A friend asked me to help with a lecture/presentation on the Jewish jazz musicians at his temple. My short list looks something like this - Benny Goodman Artie Shaw Zoot Sims Stan Getz Paul Desmond Buddy Rich [?] Terry Gibbs John Zorn [oy vey] Feel free to throw other names in. The more the merrier. Also, which Jewish melodies/folk songs that received the jazz treatment would you play for a large group of 70 y.o.+ people while they're gumming lox with cream cheese on byalys? ["Jewish Melodies In Jazz Time" is the obvious choice]

What have you done for a living?

Me too!!!!!! My first on the books gig was at the one in Rockefeller Center, till the Japanese bought it and tore it down. $4.50/hr! I also watched over women's underwear there. Since I came to the States in '89, in chronological order till my present gig - Cashier at Weber's Discount joint in NY Masseuse Delivery boy Furniture Mover Tree doctor [a bitch of a job, but a $100/day in cash was good dough in Summer of '96] Then I graduated, thank god. -
I built this shelving unit over one weekend [everything was bought at the Home Depot. They even cut the wood according to my caculations.] She's a beauty, isn't she?

Don't know about the Nippon jazz scene, but their Swing Journal kicks ass. Any other jazz rag I've seen looks laughable in comparison. I bought 3 or 4 issues, even though I don't read a dime's worth of Japanese. Photos and overall quality of production is awesome. It just oozes class. Tower used to sell these, not any more, I think.

Check out Monk's jacket. Awesome!!! brownie, I think you should order the catalogue [i'll pick one up for you, if you want]. It in itself will become a collectable. You never know, usually after the featured lots, like Trane's and Bird's horns, which will probably be offered in the middle of the sale, the enthusiasm of the public will diminish, as it often happens in auctions, and some things will fetch a low price [j'espere].

Thanks. I think I might even afford one of the 400 lots. Trane's sheet music won't go for thousands, I think. Bird's horn will probably be in high 5 figures, maybe even 6 figures.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/01/21/features/jazz.html I will attend, if not for the buying then at least to look at these rare items. Things like the ones mentioned in the article are offered for public sale once in a life-time. http://www.guernseys.com/Auctions/Jazz/About.html

I did pick up both of these titles and both were worth the money paid. The 2 cd set especially is indispensable for Sarah Vaughan fans. I love it!!!

Etymotic. Give 'em a try. I love mine.

Isaac Bashevis Singer - THE SLAVE What a book! Unbelievable. I haven't read Singer since college and forgot his juicy, sometimes wildly humorous, sometimes terrifying way of writing. ..A Jew named Jacob is taken captive by the Bogdan Chmielnicki-led Cossacks in the great massacre of the Jews in Poland and Ukraine in the 1640s when 300,000 Jews were killed in most horrible ways. His two young children and wife are murdered by the Cossacks, he himself is sold as a slave to a Polish farmer. Slowly, he falls in love with his master's widowed daughter Wanda. After years of captivity, he is bought out by the fellow surviving Jews of his shtetl... The language of the book has many Jewish overtones, turns, stops, and u-turns; no wonder Singer wrote all his books in Yiddish. His prose is reminiscent of Babel, but none of Babel's novellas reach the depth of Singer's novel, and Sholom-Aleihem, to which he was an equal in many ways.

Wow! I have both the Stereo and Mono pressings.

Terribly sad news about a fellow forum member
Dmitry replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
Terribly sad news. I've dealt with Ken since the BNBB inception in '99. He was BY FAR the most dilligent and accomodating cd seller on board. I know, this is not the right way to remember someone, but that was the extent of my knowing him. RIP, Ken. -
1 for 1 swap Lps - Arthur Blythe's Metamorphosis

Which one is it? Academy opened a warehouse in Broo? The best Syrian joint in the hood [bY A WIDE MARGIN[lol]] - Damascus Gate on 5th Ave & 73rd. If you're a meat eater, Fatteh Bil Lahmeh is amazing. On the run - try the Shish Ta'wook sandwich. They put some nice greens in there. And a little mint. I love that. -
Is this set recommended for someone who doesn't want to [financially] dive head first into the pre-swing era? It looks like a good primer, what do you think?

I know that place. Forgot the name, it's on the right side if you're going from 4th to 5th, across the street from a barber shop. French-Moroccan Cafe something. If you're into fish you MUST eat at the Bahry, on Bay Ridge Avenue between 4th and 5th. Best fucking fish I've ever had. It's across the street from a joint called Ramallah. -

Holy Cow is gone?! When did this happen? That was the last holdout in Brooklyn. Not a single half-decent record store left, I think. -
I was just checking out Mal's discography and ... I wouldn't be surprised if noone else had done more recordings in Japan than him. There must be at least 20-30 sessions. How come?

If it's nothing valuable[if it is, then eBay is unbeatable], just make up a list of whatever you got, then post a note in a nearby university's school of music and an ad in the local paper that you want to sell the whole collectio, nothing piece meal. If you're thinking of selling to a used record dealer, you'll get pittance. Good luck!

$5 - $10 would be a realistic price in NM-/NM- cond.

Jazz Kong on eBay Anyone rememember a cute little film with Emma Thompson and Jeff Goldblum, titled The Tall Guy? Goldblum played a barely employed American actor in London who made the lead in the musical production of The Elephant Man. I remember one number in particular that went something like this - Open your eyes, prepare for the worst, Here comes the ugliest man in the Universe.. For some reason looking at this made me remember that flick.

As we say in Russian - Everything new is well forgotten old. I've been pestering y'all with the mystery jazz photos for about a year now, I think. Got one or two more I'd like to decipher.

Don't worry, with enough practice you will be just as good.

I have a couple of Xanadu Lps; they can be had rather inexpensively now and then. Do the cd reissues contain any bonus material?
