  1. Indeed - just check the 'sexiest album covers' thread, or several other threads of that nature. Humour, too, has played a part. Funny hats, anyone? But this particular lady is neither funny nor very sexy, it seems to me. Of course YMMV. MG
  2. Well, I have to say that I got the Sun Ra box a few weeks ago and am pretty delighted. I failed to buy much Sun Ra, partly because there was so much and I was confused, partly because there was a lot of other stuff to buy. This happens. FOllowing a recent thread on Sun Ra, where Hot Ptah gave what to me was a helpful list of early stuff that seemed to fit in with what I liked anyway, I got the Real Gone box. Yes, the sleeve notes are absent. But I think that's true of most Sun Ra stuff; make of it what you will. Don't doubt the stuff has been ripped from Evidence and other CD issues, but, well those firms knew well that the material was going PD soon so I don't feel guilty. The little booklet has several pages of other releases, most of which are of no interest, but there are 3 (three) boxes each containing 8 (eight) LPs of LES BAXTER!!! (Oh, I see from AMazon UK there are now FOUR boxes!) What? Who would buy these? I mean, who really? We all know TTK likes him. I might try one, if I could find out which one has good chunks of Plas Johnson on it. I only saw one 2 CD set from EMI. Everything else was cheapo other labels. But this is the point, ain't it? To tempt the curious... MG
  3. Amazon UK Marketplace sellers do NOT subtract VAT from their prices, even for non-European buyers. They do not operate within the same set of rules that "Papa" Amazon does. And yes, based on the US shipping address that you use, any Amazon site knows that you are in the US. When you order from Amazon UK (or DE or FR) proper, VAT is automatically subtracted out from the price listed on the website. For example, if you order an item listed at 10 GBP, your price (as long as your shipping address falls outside of the European Union) would show up as 10/1.2 = 8.33 GBP. Note that VAT percentages are different on the other Amazon Euro sites. Marketplace sellers in the UK are considered to be selling second hand goods, even if they're in 'new' condition, and there can be no VAT on second hand goods because there is no value added in them. MG Not quite true. Under certain conditions VAT is payable on second-hand goods in the European Union. So where's the value added? MG The fact that stuff is being traded is seen as added value; labour is invested. Not my idea, but those are the rules. I changed my post, too MG

  5. Oh yes - wasn't it you who put 'My ship' on a BFT? I first heard George on 'Groove' with Les McCann, Groove Holmes & Ben Webster. Later with Ammons and McGriff. He popped up in lots of odd places on my map Nice vinyl day today. Jaws - Hey Lock! - Roost (Vogue Pye UK) Sonny Clark - Leapin' & lopin' - BN (Pathe Marconi) Don Patterson - Why not - Muse Lou Donaldson - Sunny side up - BN (King Japan) Lonnie Smith - Keep on loving - GM MG

  7. Interesting. I knew Saul/Paul was a Farisee and proud of it; and a member of the ruling classes; and a Roman Citizen not above pulling rank when accused of sedition. All that stuff in his writings about 'being a new creature' was hype, because you can see that he remained what he was; someone who really thought that the Government should be obeyed, that slaves should obey their masters, and hadn't much conception of what people (even now) had/have to do to get by. MG I think the reality of Paul is WAY more complicated than what you suggest, but that's what makes him such an interesting figure. I'm sure. The point of my post was to expose how little I did know. Finished the Musketeers series today. Been a LOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG and good read Now starting to reread Harry Turtledove's World War series, because I've just got a recent addition, tacked on to the end. Another long read. MG
  8. Wow. That's good to know. Thanks for the tip. That looks interesting. Thanks. MG
  9. I was an Eagle kid. I liked PC49 - I seem to remember that, perhaps in an annual - PC49 introduced me to cockney rhyming slang (I lived in Leeds in those days). Tommy Walls, too - a cartoon ad for Walls' ice cream. MG
  10. Krall's photo isn't a patch on Johnson's girls. Photographers of lightly clad ladies back in the day had a better eye for line - even for Betty Grable's legs. MG
  11. Sounds crazy I know - but it really does make a difference with the LP12 Linn standard mat (which is still the best for this turntable IMO). Once you determine the 'correct' side it is worth making a small chalk mark as a reminder of which side is the correct one. What's the harm of a big chalk mark saying 'THIS SIDE DOWN'? MG
  12. I kind of suspect working men's clubs go for this a bit. Maybe I'll take the opportunity to have lunch in the Tonyrefail Working Men's Club, or the Coed Ely Miners' Institute someday and let you know what the background music was. MG Which reminds me, having a cuppa the other day at Hayes Island Snack Bar, opposite St David's Hall, I saw that Marty Wilde, John Leyton and Eden Kane (how on earth can any one hit wonder remain memorable after fifty years?) are touring. And there's another package with some old early sixties pop bands coming to Cardiff, too. And a Motown tribute tour - the poster had all the names of these dead people all over it. Yes, there's plenty of grey money about. MG
  13. £1-99 !!!!!!!!! Good grief!!!!! And Beano doing well at 38,000 circulation? Well, in the end, kids have found other stuff to do. It's like the death of jazz. MG
  14. Vonski Got this second hand in '76. "Hey! That's George Freeman's brother! Must get it." I wonder how many people got to Von through George? MG
  15. It's nearly all gaps now. How is George? RIP Von. MG
  16. The only piano recording I know of (off the top of my head) is 'Cha cha J' on the TOCJ Jimmy Smith trio + LD (Lou Donaldson). MG
  17. I almost certainly won't notice that MG
  18. There's nothing else there that I want, actually, unless they issue the Ambrose Campbell, so I'll go for Amazon. Thanks. MG PS Hey! How come the regular Amazon price is £17-77? MG
  19. Wonderful session!!! So is vol 2, 'Centerpiece at the Kosei Nenkin' Reading the Vocalion thread about British reissues put me in mind to play this, by some old friends from the Sussex jazz scene Benny Simkins - Linger awhile - Flyright then Ernest Franklin - Nobody but you, Lord/Sermonette - Jewel Sermonette is the Adderley Brothers song. MG
  20. The forthcoming Vocalions? Watch out for them appearing on hmv.com, which usually (though not always) has dirt-cheap preorder prices. Once the release date has passed they go up to RRP. But if you mean the Hawkins -- it's £2.99 at Vocalion -- how cheap do you want it? Yes, I mean the Hawkins; there was some issue mentioned in the thread about postal charges. MG
  21. I live in the rainiest part of the UK MG suit yourself. a decent TT mat is going to easily cost you half as much as this. what's another $20 in the grand scheme of the Vinyl hobby. buy one less record next time you are at the shop and it is covered. Yes, you're right, but they don't sell 'em over here. So a cork mat looks like the best bet. MG
