  1. I'm with Brownie. Herbie Nichols. If I am allowed to cheat a bit, I would put the Carter/Bradford as my Mosiac Select of choice.
  2. Been lurking on this post since it was started and still cannot name one ... working on it.
  3. Been wanting to supplement the Master Takes for years and finally found a copy at a decent price.
  4. Interesting read. Thank you for sharing. Spotify is frictionless, but as a collector it does little for me.
  5. One for Eric is sublime on this excellent album.
  6. Resurrecting an interesting thread. Also like comparing my response to the now. In heavy rotation in 2013: Bill Dixon and Art Ensemble of Chicago.
  7. I recently picked up the box set (original 11 CD from EmArcy). Long been on the essential, must list own and found it at a nice price at a local shop. As expected Brownie, Roach, Land are flawless. I've heard most of the discs in the past. That said, I'd gladly give back tracks with the presence of Maynard Ferguson piercing my speakers and bleeding my ear drums. Maybe he was having an off night, but I have little serious familiarity with Ferguson's music. As a kid in the 70s I recall him and a name association game would yield unfavorable memories (apologies to fans of his - just giving personal opinion). How in God's name did he share a stage with Brownie? It seems cruel to him. Again, maybe it was just a bad night for Ferguson.
  8. Vinyl - long gave that up before it went out of vogue and then came back in. Too many moves and to much to store. Frankly, I admit to being conditioned by iTunes and having my library ripped and stored in one source and I can access all of it remotely with my phone, play it thru a DAC and good speakers. Chalk one up to convenience. CD's - I dig liner notes, box set booklets, etc. I read them constantly. Can't get those from streaming or download and don't care to look for them on the interwebs. I rip and keep. Toying with the idea of reupping for the CD player, hi-fi, but until the laptop dies, I'll stick with iTunes as a storage device. Streaming, Downloading - Zero interest. Enjoy going to record shops (fortunate to be in a market where they still exist). Again, I need the liner notes. Also, I don't look for or try to discover "new" music. My collection is better than Spotify, so no need for it. Online: if I can't find a CD at the store (new or used), I have no problem going to Amazon or Discogs. Value is there and I'm ok with waiting until packages arrive.
  9. I'd add Archie Shepp/Bill Dixon Quartet (LP same title). Maybe even a little Black Gypsy.
  10. I wish I could get back the 90 seconds I wasted on that article. Journalism is more dead than jazz as displayed by Mr. Myers. My favorite line is Glasper thinks the jazz community has not given him his just due. Ha! That's ok. He can keep it real by playing the classics like New Edition, Johnny Gill and Boys II Men. I'll stick to those chumps named Mingus and Duke.
  11. Not sure I qualify as into west coast jazz, but Mingus and Dolphy would be prime catalysts.
  12. Kicking myself for not picking up the Bee Hive set when I had a chance a few years ago.
  13. Revisiting this of late and Billy more than holds his own with a couple of giants.
