My issue has not been failing to notice that an on line purchase is a CDR, but the deliberate mislabeling by the seller, typically Amazon, that does not let me make an informed decision. I have absolutely no use for on demand CDRs, which are typically missing most of the information found on the original CD.
-
I have yet to see a single SteepleChase Release as a CDR. I did get sent a CDR of Cal Tjader’s Monterey Concert from Walmart online and I returned it.
-
I have returned several products to Amazon and written scathing comments on line for deliberate mislabeling of products as CDs. If any label is going to sell inferior CDRs, at least it should be at a lower price and with proper labeling of what it actually is.

Many of us have been burned when buying a CD online, only to discover it is a CDR. Several labels in the UK have seemed to gone that route exclusively for new products or repressings, including: Acrobat / Acrobat Music Sounds of Yester Year Squatty Roo (notorious for reissues of horrible sounding 1970s bootleg LPs) Feel free to add any labels that have gone exclusively to CDRs.

"Clark Terry and the Singers" on WFIU's Afterglow
Ken Dryden replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
That's a great topic for a show. Of course, Clark Terry shined in any setting. -
I would add:

If I were in such a situation, I would have packages sent elsewhere, or I'd move.

I am reviewing the Ellis Marsalis when it gets here, but the rest of the New Orleans collection was of no interest to me. When I was serviced by PolyGram, they sold back catalog CDs to media for $6.50 per CD, I ordered the 10 CD JATP boxed set and an Errol Garner CD and was surprised to get 10 copies of the Garner CD . When I contacted the label, they told me to keep them and the lady told me she would send me an extra JATP set for my trouble. Within a few days, I received four copies of that boxed set, so they made great gifts for friends who were jazz fans.

I own at most 2 or 3, they aren't CDrs.

It isn't much of a sale, $65 per LP including shipping to the US. But you don't have to buy the entire season's LPs, though they have limited quantities of single titles. I have had some issues with Newvelle Records, which I have shared in reviews when I have received them on occasion. I don't like having to download liner notes and credits. They are more important to me than the poetry included in the bi-fold LP jacket and at the very least, they should be included as a printed insert. I have yet to see any season where I want to buy the entire subscription, particularly at such a high price per disc. I can afford it, but most of us who collect want to choose what artists and bands we purchase, rather than being forced to buy those in which we have no interest.

I've contacted the label to see if they will provide a FedEx prepaid shipping label. My experience on misshipments is that companies always ask for product to be returned to them, rather than sent to the actual customer. Christmas time stress in the French mailroom...

I took advantage of the recent Newvelle Records sale, buying 4 individual LPs, earning me a bonus anthology LP. Today I received a FedEx package from them that contained 6 LPs ordered by another customer in Germany. Evidently someone reversed the last two digits of the order numbers and labeled the wrong boxes.

Herbie Mann (and other jazz flute) recs, anyone?
Ken Dryden replied to Nutty's topic in Recommendations
This was a one off recording, though I did hear this band perform during IAJE in NYC around the time this CD was released. The second recording marked Denny Zeitlin's recording debut. -
I would have aired a Brubeck Centennial program today, but the university shut down access to the station becasue of COVID two weeks ago before I could record any additional programs. Oh, well...only 5 more weeks of reruns....

I seen planty of videos of booby-trapped packages designed for porch pirates. The best ones are those that explode and leave a stinky mess in the getaway vehicles.

The end of The Jazz Standard in New York.
Ken Dryden replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I only made it to the Jazz Standard 3 or 4 times, but I always had a great time there. -
We have been fortunate so far, as we live out in the suburbs with the houses spaced a good bit apart and many of us have video doorbells. The biggest problem we have is misdelivered mail and packages. I had been expecting several Amazon orders and ripped open a package, only to discover it was addressed to the family three doors down (our house numbers are similar, though the last two numbers are reversed). I taped it back and stuck it in their mailbox, being too embarrassed to go to the door. The bigger problem is with inexperienced FedEx drivers, who seem to drop off packages at random. One was left that was for someone at least 4 to 5 doors away. Yesterday morning the doorball sounded before 9 am and I discovered two long, heavy boxes taped together on our porch. Fortunately I caught the driver's attention before he left the area and he supposedly took them to the correct address, a door or two down the street. Fortunately, I've gotten to know the regular FedEx driver on this route so he doesn't make these kinds of mistakes.

No idea. I've purchased one or two Hi-Hat releases and the audio quality depends more on the quality of the source. I don't think they do much in the way of remastering, editing or documenting the releases. At least one release, the Joe Pass Las Vegas CD, is something I recorded off satellite years ago when working in public radio. I wouldn't be surprised if they used the tape I made, since I shared it with at least a couple of Joe Pass collectors. I edited out most, if not all, of the host, Alan Grant, who sometimes talked too long and commented over the music.

I think that I mentioned the lazy postal employee who stuck a mailer with an out of print LP between my mailbox and its flag on a hot summer day instead of taking a ten second (at most) walk to my porch. The LP was warped beyond belief and I have never found another copy.

That is the one I was referring to in my earlier post. Sorry that I missed your reply. The really rare Ristic 2 LP set from the 1960s of Fats Waller & Friends recorded in his home is all but impossible to find, though I recently ran across a Sounds of Yesteryear CD reissue. I've ordered it and will compare it to the files that someone shared with me of the original set. The package arrived today and it is another @$%&%$$!!! CDR, sold at a premium price. The hell with both Amazon and the duplicitous UK label Sounds Of Yester Year. Like Acrobat, they aren't worth a damn!

The American nephew of Reichs Marshal Herman Goering was a US B-17 pilot, who bombed his homeland. I've just got started reading it.

looking for: 30's jazz recommendations
Ken Dryden replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Recommendations
Chewy: I might be selling some Art Tatum LPs from the 1930s if you are interested. I've got to crosscheck to see what is duplicated on other releases. -
I like our FedEx driver, but one day we got a package for a neighbor four or five doors away. Maybe someone subbed for him that day, I think he would have remembered my name after several conversations with him.
