The thing that puzzles me the most about this stupid situation is the ban on advertising. How can any business survey at 25% capacity if they can't even promote themselves? Too many politicians are in the pockets of big business and have no clue about the damage they do to small businesses, regardless of which party they label themselves. Maybe Spike has deeper pockets than we think, but Smalls and Mezzrow have been two of my favorite haunts on visits to the city in recent years.

I had heard that Philology owner Paolo Piangiarelli had a nervous breakdown. The last time that I tried emailing him a few years ago it bounced back as undeliverable. I wish him well, as he was a devoted jazz fan but he struggled to get American outlets to publish reviews of his CDs. After AllMusic.com quit assigning them, I had little luck pitching them to anyone else.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Ken Dryden replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I just finished listening to this set today. -
What do expect from a city run by a moronic mayor and a clueless city council? They are doing their best to kill off small businesses like jazz clubs with their draconian, nonsensical edicts. Spike Wilder is hardly getting rich running such small capacity clubs with low cover charges where people tend to nurse one drink for an entire set, even prior to COVID-19.

The USPS continues to find ways to underachieve. I sold a CD on Discogs and shipped via media mail on 12/29 to Indianapolis. It next tracked in Cinncinnati on January 6. Then on February 25, it arrived in Pittsburgh. The empty package was returned to me today (3/19) by my carrier, with one end torn completely off - no sign of the tape I used to seal it) and it obviously had water damage. It was sealed in a bag with a form letter apology. I was told that I could get my postage refunded by going to the post office where I mailed it. No dice, I was told the claim had to be filed on line. When I tried to do that, it was automatically rejected, since it has been over 60 days. Screw the USPS...they need to be reformed or at least driven out of handling packages.

I don't have a specific budget in mind, but thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.

Thanks, I will look them up. Search engines have been useless.

I finally got around to watching this DVD, which I have only owned since the review copy arrived in 2006. It was just as delightful as I imagined. I was fortunate to see Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone on three different occasions together: a 1984 concert with Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum, Eddie Daniels' Benny Rides Again tour (with Makoto in place of Mulgrew Miller), along with the IAJE 2002 preview duo concert of their forthcoming Virtuosi CD.

I am thinking about taking the plunge and investing in a SACD player. Any recommendations about particular brands/models and online vendors is greatly appreciated.

None to be found there.

I had several SACDs with their unique jewel boxes broken in shipment. Are there anyone online sources selling them? So far I have had no luck finding any.

I wonder what Lord’s source was for the rejected status. They are listed as unissued in the Blue Nite Discography. -

I wonder why the Walter Davis trio tracks were omitted from the One Night With Blue Note Preserved CDs? Walter Davis: piano, Reggie Workman - bass, Art Blakey - drums Criss Cross Bud's Bubble I've Got Rhythm Six additonal songs from other sets were omitted as well... -
I know there have been books about jazz in film, but I thought it would be fun to discuss favorite jazz soundtracks and appearances by artists performing in films. Appearances (cameos to fuller shots): The Fabulous Dorseys: Art Tatum in two segments, with dialogue in the foreground over his music. The Snows of Kilimanjaro: A brief appearance of Benny Carter playing alto saxophone in a night club scene. Anatomy of a Murder: Duke Ellington composed and performed the soundtrack and appears on camera as a musician named Pie-Eye. Terminal 1: Tom Hanks plays a character trying to complete his father's quest of getting the autographs of all of the musicians who appeared in the Great Day in Harlem photo. Benny Golson appears on camera, has a bit of dialogue and plays on camera. King of the Gypsies: David Grisman wrote and played the music for this film, though no soundtrack album was ever released. Stephane Grappelli is part of the band. Soundtracks: Anatomy of a Murder: Duke Ellington composed and performed the soundtrack with his band. Paris Blues: More music by Duke Ellington written for film. Issued on LP. The Silent Partner: Oscar Peterson composed and arranged the music for this Canadian film, issued by Pablo on LP. The film was released as a full screen DVD, starring Christopher Plummer and Elliot Gould. The allstar group includes Clark Terry, Milt Jackson, Benny Carter and Zoot Sims. I Want To Live! The terrific soundtrack by Johnny Mandel, played by a strong group including Gerry Mulligan. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the remake): Denny Zeitlin leads a small group and plays electronic music that he composed for the film. He gets a kick out of introducing his ballad "Love Theme 'From Invasion of the Bodysnatchers'" when he plays a club. The CD reissue is challenging to find at a reasonable price. Scott Joplin: This bio film features performances and arrangements by Dick Hyman. A highlight is the duo piano cutting contest played by Dick Hyman and Hank Jones. Eubie Blake has a brief cameo as the judge booting pianists from the contest. Issued on LP by MCA. Ordeal By Innocence: Donald Sutherland stars in this Canadian film, adapted from an Agatha Christie mystery. Dave Brubeck composed and played music for the film, using his quartet with Bill Smith. Sadly, no soundtrack was released.

At least one artist played bop before then at Carnegie Hall... September 18, 1949 .

I remember the audio being so-so, while the medley has a clipped intro, which is faded in.

This 2 LP set from UK has been in my collection for decades, it is from that very concert. No Ahmad Jamal... .
