It's not true. I used to have a 70s blue label Stereo pressing and it was excellent, much better than the cd.

Mine seem to be OK as well. But who am I to say what's good?! B) I have a 3LP Columbiia early 60s Billie Holiday boxed set that covers a lot of the master takes and it sounds great, taking into consideration tha age of the recordings. This new set must sound wonderful. I'm thinking about getting me one.

Wednesday, June 11th: $15.00/6:30 p.m. one set only Early Set @ The Jazz Gallery with Dr. Lonnie Smith-organ, Peter Bernstein-guitar, Fukushi Tainaka-drums. It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Lonnie Smith to inaugurate our newly acquired Hammond B-3 organ. Since the mid-sixties, both as accompanist for George Benson and on releases under his own name, he has been a major figure in defining this instrument's place in jazz. Whether under the rubric of "soul-jazz" / "funk-jazz" or whatever the designation, Dr. Lonnie Smith can lay into a groove and sustain it in ways that are both viscerally and cerebrally satisfying. His recordings as a leader--most frequently on Blue Note and Music Masters--have, over the years, featured such artists as Fathead Newman, Lee Morgan and Grover Washington Jr. He has for many years now been heard regularly in Lou Donaldson's band. And, in that band, the enormously talented Peter Bernstein has played a lusciously alert guitar. Though clearly influenced by the great Wes Montgomery, Peter's accumulating discography--including five dates as a leader--makes clear that he is defining himself in ways that go well beyond that one influence. His righteous chops have been honed through regular work in the bands of Larry Goldings, Jesse Davis and Jimmy Cobb, among many others. As with Dr. Lonnie and Peter, drummer Fukushi Tainaka now has a regular place in Lou Donaldson's band. All in all a wonderful way to welcome the organ to its new home. So, attendance is required at this last-until-next-Fall edition of The Early Set.

I was there as well, for the second set. Great set of music is all I can say. . Two 25-30 min. tunes[figuratively speaking] , the first one was a driving heavy blues with great solos by Roy Campbell and Moondoc. Campbell matched his intensity all the way. It sounded like ORnette's Stockholm Trio Sessions with a very heavy pace. Jamal announced the second one as"This is the one everyone asks for these days." And they played Summertime. Moondoc had an unbelievable, 20 bar solo[maybe longer] on Alto, very moving, going back and forth into the theme, and Campbell was pretty great, actually. The band sounded like Jamal composed Summerime. And that's pretty good, I think. Her'es the personnel listing, before I forget it. Khan Jamal Quintet featuring Khan Jamal - vibes Roy Campbell - pocket trumpet, trumpet, flute on Summertime Jemeel Moondoc - alto sax Dylan Taylor - bass Dwight James - drums There were perhaps 22 people for the second set, including the hosts, and 15 of them carry-over from the previous set. Noone taped it, either. Too bad. It was much better than much of what I heard lately.

It's on Monday's, with Joe Farnsworth presiding, lasts till 2am. St.Nick's goes till 3 or 4 maybe and it has 100x more of the vibe than Smoke. It was once called Luckey’s Rendezvous, in the 40s, when Sonny Rollins and Jackie McLean were kids in the neighborhood. Before that it was called something else, and also a jazz club. Lenox Lounge hosts a pretty smokin' jam on Mondays as well, with Roy Campbell and Zane Massey. Also till 2 or so.

Forgot to add- THE jam is up in Harlem at St.Nick's Pub on Mondays. I think Patience Higgins is in charge of it. THE trumpeter to watch there is Kenyatta Beasley. Smokin' !

Go to Smoke uptown. They hold jams, with a lot of susrprise "pop-ins" by the well-known players. As much as I liked Smalls, their jam sessions were at times nothing more than 20 or so New School students rolling through the changes till 5 am. In recent memory the jams at the Savoy were the tops. That one's gone as well.

Clem, they don't turn the room for the second set, at least not on my memory, so it can get pretty crowded for the 2nd set. Sometimes they do sell out, but it's people like Jason Moran or an occasional hired gun. I don't think there'll be a problem.

Here's what I would do. Get rid of this one, either sell as is or donate to charity, figure out the tax donation, see how much cash you can come up with and how much you're willing to spend. If the tranny will run $2000 rebuilt{!} that means you'll need extra work to fix what the mechanic will fuck up while installing it. Then something else'll go.
