  1. Yeah, yeah, that's it. (Google image search) Anybody else here think that's what Merritt is playing in the very first clip?? Kinda looks like it to me.
  2. Thank god the Jayhawks made it into the Sweet 16, or else my wife would sink into a week-long depression. Whew!!
  3. Two I've really enjoyed lately. Both very deep recordings, particularly the Mal... John Hicks "Steadfast" (Strata East, 1975) Mal Waldron "On Steinway" (Teichiku, 1972)
  4. Lost, as in truly lost? (like 80+% of silent movies? - as in 'lost to the sands of time'), or 'lost' in the sense of never to be released ever again? If it's the latter, than I'd say pretty close to 40%, and maybe more like 50%. Then again, if more and more opens up via downloading (legit), then perhaps not a whole lot worse than 40% currently, and potentially things could open up and bring that down a bit closer to 30% (but that's a pretty big if).
  5. Today's comic there...
  6. I think I just saw a bass like that here in KC a couple months ago, the guy in Dave Douglas' group. Pretty sure it was plastic (see below) A bass-playing friend of mine in the audience said that was "the kind of bass they all used down in Cuba" (iirc). Spontoon, you were there that night, any memory of what Jeff said that was? Here's the guy (Brad Jones), here's a pic with that bass I was talking about (it doesn't quite show the whole thing, but close)... And this footage is fairly good, of the same instrument...
  7. Interesting read... Written by a Delta pilot on approach to Tokyo during earthquake (Might take 10 or 15 seconds to load if Reddit traffic is high.)
  8. If I'm not yet in Washington DC, I'll be there for sure!! If I was a betting man, I'd say I'll be here through about mid-May, so I'll just hafta wait and see.
  9. I had Point of Departure for 2-3 years back in college in the early 90's (filing it under Dolphy at the time, because it seemed like his voice dominated). Then I bought the big Hill Mosaic (my 3rd ever Mosaic, after Don Cherry (to get my feet wet), and the Jackie McLean). It was a good 3-5 years more before I really started to "get" Hill. "Black Fire", being the first date on the Mosaic, I probably listened to most, and connected with the fastest (didn't hurt that Joe Henderson was/is almost my favorite tenor player). To this day, I generally break out the big Hill box once or twice a year, and listen all the way through top to bottom. I often go a couple months or more without listening to ANY Hill at all -- but when I do, I generally listen to a LOT for a few days or more. What I like most about Hill, is that his music always sounds fresh to me, and still has lots of surprises even after years of repeated spins.
  10. When I recommend a Hill album to someone who's never heard one, that's usually the one I mention. "Black Fire" is the gateway drug.
  11. I wouldn't be surprised to see if they drop it to $10 at some point.
  12. What speed was that? I'm aware of 78, 45, 33 1/3, & 16-ish RPM's (forget if the 16 had a fraction after it), but I've not heard of any other.
  13. Thanks guys! Nothing special planned specifically for today (I'm back in KC working on getting our house on the market in 6-8 weeks), while Mrs. Rooster is in DC). She'll be back here in a couple weeks, so we'll have a nice dinner out then. I will spin some Hill today -- and I've been really diggin' these Schoenberg chamber group pieces lately (probably my favorite of all his works), and may give them another spin today too... Serenade, op. 24 (1920/23) (baritone, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, violoncello) Quintet, op. 26 (1924) (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon) Suite, op. 29 (1925) (E-flat clarinet, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, violoncello, piano)
  14. From TPM: Six Ways Fukushima is Not Chernobyl
  15. Yes, with an 'e', although no Internet search for him is complete unless you check both.
  16. and the other two clips (since it appears you can't post more than two Youtube clips in the same post)...
  17. Wow! That's what I was looking for. Nathan Page is a particular favorite of mine (though he's fairly obscure). I think this is probably the footage (best as I can tell, that's Nathen Page on guitar)...
  18. Maybe expand the name of the "Jazz Radio & Podcasts" to include "TV & Film" and maybe a catch-all "etc..." No need for a separate forum (IMHO), but I agree - it would be good to have a more logical place to go for such media discussion and announcements.
  19. No, Salieri didn't really throw his harpsichord off a bridge after hearing Mozart play at a club. And I'm late to the party acknowledging this first rate zinger.
  20. I believe that's what I've read here and elsewhere (that that was the last session), but I'm no authority. There's also another thread around here about a live appearance years later (not too much before Hank's passing), but that wouldn't have been a recording session. (And I think there was an audio clip loaded to Youtube, iicr.) Anybody got a link to that thread? It was sad to read/hear, but poignant in a way.
  21. Couple more clips with Tolliver and Cowell... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3byftQ9YIo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoMAp9ivQtw
  22. Another quick "status report" source (for each reactor), from the NYT.... Status of the Nuclear Reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant
  23. Two words: Frank Zappa. Get checked regularly.
