A Double Murderer Will Not Walk The Streets Soon
Ken Dryden replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Obviously, this judge, prosecutor and jury were a lot brighter than the bozos that handled Simpson's murder trial... -
LF/ Locksmith Blues R Holloway C Terry Cd
Ken Dryden replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...

Racist lyrics in Mercer set?
Ken Dryden replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I guess no one better play "Darktown Strutter's Ball" as well...sigh... -
No, I think that all of the material issued in the 9 CD series is present in the 10 CD box. But it does have those pain-in-the-ass carboard sleeves instead of jewel boxes to hold the CDs. One other oddity, the DVD only plays on my computer, not in my DVD players. I guess this was to avoid having to format it to work in both Europe and the U.S. I am checking my 9 Tatum CDs before selling them, just to be sure.

Live365 Smööööth Jazz Charts
Ken Dryden replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
It's hard to take smooth jazz seriously, especially with all of the insipid cover photos of artists looking like total geeks. -
This CD hits me as bland. Ogerman on a "favorite Michael Franks album"? I can't stand his drippy vocals or inane lyrics... I gag every time I've heard "Popsicle Toes" thankfully, it hasn't been on the radio around here in some time.

And they wrapped the session with "Take Out."

Storyville just sent me a 10 CD box of live Art Tatum: Tatum Art. It evidently consists of the series of nine individual CDs issued earlier, plus 21 previously unavailable tracks and a bonus DVD with the stuff from The Fabulous Dorseys, the film clip of "Tiny's Exercise" and his solo of "Yesterdays" from the Spike Jones Show, minus Spike and the City Slickers, of course.

I'm sure Allen knows that Desmond later wrote a piece called Take Ten (also the title of the album on which it appeared). The Bernstein estate is evidently holding up the reissue of the Brubeck/Bernstein collaboration.

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
Ken Dryden replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Isn't it 'Invaders From Mars,' the B&W film with the spaceship drilling into the land behind the house and everyone keeps falling into the hole and having an operation to implant a device to control them? Anyone ever see the rotten film on Hitler with Richard Basehart in the title role? What a turkey... -
Both CDs are SOLD. Thanks.

Live365 Smööööth Jazz Charts
Ken Dryden replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I bet Live365 Smooth Jazz Radio will gobble up this CD: Details can be found at: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=28869 -
I'm also open to trades, but I would prefer they also be imports vs. common domestic stuff that I likely already own.

LF / Warren Vache 2GETHER CD
Ken Dryden replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
There are a number of copies of 2Gether at half.com, though at higher prices than you might desire. -
PM sent on Christensen, Rathbun/Colligan and xxxRomano CDs. Never mind on the Romano, I spotted a copy on my shelf...

Forget Stupendous, Now Everything is Priced to Move!
Ken Dryden replied to Dan Gould's topic in Offering and Looking For...
There are quite a few CDs that have been listed at rather cheap prices in spite of being out of print for quite awhile. An example was Sphere: Bird Songs, which lists when it appears on line for $50-$75 typically. There have to be a number of other bargains remaining, though I pretty much have what I need from this list. -
I screwed up on a recent order, so I have two duplicates: Harold Danko: This Isn't Maybe (solo piano) factory sealed Duke Jordan Trio: Live in Japan Vol. 1 (opened and played a bit but it's part of a 2 CD set I already own). $12 for the Danko, $10 for the Jordan + 1st class shipping ($1.68 for 1, $2 for both) Will ship to the U.S. only Paypal is acceptable payment PM me if interested

Value of downloaded music = $0.00 You can't sell it or trade it (legally) Value of over 15,000 jazz CDs + 3000 jazz LPs, many of which are out of print and collectable = priceless

So Live @ San Francisco has a backup hard drive, that still is little solace in case of fire, burglary, earthquake, etc., unless that backup is in another location. I'm not exactly a Luddite, but I believe physical copies of commercially issued CDs have more merit than digital copies on a hard drive or two. Then again, with the insane prices of San Francisco real estate, physical storage of a large collection may be a problem for him.

There's a new Spike Jones collection, consisting of 2 DVDs with 4 television shows, an interview and a CD of performances. It's called Spike Jones: The Legend.

Cadence Magazine
Ken Dryden replied to JohnS's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I still subscribe to Cadence, though I quit writing for them years ago. The paltry pay makes it hard to justify the time and effort spent compared to my other options. I still believe that it covers more imports and obscure releases than any other magazine, though not always in a timely manner. They could easily purge all of the smooth jazz reviews from the hodge podge and shorties section to make room for more significant things. -
Since there isn't a lot of Art Tatum video and film footage, you see a lot of photos of the pianist a la Ken Burns. Interviews and demonstrations by Dick Hyman and Hank Jones, plus contributions by a few others, including Milt Hinton and Tatum discographer Arnold Laubich. The group shots from 'The Fabulous Dorseys' are included, but not the trio material. There's a short clip of Tatum's trio playing "Tiny's Exercise" and the pianist's solo treatment of "Yesterdays" from 'The Spike Jones Show,' but the solo video clip on You Tube of "Humoresque" is missing. It's pretty well done, all in all.

Not to mention that this list is made up of fairly common titles that most board members likely own... What do you do when your computer crashes for good, go rebuy them again?

SteepleChase dates from the 80's, 90's and 00's
Ken Dryden replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
I'm delighted that I started getting serviced again with Steeplechase CDs. Not only have I enjoyed George Colligan, Vincent Gardner and Eric Rasmussen, all of whom I was previously unfamiliar, but I also dig Andy LaVerne, Harold Danko, Rich Perry and many others who have recorded extensively for the label.
