  1. Max Roach - "It's Time" (Impulse, 1962) -- 16 voice wordless choir Billy Harper - "Capra Black" (Strata-East, 1973) -- 5 voice choir on side 2 Andrew Hill - "Lift Every Voice" (Blue Note, 1969 & 1970, two full-length sessions) -- 8 and 7 voices Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson - "The Angels of Atlanta" (enja, 1981) -- w/ the Harlem Boys Choir and soloists Donald Byrd - "A New Perspective" and "I'm Tryin' to Get Home" (Blue Note, 1963 & 1964) -- 8 voice choir on both dates Freddie Roach - "All That's Good" (Blue Note, 1964) -- small vocal group (not sure how big, my copy is 1,000 miles away at the moment) That's all that I have -- with the top four dates being the "heaviest". I just found a used copy of "It's Time" on Saturday (first time ever hearing it), and it's really a monster session -- with especially great blowing from Clifford Jordan, Richard Williams, and Julian Priester, plus Mal Waldron and Art Davis are on the date too -- Yeow!! Coincidentally I also replaced my lost copy of "Capra Black" this weekend, which I hadn't heard in several years, and it's a monster too. What else is notable in this genre? I know there's another Max Roach date with choir ("Lift Every Voice and Sing", Atlantic 1971), which is on my wish-list now (haven't ever heard it) -- how is it?? Also, I understand Billy Harper has a more recent DVD with some big chorus (I think it was recorded in Poland, iirc) -- how's that?? Also, does anybody know if these kind dates were recorded "live" with the musicians and the chorus performing together in real-time?? In the case of those from the 60's and early 70's, I can't imagine them being done that way (especially the Andrew Hill, for instance) -- and I would have to believe that the chorus was overdubbed. Anybody know for sure??
  2. Well, the ultimate answer to this question is clearly Sun Ra. Often corny (in the extreme) -- but depending on one's perspective -- the more he is, the more he isn't. Thinking of his arrangements of standards here, like Alone Together, and such. Probably doesn't apply to his piano playing specifically, as much as the overly sweet horn arrangement and his vocal rendition -- but the principle is the same as the concept described in the OP.
  3. Apparently I don't because I never would have put Mehldau in this category. My thought exactly. Mehldau might be a lot of things, but 'corny' ain't one of them.
  4. Mehldau? Interesting. Depending on my mood, I sometimes find him to be cerebral to the point lacking emotion. (Or maybe I'm confusing my own emotional response to how (I think) he doesn't swing in any conventional sense.) Don't get me wrong, I really LIKE Mehldau (or at least most of the time). But I find him to be 'emotional' in a rather technical way, if that makes any sense. Or, getting back to the language in the OP, I almost never find him to be corny. If anything, he's off the chart in the opposite direction -- i.e., he's 'hyper-sincere', sometimes even to his own detriment.
  5. Still pining for Tyrone Washington's "Roots" on CD, which is every bit as strong as "Natural Essence" -- and, I think "Roots" is even stronger. I am aware of a couple other 'Perception' dates having been issued in CD, though I don't know the circumstances of their issue. Here's the details of the date... Date: 1973 Label: Perception Tyrone Washington (ldr), Tyrone Washington (ts), Hubert Eaves (p), Stafford James (b), Clifford Barbaro (d) a. a-01 You Are The Sunshine Of My Life - 5:00 (Stevie Wonder) b. a-02 Spiritual Light Of The Universe - 5:07 (Tyrone Washington) c. a-03 Roots - 5:00 (Tyrone Washington) d. a-04 Submission [aka To The East Side Rock] - 4:45 (Tyrone Washington) e. b-01 War Is Not For Men - 6:00 (Tyrone Washington) f. b-02 You Don't Know What Love Is - 7:00 (Don Raye, Gene DePaul) g. b-03 1980 - 7:20 (Tyrone Washington) All titles on: Perception LP 12": PLP 40 — Roots (1973) LP issue gives no recording date - 1973 is issue date.
  6. Eddie Henderson's cover of "Masqualero" from "Time & Spaces" (Sirocco Music Limited, 2004) When done right, "Masqualero" could be my favorite Shorter tune.
