18.- The black colour of the boxes fits well with my bookshelves and with the colour of the spine of most of my books. And with the design of my stereo and my TV. 19.- I have a shelf with the perfect size for them. 20.- If I didn´t collect Mosaics, I would collect cars... Mosaics are much cheaper and that´s good for my budget! 21.- I like how it sounds... M-O-S-A-I-C 22.- Whenever they come home, I love to explain to my friends what on hell are those black boxes with silver or gold writing on their spines. -

Just received an e-mail from Mosaic. There are 12 sets left. Go ahead, guys! B) -
Thanks, brownie. I´m still broadening my "classic" Cecil Taylor collection. I only have one post-66 release ("It is in the brewing luminous"), so I´ll wait to pick latest Taylor. Just look at how AMG describes this IIO collective in their review for their first release (the one you mentioned): "Drawing musicians from across several disparate disciplines, the group tends to travel between free jazz, Italian folk traditions, contemporary classical ideas, and general good-natured wackiness, in some sense the Southern European version of bands like Willem Breuker's Kollektief. The "kitchen sink" approach, while enjoyably dizzying at times, tends to work against cohesiveness in certain compositions and may aggravate the listener just settling into a particularly nice section" From what I´ve listened so far (not much, really), I can´t agree with the "kitchen sink" approach, whatever this may be. I find their music "organizedly disorganized" though actually very eclectic. As for the "wackiness", good-natured or not...

Just picked "European concerts 94-97" on Nel Jazz label and I´m really shocked by this orchestra! It´s a compilation of live dates, combining some very "arranged" orchestral passages with some free/avant-garde soloing. The least I can say is that it´s a very "eclectic" and "wild" ensemble. Not easy listening, for sure! From AMG I conclude their discography is rather brief. Litania Sibilante looks like the next one to pick. Any further recommendations and/or comments on this European orchestra?

I spent a few minutes on a Disc Collector´s Fair in Recoletos, Madrid. Not much of interest for jazzers, unless you´re a vynil collector. Anyway (and as expected ) I picked this three CDs, € 14.00 in total!: -Ornette on tenor -Italian Instabile Orchestra: European Concerts 1994-97 -Horace Parlan: Up and down (Spanish Time Life edition) B)

Don´t believe any of the guys posting above... MOSAIC SETS ARE DA SHIT If you´d become a Mosaic-addict, prepare yourself to spend tons of dollars purchasing sets and sets from their website... If you´d become a Mosaic-superaddict, prepare yourself to have a second mortgage trying to collect OOP sets from members of this board or on e-bay... This will ruin your budget... and even could ruin your marriage (in case you have a wife)... B) So, don´t believe them. AVOID MOSAIC SETS!!!!!!!!! PS: now I´ll go and listen to my last two purchases, the Morgan/Shorte Vee Jays and the HRS sets... then I´ll head for disc 3 of the OOP Sam Rivers set I recently purchased from a member of this board.

Mine too. Probably DHL now owns Airborne Express. BTW, I´ll follow your advice and order from now on by surface mail, though sometimes this shipping option between USA and Spain implies huge delays. -

Great you´re getting into NO jazz style, wesbed. Try with some King Oliver groups, any Jelly Roll Morton, early Bechet, some Johnny Dodds... you´ll find many, many details in those wonderful artists and in their collective improvisation. -

My Morgan/Shorter and HRS sets will ARRIVE TODAY!!!! (incredibly, I ordered them this Monday!!! ) I always use the surface shipping option - cheaper and safer (as far as damages are concerned). And then, swiss customs and postal services are incredibly slow on times, so I don't count on getting them too soon - and as our dear friend couw notes, I've got too many discs to listen to, anyway Tell us what you think of the music once you start listening! ubu In my last two Mosaic orders (one by surface mail, this last one by Airborne Express) I´ve had to pay customs. (Shit, way too much customs fees!!!). But in my previous 30+ orders from Mosaic and some other on-line stores from USA, I never had to pay any customs. Many of those packages were much more voluminous and expensive than these two last ones. So, I guess it´s a change of policy in Spanish customs. Maybe because of the NEW RELATIONSHIP STATE between Spain and USA.... (Fuck politics, btw) B) -

Thanks for the corrections, Mike. You´re very critical with Lord´s discography. I find it a very useful tool for us collectors, with its mistakes and omissions. For the latter, it´s very remarkable with non-US musicians or, at least, I´ve searched and checked Spanish musicians and there are a lot of omissions for musicians and sessions. Well, I´m supposing it pretends to be a COMPLETE discography for non-US musicians as well. And I bought the last edition, version 4.4, a few weeks ago. So, I can´t compare with previous versions. Thanks again for you input.

More Czech jazz*: The Veleband Big Band - Ellington in Prague. A tribute to the Duke (ARTA, 1999) Czech modern big band paying homage to the Ellington / Strayhorn songbook. It includes some nice arrangements, though I´m not accustomed to hear the highly featured electric guitar on the spotlight when hearing to Ellingtonia. I don´t like the heavy electric bass and the keyboards on some passages, though. Good horns sections, specially the reeds and the trombone. Earthy (and a bit rough) vocals on "I ain´t got nothing but the blues" and "Don´t get around much anymore". The opening of "St. Louis toodle-oo" is........... SACRILEGE! THIS IS REALLY SACRILEGE, UBU!!! If Bubber Miley would stand up from his grave... The guitar passages turn things right again! Interesting disc. Got it about three years ago, but haven´t played it for too long. *copied from the What are you listening to? thread

How many Ellingtonia songs can you count? B)
-
... these two... and 2.382 tunes more, believe me!
-
Yeah. Jimmie Noone´s orchestra with Earl Hines, that is!
