22/15, L&R:1/15.2 and SDT:19 House Of Lords -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. This recently released 2 CD compilation on the ASV/Living Era label is highly recommended as an approach to the music of the orchestra in the 30s (a period very poorly covered on CD so far). Sound is very good (very "vivid", with the separation of the instruments very clear, and the remaining surface noise doesn't bother me at all) and the selection is great... though you can't go wrong with 30s EKE. 10. Yes, but that was many months ago. Not sure what has happened with the DETS series after Storyville was purchased. I recently asked in the duke-lym list if there's an expected release date for those new volumes and got no replies.
  11. Click on each of the 54 jazz musicians to see the drawings EDIT to add the link to the English version of the website
  12. Rest in peace. Another great is gone. A personal favorite of mine.
  13. God bless "Cañoncito" Puskas. Kopa, Rial, Di Stefano, Puskas & Gento. One of the best forward lines. Ever.
  14. Thanks for starting this thread, Chuck. Count me as a Harry Carney die-hard fan! The sound of Duke Ellington's orchestra wouldn´t have been the same without him. I only regret he didn't record more as a leader... To my knowledge these are his only leader dates: -the "Harry Carney's Big Eight" HRS from 1946 -the Wax date from 1947 (two sides) -two sides recorded by Norman Granz for the Jazz Scene album -the "Harry Carney with strings" disc (despite negative opinions, I love this album) -the "Harry Carney and the Dukes men" (1958)

  16. Just came from the Marc Copland Quartet (with Tim Hagans) concert. A nice one, though I would have desired more solo space for Marc.
  17. I recently bought 'Jay McShann/Milt Buckner - Kansas City Memories' on the French Black&Blue label. Listening to "Milt Jay Bird" (co-credited to McShann and Buckner and played as a two-pianos+bass+drums feature)... am I wrong or this is just a variation of James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout"?
  18. I have no news on this regard, but will ask at the dukelym list.... No news from duke-lym. BTW, I ordered a few DETS volumes that I was still missing the other day.... been in a Ducal hunting lately.
  19. I had also spotted this one and put it on my wish list... FWIW, here´s the cover: And the info available at the Mighty Quinn website:
  20. Nah! Surely it is Tony Manero...
