Prompted by the Shelby Singleton RIP thread, I've dug out Sil Austin - Honey sax - SSS International (Polydor UK) kinda lush string-filled versions of pop tunes, but Sil's sound is ravishing. next Mongo Santamaria - Soul bag - Columbia (CBS UK) MG

He had an R&B label in the late sixties, too: SSSInternational. Johnny Adams had several hits on that label. Also Peggy Scott & Jojo Benson were very successful as well. I've got one LP on the label by Sil Austin - lots of strings on contemporary pop songs, like a less talented version of Stanley's "The look of love" but Sil's sound is ravishing. MG

I'm on a Lightnin' Slim kick. Got "Rooster blues" on LP years ago and recently decided to get into the compilations Ace has been issuing over here. Terrific stuff. Not extraordinary, but very down home, very straight blues. I like those Jay Miller guys - Slim Harpo, Lonesome Sundown, Lightnin' Slim. Going to get into Lazy Lester next. MG

I really love Winard Harper's albums on Epicure & Savant. Have them all. Very interesting band, very interesting approach, incorporating some Senegalese ideas (and a Senegalese drummer) into modern hard bop. Only have "Artistry" with his brother (and Houston Person's "Why not" on Muse, which is where I heard them first). MG

Gunther Gretz' label POpular African Music didn't reissue the Keletigui & se Tambourinis album, it turns out. But he does sell the CD reissued by Bolibana retail. So I've got it now. He also had this one in stock, so I sprang for it, too. Both albums are superb. And I think Graeme Council excluded all the tracks from them from his Sterns compilation I referred to earlier (which I haven't got yet). The Bolibana CDs are pretty expensive from Gunther Gretz - 17 euro each and the postage (to UK) is 3 euro for up to 3cds. But, oh boy, they're worth it! I'd go with Arthur Prysock's "Rainy night in Georgia" - the best version is, of course, by Lord Tanamo, as I'm sure all will agree Take five - I love Tito Puente's version of this (from "Mambo Diablo") Some difficult ones though... Is Bobby Bland's version of "Black night" better than Charles Brown's? - ah, well... and which version of "Ain't it funky now" is second best - James Brown's or Grant Green's? That one depends on my mood, too. MG

Back from North Wales yesterday and found, waiting in the hall: Very nice (and cheap!) compilation of ABC material, very little of which I've got already. But doesn't include "Worried life blues". Still... Also, two from Gunther Gretz: I thought Gunther had issued this on Popular African Music, but it's an old issue on Bolibana, as it turns out. He also had this one in stock, so I sprang for it, too. Both were quite expensive, but they're both fabulous albums. And none of the tracks (I think) are included in the recent Sterns compilation of Keletigui & co, which is highly admirable! MG

I like the drum machines in Guinean music a lot. But one's mileage very definitely varies on that - Mike Weil HATES them in Guinean music. And I can see why. I just don't agree. MG

Lightnin' Slim - It's mighty crazy - Excello (Ace) I've had his "Rooster blues" LP for years but it's only recently that I started exploring his material on Ace CDs. This is the third one I've got in recent months. He's really very good indeed. MG

Those Adams/Pullen titles surprise me. Have I missed something? I know both musicians worked in the Soul Jazz area earlier in their careers, but thought that they were making stuff that verged from Hard Bop to Avant when they got together. MG