  7. For anyone else who needed to do this... 16 lbs and 35 lbs respectively. 16 lbs is not much!
  8. Had one of those watches too -- it also gave up the ghost (for me, not just for 'ghost of miles') about 10 years ago. I have a nicer BN watch somewhere around here too, but never liked it quite as much as the simpler one.
  9. Didn't care for the Blakey Prestige date(s) much. Bought 'em cuz Woody was on 'em, but I seem to remember that band not really gelling (did they even play live much?). Kind of a disappointment, as I recall.
  10. Moog Music designers carrying on the legacy of visionary founder, Robert Moog, have announced the first major technical Theremin design advance in over 40 years... Introducing the Moog Polyphonic Theremin
  11. Some work for me, some done. Seems to be about 50/50.
  12. How is Caliman's "Celebration" from 1977?? Lineup sure looks good... hadley caliman (ts, fl) hotep cecil barnard (p) david williams (b) elvin jones (d)
  13. Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant Hi-Res Photos, taken by unmanned drones.
  14. UP TO... 50% off. Worth reading the fine print.
  15. Spared you having to cajole the thing down to your PC, thusly.
  16. I fear nothing short of dates from Miles Davis' euro-tour in late '67 (and the like), would even remotely sell enough to be considered worth the investment (purely from an economic perspective). AND YET, look at all the wild and crazy shit that continues to become available from Dusty Groove. How does THAT stuff get reissued, while virtually none of the suggestions already proposed make sense? I could cite 50 discs currently available on the Dusty site (maybe more like 100), that seem no more commercially viable than the suggestions here. Perplexed.
  17. A genuine an respectful question, Chuck. Are there any titles you can think of, that both fit JLH's criteria, and make economic sense?
  18. How silly. Clearly it should read... Nat King Cole At THEIR best
  19. FWIW, whatever one I have is in a Jewel Box (not a digipak).
  20. from Mother Jones: What's Next, Hello Kitty Chainsaws?
  21. All my discs are all 1,000 miles away from me at the moment, so I'm not entirely sure (except to say it's definitely NOT the one with "Mountain in the Clouds"). From the previous thread I linked to, I believe it is the one that has the following track-listing (so if there's only two 'Collectables' versions, then the "Inner Space" one appears to be the one). 1 Straight Up and Down Corea 12:32 2 This Is New Gershwin, Weill 7:38 3 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:05 4 Litha Corea 13:29 5 Inner Space Corea 9:20 6 Windows Corea 8:45 7 Guijira Corea 12:18 8 Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano Corea 5:07 THIS POST kinda confirms that the 8-track version is the most complete, and the Japanese issue of it has great sound -- and it would appear that the 8-track "Collectables" edition is the same mastering. The SQ on the "Mountain in the Clouds" one is kinda sad (to put it politely), as best I recall (had it years ago too).
  22. Perhaps the same three that are supposedly unique to this CD?? JOE HENDERSON "In 'n' around" CD 2005 Track list: 1. VISA (CHARLIE PARKER) 2. ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE (JEROME KERN) 3. RUE CHAPTAL/ROYAL ROOST (TENOR MADNESS) (KENNY DORHAM-KENNY CLARKE) Recorded live at “Villa Imperiale”, Genova (ITALY) on 9 july 1987 4. RECORDA ME (played by BOBBY WATSON solo) 5. THE KICKER (played by FABIO MORGERA group) 6. INNER URGE (played by JERRY BERGONZI quartet) 7. AFRO-CENTRIC (played by VICTOR LEWIS group) 8. OUT OF THE NIGHT (played by VITO DI MODUGNO/FABRIZIO BOSSO group) 9. MODE FOR JOE (played by SALVATORE TRANCHINI quintet with FRANCO AMBROSETTI and JERRY BERGONZI)
  23. Previous discussion, where Chuck suggested the Collectables version was perhaps the same mastering as the previous East West Japan HDCD. I haven't heard both, but to my ears, the Collectables version sounds really good too me -- certainly better than some Collectables editions of other sessions.
  24. It's something people will probably pay for... You know, as opposed to say, reading the NYT on-line.
