  1. Wilson is tapping into the larger audience these days. belly of the Sun was in the *female contemporary* genre. I was in the audience when she taped her Bravo special. Almost 3 hours of live Cassandra Wilson, q&a , performances from the Belly of the Sun and all. It was very good, but she didn't sing jazz that night, which she very well can do. Brad, do yourself a favor, pick up Jimmy Scott's *Holding back the years* and your faith in seeing jazz singers live will be restored. Like the man said, it's not the song , it's the singer..
  2. The one Vandermark cd I heard that I really like is Design in Time. His Joe Harriott tribute, Straight Lines, was a bit of a disappointment, and the Sun Ra/Funkadelic disc, Spaceways Incorporated was also nothing to write home about... I've heard him live maybe 5 times in different musical incarnations and wasn't inspired to get into his music more.
  3. I'd also like the Mercury blues box set. Don't see the free shipping on my bmg browser. Anyone knows if there's a code for that?
  4. Aside from his appearance with Stanley Turrentine on 1984's Straight Ahead cd, looks like his only recording for the label in it's hey days was with ST on That's Where It's At, from January of 1962. He contributed 4 out of 6 compositions. ST appears on McCann's *Les McCann Ltd. in New York* which was recorded for Pacific Jazz in December of 61, a month before ST's own BN date. Both on the level records. I wonder if it was a contractual thing for McCann. Coincidentally, looks like That's Where It's At was the last{?} ST album with piano, before he went the organ way. I must say too bad ... because this record is a real sleeper.
  5. Actually, it was $19 and the sticker on the wrapper says "Contains 20 minutes of unissued Miles". I think it's got to be the standard Fontana issue. I wonder if the Japanese one sounds better. But as it stands there's not much to complain about, liner notes, photos and all. Quite good sound on this cd, beats my cassette copy many-fold. A Miles fan must-have! Nothing like it in his oevre. BTW, dig the avatar, Lon. I got the vinyl. Sun Ra on roksichord!
  6. What did I get last week for $17 at Virgin? Fontana 836 305-2 Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud Complete Recordings - 26 tracks. Is this the latest remaster ?

  8. Very broad topic. Depends what jazz. In order of importance- Black Saint and Soul Note are #1, overall, imo. Followed by ECM, and small and smaller independent labels, like Hat, Gramavision and OmniTone[so far 10 for 10 for me from this label]. Welcome to the 21st century. I'm just catching up to the 1920s myself.
  9. I know what photo you're talking about, Tom. I always liked it myself. As it happened I purchased a signed photograph of hers from a 3rd party and was wondering if there ever was a commercial run. The seller, a dealer, had no information. Photo came from a private collection. In short - I love it!
  10. Inquiring mind wants to know. Hers are some of the most vivid images I've seen.
  11. Chet Baker on Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding. Not bad either.
  12. 1.Please ask him about his view of the race relations from the stand-point of the record label owner in 50s-60s. 2.Please ask him about the way different jazz label owners behaved towards each other, what were the infamous dealings, contract swaps, etc and on the opposite, friendships, even though the latter sounds unlikely. Thank you.
  13. Sonny Rollins - You Don't Know What Love Is as loud as my lungs can take
  14. Is that ALL the master and alternate takes or is there something extra left off? Is this just the studio material or live as well?
  15. Booker Little 4 & Max Roach
  16. Apology accepted. Strangely enough the discographical data on this set is pretty scarce on the web. It covers 41-47, *leader* dates by Lester Young, Dinah Washington, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Cozy Cole, the Kansas City Seven, Charlie Shavers with Earl Hines, Benny Morton, Rex Stewart, the Keynoters, Pete Brown, Red Norvo, bassist Billy Taylor, Jonah Jones, George Wettling, Chubby Jackson, Barney Bigard, Bill Harris, Willie Smith, Corky Corcoran, Milt Hinton, J.C. Heard, Irving Fazola, Bud Freeman, Ted Nash, Babe Russin, Manny Klein, Herbie Haymer, Clyde Hurley, Arnold Ross, Juan Tizol, Benny Carter, Marie Bryant, Bernie Leighton, Ann Hathaway, Joe Thomas, George Barnes, Lennie Tristano, Danny Hurd, Dave Lambert and Buddy Stewart, Gene Sedric, Neal Hefti and Red Rodney. Thanks all!!! ... FRANK: Welcome, new comers. The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances. I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it! You, Kruger. My son tells me your company stinks! GEORGE: Oh, God. FRANK: (To George) Quiet, you'll get yours in a minute. Kruger, you couldn't smooth a silk sheet if you had a hot date with a babe.. I lost my train of thought. (Frank sits down, Jerry gives a face that says "That's a shame". Gwen walks in) GWEN: Jerry! JERRY: Gwen! How'd you know I was here? GWEN: Kramer told me. KRAMER: Another Festivus miracle!

  18. I'd stay way from the cd cleaning with tooth paste method. It contains abrasives. Especially the baking soda variety. There are places that will resurface scratched cds for you. Some used stores do it.
  19. Holy smokes. Those are some good prices. I'm not a member, can't see those boxes on their web-site. Are they still there? Are those sale prices available to new members ?
  20. thanks Dmitry..... what other preamps have you heard before coming to your conclusion? Is the bottom end nice and tight? My man, it's all that and more. EAR, GRADO,Monolithic PS-1[still have it. quite good for $350, but no match for the P5]. Of course the P10 is a reference phono stage and a bit more than your spending amt, but read up on the P5. It's a keeper.
  21. Get a BAT VK-P5 or VK-P10...nothing's better.
  22. How's the sound quality?
  23. Ok music, cheesy cover. You can buy the original for maybe $2-3.
  24. Spoke to a customer rep at the USPS. Did you know that USPS has toll-free customer service?! She thinks it went back West because it was sent media and went to a bulk mail processing center in NJ first. But why Illinois and not Brooklyn? I left her pondering. She said to check back with her tomorrow. Perhaps we'll have a donut or something...
