Donner Ral Donner The girl of my best friend -
Taking a stroll around the web, I came up with this article from the Grauniad http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/sep/21/universal-emi-takeover-approved At the end, it gives what it says is a complete list of divestments. I see MPS is going, as well as a Norwegian (?) label called Jazzland. Surely this can't be the lot? So, EMI's operations in France, Spain and other places in Europe are to go, but not the wonderful stuff from their African operations? And Universal WANT TO KEEP this? They're not doing anything with their own West African material on Decca, Polydor or Philips, that I can see. Maybe, even though this is supposed to be a complete list, some stuff of interest to nerds like me - or even us - has been left out. Does anyone have better info? (Looks to me like Universal/EMI have got away with a smacked arse instead of having their testicles ripped off.) MG

Agreed. It's certainly got the Blue Note look - or should we say La Note Bleue? No room for Eiffel Towers MG -

Loadsa vinyl this morning and afternoon Richard 'Groove' Holmes - New groove/Night glider - Groove Merchant twofer Lionel Hampton - Flyin' home - Verve (UK Polydor) - somewhat more modern plane than Lunceford's - but it was 1954 Lou Donaldson - Lush life - BN (Pathe Marconi DMM) Art Blakey - The big beat - BN (Pathe Marconi DMM Mono) Gene Ammons - Blue groove - Prestige mid price (!) - previously unreleased (until 1982) recordings done on the sly at Chess in 1962. James Brown - Ain't it funky - King (Polydor) Mm, yes, it is quite funky Gene Ammons - Blue Gene - Prestige (OJC) Les McCann - Live at Montreux - Atlantic Just finished playing this - exhausted! (As usual, actually). 'Swiss movement' may be the classic session, but this one is the DEEP Les McCann. And, on side 4, halfway through 'Get yourself together' with most of Rahsaan's band on stage banging things, when Rahsaan walks on blowing like hell, my heart just overflows! MG -

Yeah, that was a little way Uptown, at 8th Ave and 50th St. (now the site of "Worldwide Plaza"), until 1968. There was an earlier site Downtown, on (surprise) Madison Square (5th Ave/Broadway and 23d St). Thank you. Thought I was going nuts there for a mo. thank you. A very interesting article, thanks. MG

I never thought the Jazz Crusaders had ANY weak members (except bass players ) But I've never bought any of Sample's own albums. Intrigued. MG

This kind of "old paper" should be pretty collectible among hardcore fans of the classic Mustangs now. Very interesting to furriners I don't get 2 things. There's no date on the document and if, as appears, it's a sales voucher of some kind, that seems odd. So, when did you get this, anyway? Before or after Donald Byrd's album came out? But, if it's a sales voucher, I can't see the point of having a little advert telling you about the optional extras that you could have had (one of which you DID have) if you hadn't bought that particular car. Sometimes things work in strange ways, though. MG
