SAM RIVERS Quartet -- 2008 Topeka, KS jazz festival
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Maybe they stuck the crazy 'free-jazz'-leaning guy on during the dinner hour, so all the "regular" jazz fans can slip out and grab a bite, and not miss a beat. I started typing his half in jest, but the more I think of it -- that may well be their actual thinking. -
Yeah, but it's spelled "Hen3ry".

10, maybe closer to 15 years ago, I had a crazy double disc compilation (of mostly or all(?) unreleased tracks), that included a cool remake of Rawalpindi Blues from Escalator Over The Hill. Anybody remember this?? Don't have this release anymore (lard only knows what happened to it), but there were a handful of interesting tracks among a lot of less-than-interesting ones. Other clue -- there was a "music box only" version of some tune, maybe a standard (Monk?), or perhaps another tune by Carla. Come to think of it, the whole thing might have been some tribute to Paul Haines. (Or maybe not, my memory of this thing is pretty minimal.) Anybody remember this thing??

Holy crap, I just saw that Sam Rivers is playing at the Coleman Hawkins Legacy Jazz Festival this year. I am SO THERE. Here's the complete line-up for the whole fest: http://www.hawkinsjazzfest.org/schedule.html I know most of the guys in the two bands immediately preceding Sam on the schedule (all from Kansas City), and they're all VERY well worth hearing. Anybody else from KC going / want to go?? Car-pool?? (I'll be glad to drive -- '06 Prius.) SAM RIVERS!!!

You know, somebody on this very board was on a couple (released) live dates with Von... Hey Free, any thoughts on these?? Any other performance(s) with Von?? Has anybody else here played with Von??

Really?? PM about to be sent!!

Or maybe Abe Vigoda?

Glad that March is out of the way, so I could finally post this... http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1807240

If he shows up --- is right. I "almost saw him" play about 15 years ago at a club in in St. Louis, and a couple buddies of mine have collectively "almost seen him" about 3 or 4 times (I forget the running total). If his lip is that shot, the least he could have done in recent years is pick up the EVI -- at least that would give him something to play, and still make gigs. I'm assuming there's more to the story here than just his lip -- which I don't doubt is also a problem (I'm not suggesting it isn't).

Was just wondering what the release date was of this project -- apparently April 15th according to the first post in this thread. Looking forward to this one, and just a bump to get this back on people's radar.

Saw her perform live here in Kansas City early in 1995, barely 4 or 5 months after I first moved here. Was like nothing I've ever seen/heard before, or since. Enjoyed it quite a lot.

Well, the coupon works -- cuz, ouch, my wallet's $200 lighter than it was a couple hours ago. Half of that was just two items: the Miles Cellar Door box, plus another "80's Underground" alt-rock boxset from Rhino. With my B&N membership, the overall discount on the box sets was something like 52% off -- and 46% off on everything else. Ther other jazz things I picked up were a live Jeremy Pelt progressive date ("Shock Value"), Trio Beyond (DeJohnette, Goldings & Scofield), the latest live Brad Mehldau double-disc (the new one just out this week), and the Travis Sullivan's big band "Bjorkestra" disc. That, and a bunch of rock/pop stuff nobody here will care much about. I'd buy a lot of shit from B&N at 50% off. But without that kind of discount, I'm not likely to buy any more than ONE disc from them in any given year. Selection was better than I was expecting. May try again on Sunday at a different B&N elsewhere in the KC area.

Is this valid at all B&N stores? Has anybody else had any luck using this coupon at your local store?? I am a member of their frequent buyers club, and I get e-mails from them all the time -- but I didn't get an e-mail with this particular deal (and nothing even close to it). I really don't want to walk up to the counter with a dozen CD's, and two box sets (after having spent probably over an hour going through their whole jazz and classical inventory -- only to find out that it wasn't valid for me (like it was only valid for certain B&N customers), or worse - that it wasn't real in the first place. Edit: Yes, I see it's actually from the B&N website, which probably is a good sign.

Look back through this thread again. I don't have time to find and quote the right post(s) that I'm sure are there, but the info is there (from my memory). In short, the color negatives (or however they existed in the files) were LOST for these specific 9 covers --- 9 covers which weren't actually used back in the day. Only the B&W "negatives" (or "positives") were ever found. So then the only way to use these covers was to "colorize" them after the fact. They were originally in color, but decades later -- there was no way to know what the colors originally were -- so the modern EMI people had to just guess, and/or make good choices. -

Were all nine of the "colorized later" Reid Miles covers released on LP?? And if so, domestically, or only as imports? (and if so, from where?) See my HUGE post above, with the nine covers. I'm about 90% sure I've seen an LP of the Leo Parker (about 8 years ago), and as best I can recall, it was a French 'DMM' issue. (90% sure it was 'DMM' - but only about 70% sure it was French. I think I bought it for somebody here on the board, and sent it to them - come to think of it.) Bringing this up because someday I'd LOVE to find a full-size LP of the Sam Rivers date, as much for the cover as anything. -
Just this past Monday, Spontooneous hooked me up with a turntable and something to play it through (the first time I've had one in close to 10 years -- thanks Joe!!), so the last couple days I've been spinning vinyl I've had for 20 years or more, most of which I probably haven't listen to since I first got it -- and certainly not since the mid to late 90's. This include four somewhat less well-known Sam Rivers LP's... Crystals (ABC IMpulse, 1974) Sizzle (ABC Impulse, 1976) The Quest (Pausa, 1977) Contrasts (ECM, 1980) Thus, I'm starting this here thread to discuss ALL THINGS SAM RIVERS. I figure we all know most or all of the Blue Note stuff (sideman dates included), and his BN stuff is certainly fair game for this thread -- but what about all the rest?? I've got a bunch more Sam on CD, but I'll have to dig through things to find all of it. Meanwhile, list and discuss your favorites...

The fact I'm laughing so hard means I understand all this, which is probably scary.

Denny Zeitlin Mosaic Select
Rooster_Ties replied to Larry Kart's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I haven't ever heard any of Zeitlin's columbia sides before (well maybe one LP, almost 20 years ago) -- but based on the AMG reviews I just read, and the promise of something "little too edgy for Columbia at the time" -- I'm pretty sure I'll be picking this one up. Especially for the "little too edgy" stuff. -
organissimo heads into the "studio"
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I just sent you guys $200 through the "donate" button. (Check your e-mail, Jim.) NOW how funny am I?? No rush getting them recorded for me. Work 'em into your live book, and play 'em some (at least a few places where you can), and get 'em in your bones a bit. You've got two years (a.k.a. "an eternity") to make good on 'em, before I start makin' any noise. And no they don't absolutely have to be from "Mother Ship" and "That Certain Feeling". Let me spin my entire Larry Young and BJP catalogs over the next couple months, and I'll get back to you with a list of potential tunes. I'll make the list fairly long, so there'll be lots to choose from. And Jim, you do have a copy of "Mother Ship", right?? -
