  1. I was there as well, for the second set. Great set of music is all I can say. . Two 25-30 min. tunes[figuratively speaking] , the first one was a driving heavy blues with great solos by Roy Campbell and Moondoc. Campbell matched his intensity all the way. It sounded like ORnette's Stockholm Trio Sessions with a very heavy pace. Jamal announced the second one as"This is the one everyone asks for these days." And they played Summertime. Moondoc had an unbelievable, 20 bar solo[maybe longer] on Alto, very moving, going back and forth into the theme, and Campbell was pretty great, actually. The band sounded like Jamal composed Summerime. And that's pretty good, I think. Her'es the personnel listing, before I forget it. Khan Jamal Quintet featuring Khan Jamal - vibes Roy Campbell - pocket trumpet, trumpet, flute on Summertime Jemeel Moondoc - alto sax Dylan Taylor - bass Dwight James - drums There were perhaps 22 people for the second set, including the hosts, and 15 of them carry-over from the previous set. Noone taped it, either. Too bad. It was much better than much of what I heard lately.
  2. It's on Monday's, with Joe Farnsworth presiding, lasts till 2am. St.Nick's goes till 3 or 4 maybe and it has 100x more of the vibe than Smoke. It was once called Luckey’s Rendezvous, in the 40s, when Sonny Rollins and Jackie McLean were kids in the neighborhood. Before that it was called something else, and also a jazz club. Lenox Lounge hosts a pretty smokin' jam on Mondays as well, with Roy Campbell and Zane Massey. Also till 2 or so.
  3. Forgot to add- THE jam is up in Harlem at St.Nick's Pub on Mondays. I think Patience Higgins is in charge of it. THE trumpeter to watch there is Kenyatta Beasley. Smokin' !
  4. Go to Smoke uptown. They hold jams, with a lot of susrprise "pop-ins" by the well-known players. As much as I liked Smalls, their jam sessions were at times nothing more than 20 or so New School students rolling through the changes till 5 am. In recent memory the jams at the Savoy were the tops. That one's gone as well.
  5. Clem, they don't turn the room for the second set, at least not on my memory, so it can get pretty crowded for the 2nd set. Sometimes they do sell out, but it's people like Jason Moran or an occasional hired gun. I don't think there'll be a problem.

    Martial Solal

Solal is at the Village Vanguard this week. Spec.guest Lee Konitz. I'll be there.
  7. OK, I'm bailing out. It's just 2 cds, not the Roadmap to Peace issue. You guys need to get out more often. Me too. Until then...
  8. Thursday, June 5th: Khan Jamal Quintet featuring Khan Jamal - vibes, Roy Campbell - trumpet, Jemeel Moondoc - alto sax, Dylan taylor - bass, Dwight James - drums www.jazzgallery.org Let's meet, say hello, etc.
  9. He was a pianist of choice for both Mingus and Sonny Rollins in the mid to late 50s. Surprised you haven't heard of him.
  10. How often do the BS/SN cds include bonus material not on lps? I don't remember a single disk with bonuses.
  11. Here's what I would do. Get rid of this one, either sell as is or donate to charity, figure out the tax donation, see how much cash you can come up with and how much you're willing to spend. If the tranny will run $2000 rebuilt{!} that means you'll need extra work to fix what the mechanic will fuck up while installing it. Then something else'll go. Here's a 95 Mystique that sold for $2200 on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=2417208548 Half of your mileage, btw. A shot tranny at 115,000 miles is a lemon in my book. Get yourself a Camry or an Accord and be happy.
  12. Looks like all of these were issued before. No new stuff. Never mind the distribution. Why not at least establish a web-site and sell direct to public?
  13. Europe, and Orchard Park, NY. How's the used cd scene near Buffalo?
  14. I have that one on cd-r[if anyone wantsa to sell their Paul Motain -TRIBUTE TO BILL EVANS cd, please email me]. Just can't find the real thing. Great album! Frisell is also very imaginagtive and very good on Ron Miles' Woman's Day and on Wheeler-Konitz-Holland-Frisell -- Angel Song, which sometimes gets shunned for being too much of an impressionistic album. I like it. Great topic. I'll pick up a couple of the recommended Frisells.
  15. Horace Silver participated on over 50 Blue Note recordings, as a leader and a sideman. If there ever was a pianist who defined the Blue Note sound, it was him.
  16. Jamal's Argo Lps are quite plentiful and if one applies oneself one can find many pristine ones for ones pleasure.
  17. Got a letter in the mail - 4 100p. issues and accompanying cds - $40 per year. A good read? www.jazzimprov.com
  18. The April 27, 1972 Lee Morgan downbeat interview is available here - http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1yhsy/sitebui...-lee-morgan.jpg courtesy of Mike Fitzgerald and web-hosting by yours truly.
  19. Today's haul - Paul Horn Collectables 2fer Dave Bailey - One Foot In The Gutter Helen Merrill & Stan Getz - Just Friends Chico Hamilton 5tet - Reunion
  20. Jerome K. Jerome - THREE MEN IN A BOAT[to say nothing of a dog].
  21. Scott Yanow is way off-base with his 2-star AMG review. This is one of the best Lou Donaldson's soul recordings, imo. And a rare documented live gig that gives an idea what those dates *really* were about.
  22. I guess I'm getting old enough to spend a whole day sleeping under a tent. Wife says I snore though. What do you think, a good way to spend a couple of Sundays?
  23. Got 3 out of 4 this Sunday at a record fair. On Honey Dew. They look like semi-boots. With George Coleman, Wilbur Little and Hannibal Peterson on a few tracks[same combo as on Enja's 1968 live cd]. Looks like these are from an early 70s performance at the Vanguard. Haven't played 'em yet.
  24. PIANO PORTRAITS is his strongest Roulette Lp, imo. Don't know if it's on cd or not, but the material and playing are first rate[and beyond]. Blues For Left Hand Only is a virtuoso piece, if there ever was one.
