  2. How about Untitled? The Stroker sounds kinda...kinky. As does Uncle Rough. How the hell can you mention those, and neglect to mention "Mr. Johnson"? Thought about it, but you know, too much of a good thing... For that matter "Claw-til-da" has always had a rather "visceral" sound to me. But I like fingernails, what can I say... So why don't we call it Lee Morgan - Sex? And include a remix of "The Rumproller" retitled "The Azz Tappa" just to seal the deal? Lee Morgan minus sex don't seem right to me. MG
  3. Burroughs isn't entirely wrong - just entirely one-sided. So, from over here: Thank you for Louis Armstrong for Duke for Bird for Trane for Grant Green for John Patton for Fred Jackson for Willis Jackson for Martin Luther King for Rev C L Franklin for Aretha for Ray for Ambrose Bierce for Isaac Asimov for Kurt Vonnegut for Jack Vance for T-Bone for B B for the Freeman Brothers for Harry Turtledove for John Kenneth Galbraith and several million others. 5. How about Untitled? The Stroker sounds kinda...kinky. As does Uncle Rough. Although, if you put that French domanatrix on the cover... Seriously, Free Flow sounds like a title that might have made to the streets it during that time, especially since it's the leadoff tune. Uncle Rough by Auntie Rough, eh? MG PA - no seriously it's probably the funkiest album Lee made. Most of his albums that I've heard only have one funky track. This has lots! That's why I like "Uncle Rough".
  6. You'll like this Jim. It's a seal of approval from a Japanese mag called "Soul Jazz". MG
  7. DOes it fix this? 'COs that's my problem. MG
  8. I bet you the discount will increase to 50% off this Thursday (will Tower be open on Thanksgiving now that it is being run by Great American?) or Friday. Keep your ears open (I am sure that it will be reported here on this board if it does increase), and try visiting Tower next Monday night (unless you enjoy braving the shopping crowds on Thanksgiving weekend.) The Tower in Atlanta will be open 11 to 7 or 1 to 7 Thanksgiving. Having worked in retail for many a year, I REALLY don't like the idea of stores being open on turkey day. You get paid shit, work crappy hours, week-ends, and now you are supposed to work on a day nearly everyone else is off as well?? Join a union, young man! Work to reduce the exploitation of the working class by the fat cat Republicans! MG

  10. Fifty cents! That's even less than I paid for Baba Maal's "Nomad soul". I was rooting around the back of a record shop in Senegal and the proprietor came back brandishing this album. "You must buy this! It was specially made for white people!" "Oh no, I don't want anything like that," I said. He kept insisting; I kept insisting. He kept lowering the price and eventually I bought it for about 30p. It's fuckin' awful! MG
  11. Yes, I agree - I think I have almost all the Mosaic in other sets. And they're both among my all-time most played albums of any kind. MG
  12. Buy two copies of this! MG
  13. I wondered about that e-mail. We have here a firm that makes its living by issuing limited editions. As far as I know, each set only has 5,000 copies. So a more popular set will sell out more quickly than an unpopular one. My guess is that the list includes the ones that Mosaic needs most urgently to sell. That would seem to indicate that they're the slowest selling ones; the least popular. Am I too cynical? MG
  14. To Lon and Chewy - best wishes from someone who doesn't know when Thanksgiving is (and has only a vague idea that it was something to do with the Pilgrim Travelers (sorry, Fathers)). MG
  15. Here's a serious question (well, almost) for a funny thread. I was just listening to Lee Morgan's CD of "Sonic boom". In addition to that LP, the CD also includes a session which was originally issued as the other session on Lee's "Procrastinator" double LP. This session has never had a title. I like to think of it as "Uncle Rough" the title of one of the Harold Mabern tunes. Anyone got any suggestions about what they feel this session should be called? Here's a list of the tunes. Free flow Stormy weather Mr Johnson The stroker Uncle Rough Claw-til-da Untitled boogaloo MG
  16. "Bop rascal" Bill's first on Savant is mainly a guitar/organ/drums trio, with tambourine added on 1 track/ Perry Hughes is the guitarist, Randy Gelispie the drummer (longtime sideman of Gene Ludwig). Very HI Q stuff. MG
  17. Now THAT'S right. I wasn't too happy with what you were saying earlier Jim, about what Parker actually DID when he played. I'm sure as a musician that's important to you, but to me it was a means to an end. What you've just said now, is the end. Thanks. MG
  18. Talk about people who don’t like to listen to music recorded “pre-hifi” as being in search of “entertainment” rather than music doesn’t seem right to me. It reminded me of a colleague in the ‘60s, who was an audio engineer and a hifi fanatic, and who described himself as a jazz fan, who once remarked to me that he’d never buy an LP with six tracks per side. I really don’t know what these people are looking for, but it certainly doesn’t seem like entertainment to me. MG
  19. It's because of the disconnect between title and song. You need a mnemonic. I can only remember the title of ornithology because I wanna take a ride in a taxi I wanna go downtown and pick up a Bird MG

  23. I expect it's a matter of personal priorities with most people. We neither have unlimited resources nor unlimited time to listen to music. So it's necessary to prioritise. And there's so much that one does want really urgently! Apart from a handful of albums (altogether) by Armstrong and Bechet and a few big bands like Buddy Johnson's or Erskine Hawkns, it's only in the last few months that I've begun (after 46 years!) to explore the music from before WW2, as you'll have noticed. But I started with singing preachers anyway, not the New Orleans people or the big bands, which I've only just got round to in the last few weeks. But I'm very comfortable with that situation. Sure, there are big gaps in my collection but, so what (be-doo be-doo be-doo dah doo-dah)? Oh, and to the point of the thread, I do have 2 Parker albums; "Bird symbols" and "Live at Rockland Palace".
