Need a rec on a very good guide-book for Paris
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, we're back from our European excursion. Due to signifcant help and guidance from our own M.Brownie I left Paris with 3 0r 4 pounds of cds and Lps, not to mention a moderate ding in a couple of my credit cards. Used vinyl is priced about 30-40% higher than in NY stores, used cds are priced about the same. -
Flying tonight. I won't need a folio, but a compact guide-book for someone who's visiting Paris for 5 days only [my 5th or 6th trip, but haven't been since 1998, so my old guide-book is a bit obsolete]. I thought one of our jet-setting members would suggest a good one. Also, the heads-up on music stores will be very much appreciated. I'll have the internet access there, so I'll be able to check your recs in vivo. Au revoir!

33rd Annual Jazz Record Bash-South Plainfield, NJ

Me. Saturday afternoon. Anyone wants a ride? -
Apparently your moniker had no desired effect. An a more serious note, I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.

No takers so far. I guess I'll have to put it on the curb... along with the custom book case that I made. That one is available also [holds ~ 800 books and about 1,000 cds]...

Here's the deal - we are moving and I have this vinyl storage cabinet that I built a couple of years ago. Capacity is probably about 1500 Lps. It's located in Brooklyn and it's FREE to anyone who desires it. I'm giving you guys the first dibs on it, before I post it on the Vinyl Asylum.

Yesterday, after receiving the above-mentioned email from Mosaic I ordered 3 Byrd/Pepper sets, 1 for myself, 1 as a present for someone and 1 for an acquantance overseas who has no credit card. I placed 3 separate orders and used my work and home addresses for shipping. All 3 orders went through. Bizarre - I can't order 2 Mosaic Byrd/Pepper sets in one order, but ordering 3 sets in 3 separate orders is OK. Of course I had to pay for shipping 3 times, instead of one, and lost a few dollars on that, but I don't mind. Bottom-line - I could have ordered 10 Byrd/Pepper sets if I wanted to use 10 different shipping addresses in 10 different orders, I suppose. So much for the Mosaic "one customer-one set" directive.

Placed an order for 2 Byrd/Adams sets today via Mosiac web-site. One for me, one for a friend; and got this email from Mosaic - Thank you for your recent order for the Byrd/Adams. As you are aware the set is on Last Chance and all of our customers have not yet received the catalog and therefore have not been advised of the situation. As many customers wait until the set is running low, we want to afford them the opportunity to purchase the set and therefore we are only processing single sets for customers. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs! I wonder if members of the Politburo are aware...

It's been published?! When I spoke to Mulgrew Miller about the Newborns about 5 or so years ago he had said that Clavin had written a memoir, but I had no idea it was out. Do you know where I can buy this book?

You have 2 speakers then...might have told me that earlier.

First off, I'm a Newborn nut. Clark, both our Lps are in Mono, trust me and if I'm wrong I'll join the Kenny G fan club. I have the Japanese k2 stereo cd, like I said it sounds wide 'n' weird. I also listened to the original black label Mono that I bought off eBay [maybe it was green, I don't remember since it had an unadvertised scratch, so I sent it back to the seller], and it is one of those cases when the reissue is superior. Too bad about the cover. Sidenote - Try to get your hands on the rare Japanese Philips recording from 1977, with Allen Jackson and Frank Gant, it's a f@#$ing killer. Titled [aptly] Phineas Is Genius.

I sold my set after gathering all the included albums either on cds or on Lps. The sonics of this Mosaic weren't something to rave about, imo. At least one cd was mastered off an old Lp, clicks and all. Don't remember hearing one was a dub. Do you remember which one? FWIW, I have the material otherwise - not the Mosaic. ← To my best recollection, it was the disc which contained the Night in Tunisia. It's been a while, so I may be wrong as to which cd it was, but I remember hearing pops & clicks. Nothing very noticeable, but they were there.

We're moving, so the turntable is out of my reach. Has been for a month or so. Which doesn't mean the addiction is loosening its hold, so I'm still on the prowl. Got the Trout Mask Replica in NM- today. Not the original Straight label, not the Bizarre label, but the mid-70s Reprise. Still, well worth the $10 spent. This ought to bring the bedroom community where we're moving to its knees when I'll play it first thing in the morning one balmy Sunday.

I remember a couple of years back I bought some BN Japan Lps from a board member and I asked him for a buck off ea., to save on shipping, since I bought 5 or 6 [and I still feel uneven about it], but for some reason this here just refuses to sit well. I think I might be ready for another lecture on good taste and free market... -

I love the indignation and a free[!] lesson in macro-economics. Here's a lesson in economics from me - I'd rather give this cd away than haggle over two dollars. -

Note to board members - please don't send me any more low offers. If I wanted to negotiate on the price I would have wrote so. Thank you.
