  1. I like "The Latin bit" - and since it's Grant Green's birthday today, I have to say GG LIVES! But the way he just plays the tune of "Besame mucho" is so wonderful - totally himself, even though he's doing hardly anything to the tune itself - just the occasional bent note that hits you in the stomach... MG
  2. I've got that on LP - what does "tubey sounding" mean. Should I get the RVG? MG
  3. Perfect! MG Oh no! Where are the five rings? They must have gone down the drain first!
  4. Thanks folks. I have a home & contents insurance but the value of the contents didn't include anything for the records. But I recently realised that the probable value of the collection is about equal to what I've got under contents. The advert quoted in the other thread is interesting. I wonder if anyone does it in Britain? Or if an American firm would accept a British risk. MG
  5. I thought, "this can't be Chewy, beacause their aren't any spelling mistakes." Then I got to the last line. MG
  6. Sticking to aviation, for a minute... Damn good album, too! MG
  7. 24th and Broadway. I know that traffic island. That white car on the right is turning off 24th. I went there on my first visit to New York. Unfortunately, there was no beautiful girl... MG You must have been there in the middle of the night, in the dead of Winter... Well, actually, I meant walking along pretending to be elegantly overbalancing. The middle of the night would have been a good time to see some girls, but not in the same way, of course. MG
  8. John's got a good point that's been obscured in this thread. It's neccessary for all musicians to find an audience. The easiest way is to play the (contemporary) music of your own community to members of your own community. Doing anything else is harder. And the question of authenticity inevitably arises. And gets you comments such as SoulStream has been experiencing. But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. MG
  9. There's a sense in which I feel that it's unnecessary for a great blues player to be inventive. How inventive would you say Mance is, compared to, say, Muddy Waters or B B King? MG
  10. I like it. It tends to get 'panned' quite a bit around these parts and there's nothing earth-shattering on there but this is a good, swinging Liberty-era Blue Note set. Of course, Foster remains a very under-rated man on the tenor. I REALLY wanted to like "Manhattan fever". I bought it when it came out, flogged it and bought it again a couple of years later. But I just couldn't get with it. Anyway, Frank had a good enough contribution from me. MG
  11. Have been interested in this one, which tunes, how is the recording quality?? Dr. Jeff This was a live date, recorded January 28, 1974 in Bologna. Criss and the Arvanitas trio play: - Tin Tin Deo - Lover Man - Sonny's Blues - Summertime - Willow Weep For Me - Sunny - Hooti's Blues - Untitled Blues Sound is very acceptable though a bit shrill. I'd agree on the sound. It's better than Lou "Donaldson in Bologna" a decade later. I didn't know the CD had a couple of extra tracks. The LP is pretty long - about 49 minutes. What are the bonus tracks like? Up to the same standard as the others? MG

  13. Lew did some really exciting playing with Earland. MG
  14. Thank you Guy. What a lovely read! MG
  15. And what could possibly be better? Kenny Burrell, Midnight Blue Grant Green, Idle Moments Hmmm...how late into "late night" are we going here. who are we going there with, and what's on the itenerary? When "Jean De Fleur" comes on, I'm thinking it's either time to call a cab or time to make breakfast... Precisely. Or put on "I hear voices". MG
  16. My wife wants to show various friends I can't see how, but I'm sure there must be a way of saving a U-tube video to my hard drive. Anyone got any ideas? MG
  17. Wow! I'll show that to my wife later. She's going to Kruger for about 6 weeks in September. MG
  18. Erskine May Erskine Hawkins Coleman Hawkins
  19. So do I! (It's my age y'know; I need reminding about things I like!) MG
