I saw SR 3 times in the last 5 years and would call his playing pedestrian and the concerts as a whole boring and disappointing. These are pretty strong words, I know, but believe me when I tell you that I am the biggest fan of his music from fifities and some sixties albums. I am not a masochist, so why did I go to see him twice after the first concert burned a hole through my heart? Because, based on comments of connoisseurs like yourself, I was hoping that a diamond would emerge from the ashes and SR would perform a rare gem. Instead, somewhere in the middle of the last concert I started to hope that Sonny would perform a coup de grace. On myself. But, for better or worse, we both survived. -

Re: SR being uncomfortable in presence of recording equipment. Is this something that happened to him gradually, as he gotten older? 'cause he sure was in fine shape on all those 1950s studio Lps. -
I found that to be the case also. That's why I decided not to interview him when I was enthusiastic about interviews. He has a set routine of answers/yarns [doesn't mean it won't be fun to talk to him, quite the contrary; as Michael pointed out, he's quite charming]. If your friend does go through with interviewing him, I would like to read what he has to say about John Dennis and Lee Morgan's coming up. Also, about the former East Coast players who moved to LA in the 60s to compose for the films/tv.

"Complete Motown Singles" Vol.2 due out May 13
Dmitry replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just ordered my own Vol. 1. I just "KNOW" this will be spinning at the office day in/day out. -
I'm not an audio repair man, but I highly doubt that a preamp tube could do the damage you're describing. RE: what's better - solid state or tube. Who gives a shit. I used to have ss amps and tube amps/preamps, now I have different ss and tube amps/preamps. RE: Beatles. "ss amps tell you how each Beatle's voice sounds like better than tubes, etc." Bull-shit. I knew which Beattle's voice was which when I was twelve years old. If you need a solid state amp to tell you that, you got to get your ears flushed.

Hans, have you seen STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN, a documentary about the Funk Brothers? What an amazing film! -
Holy f@#$k, that was cheap! $128.50 Maybe this is the reason - I'm very sorry, but the four very large Mosaic sets I am offering this week are available to U.S. bidders only due to weight, packaging, and shipping costs.

Mike, what about all of the Saxophone Colossus? That should've been a major hit, I would imagine. I wonder what were Sonny's and Trane's best-selling albums [when Trane was still alive, that is]. I wouldn't dare and guess, but if I had to I'd say My Favorite Things [or Soultrane] and the Colossus. -

How much money was Coltrane offered for signing with Impulse! right about that time? Also, around that time, in terms of recognition and popularity who was more of a "brand name", Trane or Sonny? My take - Sonny, simply because he was in the limelight longer, but I could be wrong. -
HEADS-UP - BARGAIN ALERT I was at a local deep discount book emporium yesterday and they had a dozen or so of the BN Cook books [so to speak] on sale for about $6. It's a paper-back edition, which normally retails for about $15. I bought one copy for myself, haven't started on it yet. I could pick up a copy for anyone who's interested. PM me.

Oops. I maligned the innocent brother. It was Dennis that I didn't care for. Thanks for correcting me. You just keep diggin' the hole deeper .. Dennis Farnon is a friend of mine! Is this supposed to shame me somehow? If I don't care for Farnon's arranging of When My Lady Sleeps, I'm stepping on some kind of an absolute truth?

My score at the Edison, NJ record fair today.

Re: Franz Jackson. Jim, the producer is our own Papa Albertson, therefore it's on Riverside, part of the Living Legends series. C. Albertson should write an auto-biography. Could be some interesting readin'. Up to about 1971, at least. -

Yep, got the sampler, if I remember correctly for about $5, a while ago. You're right, it's a nice little record. I saw maybe 4 of these samplers at today's fair, prices varied from $10 to $35, independent of condition. Go figure. I was also itching to buy the Billie Holiday Jazztone Lp, but it was like $40, so I passed. One note - there were virtually no Lion-era BN's, few Prestiges, very few Riversides. I used to see that stuff pretty regularly, it ws pricey, but it was there. My guess - it's all going to eBay. -
Semi-annual Edison, NJ fair is nothing to rave about, but keeps producing solid buys for me. All of these are original pressings in NM/NM- condition. Clarke-Boland Band - Jazz is Universal Cozy Cole - A Cozy Conception of Carmen Franz Jackson's Original Jass All-Stars Marian McPartland Plays Music of Leonard Bernstein Cecil Payne Performing Charlie Parker Music Shelly Manne - My Fair Lady Stan Getz - What the World Needs Now Gerald Wilson - Portraits Shelly Manne - At the Blackhawk vol. 3 Mick Goodrick - In Passing Harvie Swartz - Smart Moves Denny Zeitlin - Trio Ray Charles - Genius+Soul=Jazz Jimmy Giuffre - Music for People, Birds ... Alice Coltrane - Radha-Krsna Nama MJQ - The Sheriiff Gary Burton - Throb Victor Fledman - Stop the World ... Jimmy Smith's Greatest Hits [2 Lps]-BN Folkways - The Music of New Orleans - Vol.4 Olatunji - Zungo! Cecil Payne - Brookfield Andante [never seen this one before] Ahmad Jamal - Standard-Eyes Rolf & Joachim Kuhn - Impressions of New York The Count's Men, on Jazztone [i'm sort of a Jazztone collector] Byers-Newman 6tet & Eddie Bert - East Coast Sounds, on Jazztone & non-Jazz The 64 Motown Original Hits - 4 Lp set Pink Floyd - DSOTM MoFi Grand-total - $185 Nothing really spectacular, but difinitely not bad. I'm well stocked till the next fair, a big one in South Plainfield in August. That's the one to look forward to. If anyone want to give their $.02 about the stuff I bought, please don't hesitate to do so.

I hate to be a lone voice of dissent, especially in time of Phil's grieving, but what I hear in Farnon's arranging is some major syrup.
-
Perhaps I'm missing something, but from listening to Farnon's work on While My Lady Sleeps [my least favorite P. Newborn record] and Tangence I'd say there were dozens of arrangers whose music I prefer to his. That being said, it's always sad when someone passes, so RIP.

If you're not an audiophile then why are you in the market for $999.99 speakers?

Mosaic #102 The Complete Pacific Jazz and Capitol Recordings of the Original Gerry Mulligan Quartet and Tentette with Chet Baker (3 CDs or 5 LPs) vs. The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker (4 CDs) I just bought the latter at the local establishment and was wondering if the Mosaic set and this PJ set are interchangeable.

I was asking if there's ever any good jazz there. What banana tree are you living on?

You're kidding right? 70 square feet? I wish I was kidding. http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sub/64693746.html This is NOT atypical.
