Illinois Jacquet / Leo Parker Toronto 1947
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to thirdtry's topic in New Releases
Mine arrived this morning. Just finished listening to it. Fabuloso! Illinois wins at the ballads - 'Body & soul' really gets you - until they up the tempo. 'Memories of you', too. Leo seems to win on up numbers. But they're all winners, in a sense. Uptown mislabelled some of the numbers, I'm certain; 'Robbins nest' is #9 not #8. Never mind. MG -

Indeed, Oriole - the firm Columbia bought to start CBS UK in 1963 - was renowned as the firm that manufactured Embassy Records, which was Woolworth's own label. They also issued 1962/63 Motown records. No one worried about audio fidelity on those discs, of course MG -

Yes, that was always peculiar. But there's a detached bit of Russia, isn't there? That's peculiar, too. MG -

No more Cardiganshire or Denbighshire or Monmouthshire or Glamorganshire , then? (No, I did not look them up online to find out ) BTW, what made me realize that apparently almost ANY place can be a "-shire" in the UK was when I found out there actually is a Renfrewshire up in Scotland (Renfrew being a character's name of sorts that for some reason I came across in several unrelated novels and/or radio plays through the years) Well, here are the 3 maps, in glorious technicolour This is the old map of Wales' counties, up to 1974. There were 13. The 1972 Local Government Reorganisation Act substituted 8 new counties - There was a general feeling that the counties were too big and remote from people's local concerns, so the Government had another go at it in 1994 and it's been like this since 1996 - And the present crop of Conservatives announced earlier this year that there'd be a further review. (Both previous reviews had been Conservative legislation.) MG -

Do I see John Gilmore's name on the sleeve? What's an album like that doing on Audio Fidelity? I had to ask... MG Great music, great fidelity and great muscians with a " Rikers Island " trauma. What I meant is that I always associated AFR with stuff like the Dukes of Dixieland and Louis Armstrong and others of that ilk. MG -

No - you took the same option I did; doing nothing is still a positive decision. MG indeed if only one and not in front Well, doing nothing is ALWAYS an option. If you're broke, it may be the only one. MG -

I completely agree with your assessment (I am interested in poetry, so I almost mentioned Shropshire, but I was uncertain as to whether it was a county or some other type of geographic region), but what very small percentage of the U.S. population do those Anglophiles comprise? If I asked all sixty of the college graduates with whom I work (and, yes, I realize that there are a lot of very bright people who do not have a college education as well as a lot of college graduates who are idiots) to name as many counties as they could in the United Kingdom, I doubt that I would receive more than a handful of correct answers. My geekiness re. English history and literature is showing, I think... Although I suspect that I know some of the old names for the counties, not the ones that are used currently (for the most part), and I wouldn't even come close to being able to name them all! (Not sure I could name all 50 states without a cheat sheet, for that matter.) Not many of the English names have changed as a result of local government reorganisation. Manchester and Liverpool used to be in Lancashire, but they're separate counties now. Yorkshire was divided into four but one was called Humberside - I see on one of Bev's maps that's now called the East Riding of Yorkshire - I suppose people wanted to make sure their sons could play cricket for Yorkshire (you have to be born in Yorkshire to get on the team). Tyne & Wear is a new county; so is West Midlands - those are just Newcastle and other places and Birmingham and other places; I suppose no one wanted to call them Newcastle and Birmingham Wales is where most of the names have changed twice since 1972. It's on the Edmar label, a small indie label that started in Bermuda (I have a calypso LP from '63 - Edmar 1020 - on that label with a Bermuda address) then moved to NJ. The Fields/Holmes LP which must be 67/68 is Edmar 1075, so a fair number of LPs came out in 5 years. The firm might have been owned by Eddie DeMello, who produced and wrote the sleeve for the calypso album. He was sufficiently well connected to get Michael Cuscuna (who worked for WXPN-FM, in Philly) to write the notes for the Fields LP, but what the other material on the label was I've no notion. MG -

When I had a tooth pulled a few years ago, I had the same choice - and actually, there are three choices, not two. I had my gap left as it was; obviously the cheapest option and also the least complicated. Of course, it wasn't exactly at the front; fourth from the centre. If it had been, I'd probably have taken one of your options Skeith. Price is a good way of deciding, in my view. How much you want to spend making your mouth looking OK is a very pointed question.
