Clearly, that makes everything worse, but Yeltsin wasn't responsible for what had been going in since the days of Brezhnev. And with a more gradual transition from a totally command economy to a free market, there would have been more time to develop new habits. MG Agreed. Guy Maybe, but considering the overwhelming corruption in Soviet Regime and the fact that all the post Soviet leaders came from PCUS' nomeklatura, I doubt it. Anyway Yeltsin could have been a better leader, the point is if the other members of the CC would allow him, as it happened with the coup against Gorbachev. Good point. MG

Thanks very much Ep1; it's clear that I was wrong. I was looking, as you sensed, at a pretty small sample of music directly from Southern Africa (as opposed to recordings made elsewhere, aimed at different markets); generally, it's been Lucky Dube, Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, The Soul Brothers and Miriam Makeba - with the occasional piece by the Manhattan Brothers. I think he was probably a good leader - certainly good at rousing up the people to get rid of Gorbie, who didn't know what to do with what he'd started. Trouble was, no one else did, either. And Yeltsin allowed himself to be persuaded to get in very right wing economists (the only kind that were in fashion in those Thatcherite days) to advise on what to do. That was the worst possible way to go about converting the former Soviet economy. No doubt, however, he was under big pressure from the arm of the US Government known as the World Bank, as well as the US and British Governments themselves. So I think that the tragedy that the last 18 years has been for Russia couldn't have been avoided by any kind of leader (except perhaps a Stalin). MG

Virgil is probably still around. Last I heard him was on Teddy Edwards' album "Midnight creeper" in 1997. So he didn't disappear in the '70s. MG

You're right - Sonny had no personal problem letting other musicians solo. And they're good pianists: mainly Jimmy Jones & Hank Jones, but also Dolo Coker and Harold Mabern. But the sessions were designed as showcases for Sonny for commercial reasons, so I blame the producer. I think it was mostly Teddy Reig. I really like the set, though I'm still not really into discs 4,5 & 6 yet - left them until last. And those are all with the Joneses. MG I like the set but in reality there is a high level of sameness to much of the material. None is bad and I do like Stitt but perhaps I should of stuck with the Verve LPRs I have. These offer similar material in a smaller lower calorie package. Yes that's true. I recall a post in which Jim Sangrey said something like, "Hell Sonny, why do you keep on making the same album!" That's what would have kept me from this set. I only bought it because of the LP with Don Patterson that's included in it. But once I got it, I'm enjoying it a lot. MG
