Let me second(or third) the comments about the John Kirby group!!! Wonderful, wonderful music! It's be too long since I played any, but I believe Charlie only plays muted trumpet on the recordings??? He played for quite some time with Tommy Dorsey, about the only African-American in his band, IIRC. The now out of print cd, Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra-The Post War Era, mentions how they had to do around 20 takes of "The Hucklebuck" since Charlie was having a terrible time singing a stretched out Sacroiliac!!! I've never heard anything of the John Kirby band, though I've always heard how good the band was. Anyone got some recommendations for currently available stuff? MG MG, it is always shocking to me to see how many cds I own that have gone out of print since I bought them! Since I see none of the ones I own in print on amazon(At least the U.S. version) here is one that sounds pretty darn good, with 2 very positive reviews. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Columbia-RC...s/dp/B00004Z55U Oh, if you haven't heard much of the young Maxine Sullivan , you are in for a pleasant surprise there as well! Thanks Berigan - I knew I could rely on you! And I couldn't resist the price - Amazon.com is half the price of Amazon.co.uk, even with extra postage! I haven't heard much Maxine - I have 2 cuts from 1944 on a compilation that's mostly Una Mae Carlisle. Actually, not too impressive compared to UMC and Savannah (who's also present). MG

I dare say he's a relative, or avatar of Deadric Malone. MG -
Your next Mosaic set

Does the same for Dusty Groove... MG -
Wow! These are Roogalator jackets by FCUK! http://www.solisstyle.com/solishop/product...roducts_id/1453 I just did a google and found them. Bobby Jameson made a single by the title "Gotta find my roogalator" in June 1966, 3 months AFTER Jimmy Smith's "Got my mojo working" came out! Personnel was quite interesting Gotta Find My Roogalator (R. P. Jameson) 2:30 H & R Studios, LA June 21, 1966 Produced by Norm Ratner Arranged by FZ Bobby Jameson--vocals Louis Morell--guitar Robert West--guitar, bass Carol Kaye--guitar Lawrence Knechtel--piano Gene Estes--drums, tympani John Guerin--drums It was issued on Penthouse 503 Jackie Mittoo and the Soul Brothers did a recording of Smith's arrangement but called it (and sang it) "Got my boogaloo working". This was probably in 1966/67 - the Soul Brothers were replaced by the Soul Vendors in 1967. I think Jimmy Smith invented it. And hell, you bleedin' well KNOW what it is! MG

Your next Mosaic set

I don't think I'm going to get a Mosaic set this year; disappointed that the sale didn't include anything off boxes. I generally only buy in their sales. MG -

Hank Crawford - what's happened to him?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Artists
He was fine when I saw him with David Newman and Calvin Newborn in the early '80s and with McGriff and Bobby Broom in the late '80s. And his last album, "The world of Hank Crawford" was one of his best. Oh. MG -

Postman just brought these Two of my favourite Lou Donaldson Cadets. This is the last Etta Jones OJC I haven't got (wipes brow). Looking forward to hearing Oliver Nelson's string arrangements. MG -
Hank Crawford - what's happened to him?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Artists
I'm very sorry to hear that. But thanks. MG -
Does anyone know what Hank Crawford is up to? He hasn't made an album since 2000. I've googled him, in the hopes of finding some site with a list of gigs he's doing, without success. AMG doesn't say he is dead, so I guess he could be alive, but inactive. Perhaps he's retired. Perhaps he's ill. MG

I take it that, even with two big houses (and a barn) on it, this is a high price for NY state. MG -
Up, to note that the "House warming" session is being issued on CD in Japan on 26 September. ABCJ 431 Ammons,Gene(ts)/Baby Sax 2500 Howard McGhee (tp) Gene Ammons (ts) Jake Fisher (g) Barney Richmond (b) Willie Mashburn (d) Waco (bgo) Chicago, IL, circa May, 1962 House Warmin' Jivin' Around Nothing But Soul (Jazz With A Beat) Jug And McGhee (Muggin' McGhee) This is one of my favourite Ammons sessions. If you haven't got it, get it!!!! MG

Intrigued by that item Any idea what's on it? Hiroshi reports that the session with Howard McGhee - "House warmin'" - is included. I don't know if there are additional tracks. Anyone who hasn't got this session on LP should get the CD - it's one of Jug's finest. MG Just received confirmation from Hiroshi - this CD is only the "House warming" session; there are no extra tracks. Is this the first time this has been issued on CD? MG

Personally I find the American version much funnier/better than the British verson... I have a very strong feeling that "The office" wasn't originally supposed to be funny, in the sense of a sitcom, ie played for laughs. Mostly, it's too true to life to be anything but very pointed satire. MG
-
And "The fall and rise of Reginald Perrin", "Rising damp" and, though it's probably impenetrable to most Americans, "Phoenix nights". MG
