Houston Person - Live In Paris
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in New Releases
AH!!! I've been wondering when he'd bring out a new album. Oh, and Willie Jones III !!! Thanks for posting. MG PS Anyone know where this is available for download? -
If you're after specifically JAZZ material, then Tribute to Henry Sithole (RCA) will fit the bill. But if you want a bit of soul jazz, then it's Slow drive to Soweto (Atlas City) Let it be me is the cut I put on the BFT. I see you can't get either on Discogs... Oh well. MG

I don't seem to have any trouble uploading images from my computer. I've quite a few albums that aren't on the web so I do it frequently. I don't drop & drag them; just use the choose files option. MG -

This evening MJQ - Space - Apple 1969 Erskine Hawkins - Vol 3 - RCA Victor Now, my newie Zani DIabate & Super Djata Band - Oubien 1991 MG -
I have four albums of The Drive. They're very, very good at their best, which is frequent enough. And at least moderate at their worst. I put one of their track on a BFT and it fooled everyone I think... MG MG

What music did you buy today?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to tonym's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, they were originally issued as K7s. The guy I used to get them from back in the nineties, has ripped his favourite stuff to CDR and is flogging it at £10 a go. I'm getting them cheaper because I only want downloads as I've no more room for CDs or LPs. It's easier to get them from him than to rip my own K7s. Today's newie is one I didn't get back in the day Zani Diabate & the Super Djata Band - Ni Zani mani - Oubien Productions 1991 MG Bloomin' brilliant! I could have been listening to this for thirty years if I'd been on the ball! -
Vanguard R&B / Jazz intersection
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Miscellaneous Music
James Moody was a big influence on Hank Crawford. I've been getting into a good bit of his Argo/Cadet material this year and it's fine but, in my view, it ain't anything like a vanguard. MG -

Yeah. And Rufus is pretty photogenic; not handsome, but photographs well. It's personality that does it. MG -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??

You sure been playing a lot of great albums in the last few days. MG -
It's not that I don't like them. I DO like those early recordings very much. But they were doing something different. The Kenny Clarke band was four jazz musicians with four palettes to play with. Connie had about seventy-four palettes just by himself. John Lewis' concept for the MJQ could only work with someone painting with such a variety of sounds. MG

YES! But even MORE yes to Connie Kay. The MJQ couldn't (and didn't) work with a different drummer. The MJQ was just a jazz band with Kenny Clarke. With Connie, who was the one pushing pictures into your brain, it became something there's never otherwise been. The greatest R&B drummer ever. MG

I've got loads of multiple copies. K7 and LP issues I haven't sold when I've upgraded to CD for decades. And lately I've been getting downloads of lots of material I've already got on K7 and LP to save me the trouble of ripping them. Ripping CDs is no trouble, of course. 93.8% of my collection is on my hard drive now. I only listen to physical copies when I'm ripping them. My laptop's tinny sound is the best I've ever heard for music. MG

That was Gator's greatest band. Pat Martino was the other member. Between them, they had a great big sound. No bad records were made. MG

First physical album I've bought in quite a while, but you can't get it as a DL Osdalgia Lesmes - Sones y pasiones - Mimisma Productions I got her previous live album off a blog and she was so great, I spent 19 quid (including postage) to get this. And it's as brilliant as Osdalgia Contigo Live. This is live, too, in Yerba Buena, Puerto Rico. And my GOD!!!! The price has risen to 47.18 GBP + post since I ordered it! Damn lucky hit that was. Bought mine new in '68 (licks thumb & wipes on shirt). MG I thought it was unwontedly artificial. Its redeeming feature, for me, is that Roland Prince wasn't obeying the photographer's orders. MG
