Lion and Wolf were no angels in the ripping off black artists business. How did it come about that, until just before they sold the firm to Liberty, every BN artist who had a hit album left for some other label? MG

I think the popularity of their artists (i.e. Hancock, Turrentine, especially Silver) was their best investment. Those records sold well years ago and are still selling. Same for Prestige. Despite what we all say about Concord ripping through the old Fantasy catalogue, a hell of a lot is still available - I just counted sixteen Gene Ammons CDs on their site; nine by Mose Allison; and at least two dozen by Jaws. And even Ernestine Allen's one album for TruSound is still in the catalogue. If it's still there nine years after Concord bought the company, you can be sure there's enough sales in it for Concord. Same for Mildred Anderson, the one of her two Bluesville albums featuring Jaws. MG

Quite right. Contemporary, too. I don't think Fantasy bought that until the early eighties. While Contemporary was sold in the early eighties, their releases became progressively fewer and harder to obtain (especially on the East Coast) in the late '70's. Got to admit I didn't pay Contemporary much attention until about 1980, when I started getting deeper into Teddy Edwards. MG

I think you mean Johan. Think it got mistranslated as Jan over here. Just checked one of my old 17thC history text books and it definitely says Jan. There's a great name for a rock'n roll band there - Jan van Oldenbarnevelt and the Stadtholders. Though I always liked the idea of a Czech punk band calling itself The Defenestrators. Sorry Bev - there's a SCOTTISH band called the Defenestrators. They seem to get a gig or two every month. here's their website I can't do a control v.... MG
