  1. Just stumbled across on-line samples of nearly this entire release (everything but the last track). HERE -- I have to hit 'play', then 'stop', then 'play' again to get them to work (at least on my PC). (Some of it) Sounds more interesting that I had expected. Might try to track this one down after all.
  2. So, with the exact same timing -- could you net a similar (but different) effect on upright?? Could an all-acoustic group pull this tune off?? (Trumpet, Piano, Bass, Drums to start with. Don't have time to watch the clip again to see what else you'd need. Probably guitar.)
  3. A different kind of grease... Bob Stewart (Live) w/ Steve Turre, and that looks like "Smitty" Smith to me on drums. Is the trumpet player anybody I should know?? How about the guitar player?? Looks like something from the early 90's - with that neckless rock electric guitar, and it's "Hiram Bullock"-esque player. Pretty hip. I'd buy an album of this stuff for sure. Edit: Listened to it again, and man I'm REALLY likin' the non-trad jazz guitar in that context with the horns. I gotta find me some of that!!
  4. Well, here's something I posted about the man, on a similar theme back in 2004...
  5. Any chance we can get some of the Keith Jarrett catalog run through this process??
  6. One problem that could be solved with this magic berry, is -- how do I put this delicately... Zappa in New York, disc #1, track 3
  7. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=149079 <-- original thread on the Steve Hoffman board Thought this might be of interest to some of us here in Organissimo-land...
  8. I'm very late in posting to this thread (long story), but I also want to offer my heart-felt condolences.
  9. And Miles was even on one of them.
  10. Not a Rickroll. After you see and hear this, you'll WISH it was a Rickroll, trust me. http://www.break.com/index/worst-karaoke-session-ever.html (Right up there with "teen beauty pageant trumpet gal tries to play a severely microtonal version of the Star Wars theme".)
  11. I really love the "You! Miles" series. I'm with Larry -- Leo Smith is amazing on all this electric Miles material. (And the two later volumes also include Greg Osby, who I feel is a real joy to hear play in this context.) Roney's good, but Smith is great!!
  12. 30-second clips of all seven tracks to be found here: http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/2694124 (click on the Japanese title to the right of each little 'play audio' gif () Same thing appears to be here, but it wouldn't play the last three clips: http://www.neowing.co.jp/track_for_cdj.html?KEY=VICJ-61558 I'll admit, I'm more than a little tempted by this one, BUT... I really can't stand "St. Thomas" (sorry, a really damn dorky tune to my ears, if ever I've heard one), and the last track on the bonus disc sounds like another 'calypso' thing too (similarly dorky, IMHO). And the clip of track four (of disc #1) sounds like "Mack The Knife" (though that's not the title given, so did this clip just happen to fall on a quote??). And (bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch - I know), I'm only just curious (at best) about Sonny's soprano playing (to put it very kindly). So, all in all, this seems more than a tad expensive, given my particular (and personal, to be sure) probable negative reaction to 3 or 4 of the 7 tracks. If you have any sense at all (as I most probably don't), your mileage will very likely vary.
  13. When I hit the link, I got a "your session timed out" message. MG Same thing here.
  14. Or perhaps a few -- like Miles -- can do some of both, at the same time.
  15. Many, many congrats -- to the entire lot of you!
  16. THE very first search hit on Youtube (for Richard Quest) explains the rope -- or at least confirms his interest in rope. Seriously...
  17. I am/was too. I've been diggin' around on-line for some sound clips or full-length cuts, and I think I've found one long clip (actually two from the same tune, I think). http://www.ut-most.com/?pid=3842559 If you have a flash player loaded on your PC, it should auto-play when the page loads (the player is the widget at the top center of the page). The clip(s) appear to be two 45-second segments of the last tune from the original album: Clockwork Of The Spirits. Interesting...
  18. Other thoughts on this set?? I'm probably going to order the Moncur soon (cuz it's now on the "Running Low" list) -- and have been meaning to pick up the Hill Solo Select for some time now. I know, I know, it's Andrew, so of course I (of all people) need to get it. So I know going to get it one way or another, eventually -- just a matter time, and finances. (I do have the original LP, and should dig it out for about 1/3rd of my answer right there.)
  19. Just called CT, and there's a little over 300 left.
  20. And those of you with this issue of the Hutch, it's time to upgrade!!
  21. From the Blue Note website...
  22. Speaking (typing) as a singer (albeit a choral singer), I can tell you that lying down like that simply sucks as far as being able to really produce much breath support. Probably doesn't matter much if one is really close-miked -- but still, I would tend to think that sofa stuff would really have some kind of negative effect on tone and breath support. Then again, with the way Marvin sings (not full voice, and isn't that practically all falsetto??), maybe breath support isn't/wasn't much of an issue.
  23. Amen to that. Nobody's ever going to change anything, unless they feel it in the pocketbook.
  24. Be afraid, be very afraid... >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpDZ3WotLXY <<< further reading (not just about how dumb the promo video is, but arguably how dumb the instrument is)... "Beamz Infomercial Is Most Stupid Promo Video in History" As best I can tell, breaking the beam merely triggers when the next pre-programmed, pre-set, pre-"timed" series of musical event(s) can start to occur (and continue to occur) -- and reconnecting the beam turns them off. In other words, it’s a complicated (and cool) user interface for turning on and off the equivalent of multi-track recordings of utterly complete crap music, one track at a time. Look at the promo video -- I think that's pretty much it. Could be cool, but really isn’t. Edit: Read the second link I gave above -- it's a little more complicated than just being on/off switches, but the musical result isn't much better than if it had been.
  25. Just stumbled on a few good ones (with LOTS of cool pics -- especially the first St. Louis one), and though this might be a good on-going thread. You can post pics you've taken too... http://www.builtstlouis.net http://milwaukeestreets.blogspot.com http://achicagosojourn.blogspot.com
