What vinyl are you spinning right now??
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Thanks WB3. I had two versions of this on LP - Cobblestone and Muse. But on one the balance was skewed to one channel (Larry Young) and on the other skewed to the other channel (GG). The 32Jazz CD is OK for balance, though. Very strange. This afternoon Don Patterson - These are soulful days - Muse George Freeman - Frantic diagnosis - Bamboo Wynton Kelly - Full view - Milestone MG -
Was there ever a Buddy Johnson Classics from after 1950-51? (1244) MG

Knowing how you approach this stuff, Allen, this sounds like a worthwhile project. Just don't do yourself in. A few suggestions: GEORGE FREEMANNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Calvin Newborn Paul Weeden Barthelemey Attiso (of Orchestre Baobab) Billy Butler Boogaloo Joe Jones GEORGE FREEMANNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Melvin Sparks Thornel Schwartz Bill Jennings Floyd Smith Al Casey GEORGE FREEMANNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Link Wray Bucky Pizzarelli Sekou Bembeya Diabate (of Bembeya Jazz National) Keletigui Diabate (Orchestre National "A" de la Republique de Mali) Roy Gaines GEORGE FREEMANNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you HAVE to put in Duane Eddy, make sure you use either "Stalkin'" or "Peter Gunn". MG

What on earth is going on at Concord NOW???
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
A late comment. The Wild Bill Moore, "Bottom groove" hasn't been out on OJC before. It came out as part of a Milestone twofer, with Moore's other Jazzland LP, "Wild Bill's beat". "Bottom groove" is less of a honking album - but the other doesn't have much honking anyway. It features Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Joe Benjamin, Ben Riley & Ray Baretto. I think this was Keepnews' attempt to make a couple of Prestige albums MG -

Wow! Never heard of any of these, or even the label. When was it done? MG I've written more about Pitchford here. If you don't won't to read the whole thing, skip to the last two paragraphs for what little I know about this record. A very nice piece, Jeff. Thanks. And there I was thinking this was sixties stuff now playing Freddie Hubbard - Classics - Fantasy The right stuff when you want some hard hard bop - not often for me. MG -
Yes, now I've checked the old Fantasy catalogue, I can see it was issued. Must try to find a copy of that one. MG

Latest Japanese Re-issues from Hiroshi
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Head Man's topic in Re-issues
Hey, that one has never been on CD before! Excellent news! Now, if the other Spencer they put out would have been Where I'm Coming From instead of Louisiana Slim it would have been even better. Louisiana Slim was on the Legends Of Acid Jazz twofer, whereas Where I'm Coming From also never has been on CD (although it is "available" on a blog). If this means the Japanese will put out more Prestige albums never on CD before in the future, I'm all for that. There are still many Fantasy never got around too, and I'm not counting on Con F. Cord to reissue them. Indeed! I just posted a list of Fantasy stuff that hadn't made it to CD on the Concord deletions thread. This lot is interesting, too November 19, 2009 UCCO 9891 Ammons,Gene(ts)/Brasswind UCCO 9892 Funk Inc./Priced To Sell UCCO 9893 Hawes,Hampton(p)/Northern Windows UCCO 9894 Bartz,Gary(as)/Shadow Do UCCO 9895 Lawrence,Azar(ts,ss)/Summer Solstice UCCO 9896 Rushen,Patrice(key)/Before The Dawn UCCO 9897 Lawrence,Azar(ts,ss)/People Moving UCCO 9898 Rushen,Patrice(key)/Shout It Out UCCO 9899 Summers,Bill(perc)/Feel The Heat UCCO 9900 Newman,David(ts)/Keep The Dream Alive I don't have many of them. Got to say, the Ammons and (particularly) the Funk Inc aren't much good. The Newman I'll get because I like it, but most won't. But what about all the others? Anyone know? Also, tremendously pleased to see that Grant Green's "Visions" is out on CD now. More business for Hiroshi, I feel. MG -

My next two African purchases will be Keletigui & ses Tambourinis was one of the greatest of the Mandinke big bands of Guinea Conakry and made the first album to be issued on the Syliphone label. Keletigui Traore, a sax player who led the band, was one of the musicians who formed the first Mandinke big band, Syli Orchestre National, in 1959. Keletigui et ses Tambourinis was created in the early sixties, having originally been called “Orchestre de la Pailotte”, which was formed from “L’Orchestre de la Bonne Auberge” and “La Formation Kerfala Camara Tamborini”. (This was some time before Bembeya Jazz became a National band. Keletigui (who died last November) was one of the most important musicians in Guinea. The band continues, even after Keletigui's death, to play at "La Pailotte". The Sterns album (issued in Britain in July and almost certainly in Europe soon after) is a 2 CD compilation similar to the three Syliphone compilations Sterns have already issued: Authenticite Bembeya Jazz National - The Syliphone years Balla & ses Balladins - The Syliphone years All have copious and very well researched and informed sleeve notes by Graeme Counsel, an Aussie DJ who has been given the highest civilian award by the government of Guinea for his work in researching these recordings. And the music! Well, I've got to say that I don't know yet Graeme has - wonderfully - selected 32 tracks of which I have only three (I think) on the two Keletigui albums I've got. But this was a great band, there's no doubt about it. The other LP (if I can find it) will be This was the first LP made by Keletigui's band under their new name. Earlier recordings were made as Orchestre de la Pailotte. Graeme reviewd this LP on his Radio Africa site and recently added a note to say that it was being reissued on CD by Gunther Gretz on Popular African Music. He also put a link there to buy it but I've tried it and it takes me to some general German site and I can't find Gretz' stuff. I've e-mailed him to ask how to get the CD, which isn't on Amazon UK, and, when I find out, I'll post details. Graeme didn't include any of this album in the 2CD Sterns compilation. This is a wonderful band and, if you like this kind of stuff, it's pretty well as good as it gets. MG

Nope. Apart from South African Township jazz (which is rather different to all other kinds of African music), I've almost nothing from any of the Bantu-speaking nations. They've always struck me as being insufficiently rhythmically complex. But that may just be the ubiquitous influence of Congolese Rhumba throughout those countries. MG

I didn't know they leased stuff from other west coast labels. I thought everything they put out was their own stuff. Another interesting question, which might verge on the personal, is that Lester Bihari - one of the brothers' sons? I'm not sure - went off to Memphis and started the Meteor label in 1952. It's always seemed odd to me that, with a successful family business going on, Lester should have gone off and started Meteor - making R&B & gospel music, too, as well as C&W. Was there some kind of family argument? If you ask about the number of people employed, Chewy, you might ask what they were doing - how many manufacturing records, how many on sales and distribution, how many on collecting money and so on. As Jim said, this stuff has never been documented for any record company - not even Blue Note or Prestige. MG -
I only ever noticed what crummy records the group made. Never interested enough to wonder why. Just poor pop music. MG I strongly disagree. California Dreaming is one of the classics of pop music as far as I'm concerned. You may well be right. Growing up in the early fifties with such ubiquitous delights as "How much is that doggie in the window", "Music, music, music", "Sugarbush" and "Bimbo" (not what you think) turned me right off pop music for life. Well, until I realised that black pop music was proper stuff. MG
