In my experience, yes - that's the best way to reach Cuscuna -- at least for those of us in the public at large. About once every year or two I have e-mailed him (via Mosaic, probably some "info @ mosaicrecords dot com" type address, or something similar), and I have usually gotten personal responses from Michael - though occasionally weeks or even months after my initial message (for various good and valid reasons, I can only assume). Best of luck!!

Beatles Anthology 10-hour video box set
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I could also mention that George was probably my favorite Beatle, and the one whose solo career I followed the most (well, "caught up with" the most would be more accurate to say - since I was born in '69). Seeing interview footage with George in the 90's will likely be a highlight for me. -
I just came into a free Beatles Anthology video box set (VHS), which appears to be about 10 hours in length (on 8 tapes, each 75 minutes or so). While I'm no Beatles "fanatic", I am probably a fan -- and I'm guessing there's probably a BUNCH of interesting stuff to be heard and seen here. Has anybody here seen all or most of this?? -- any thoughts?? I'll probably watch the whole thing over several months time (damn, 10 hours!! - that'll take me 3 to 6 months to get all the way through), and then I'll probably try to find another happy home for it. JSngry has the right of first refusal, just cuz.

Just in case anyone is the least bit on the fence about picking up the Henderson, let me say that it is simply one of Joe's finest hours -- one of the two or three best things in his entire catalogue. It's a crime that it's taken until 2007 for this date to finally come out as an individual release all unto itself (save for one obscure Itallian issue several years ago, which was never easy to find -- at least I've never seen one.)

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Way to go, Paul!!! First order of business (once you get settled in, of course)... Go hear Sam Rivers!!! He appears to live in Florida, and seems to have gigs in and around Orlando with some frequency. Edit: And I see that Sam turns 84(!) this year, so git to it!!

anybody else here using Windows Vista yet??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
By the way, the machine we were using before this was still running Windows ME. ANYTHING (including Vista) has got to be better than ME, I do know that much!! That said, I do kinda wish I had gotten my butt in gear earlier so as to have gotten our new machine loaded with the latest and greatest version of XP, instead of Vista. No problems with Vista yet, and no particular complaints (yet) either. Of course I've only been using it for going on barely 6 or 8 hours of real-time use. -
We only just got our new machine (a Dell) late this afternoon, so I've only been using Vista for a few hours now. So far, so good -- but I'm sure there are TONS of things yet to learn; some unknown number of problems yet to encounter; and tons of features never to be used, etc... Anybody else here use Vista yet?? - by choice, or by default. (We didn't really plan to get a new PC specifically timed to the release of Vista, it just worked out that way.)

Let's Reopen Old Wounds!
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The heck they didn't know about the uproar -- or at least they shouldn't have had any excuse for not knowing. Tom Evered (tomatbluenote) should have known -- he posted there enough to know the value and loyalty of (at least some of) the BNBB community. And -- what's his name?? -- the sysadmin of the old BNBB (I hesitate to use the word "moderator" - cuz there was so little "moderating" going on). Presumably he would have known too. Although in his defense, I'm sure he was overworked, underpaid, and probably (almost certainly) one of those who were laid off at the time. One thing's for sure, it certainly was a culture clash. Anybody remember Musicboy? Yeah, that happened here, long after the BNBB's demise -- but that was tangentially related to the Norah thing too, in its own way. But the thing is, I really DON'T think it was all just anti-Norah bashing that brought everything down. Personally I think it was the complete lack of moderation that created a climate for "absolutely anything goes". That, plus a political forum (or was it politics in the "general discussion" forum?? - I forget if there was a separate area for politics), that REALLY allowed things to spin out of control, long before the Norah thing happened. (Remember, here our political forum isn't visible until after you become a member (thank god!), and even then you can opt in or out of seeing the political forum. The number of "politics trolls" is pretty reasonable around here, for the most part.) Here's a short but interesting view of the whole thing (at the time), from the perspective of the Steve Hoffman Forum. Note: the second(!) post in the thread mentions Norah. -
Japanese Prestige CDs for $12.99 @ DG
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I might point out that a few of these could possibly include a track (or perhaps even two?) that was/were cut from the only domestic (U.S.) CD issue of these same albums - since they are often only offered here in the U.S. in "two LP's on one CD" configurations. One example I'm aware of is Patrice Rushen's "Prelusion" -- which is only complete in its Japanese issue. (Now the specific track they included in the Japanese issue, but bumped off the U.S. issue (to make room for her second album) is TOTALLY worthless filler (IMHO), so no biggie there.) But for people looking for "complete" issues, there could be a few lurking in this list from Dusty that represent the ONLY complete digital issue of those albums anywhere on the planet. Any others title jump out at people as being more complete than their only other digital release here in the States?? -
Well, yeah, I guess there is that one too. I guess I'll toss it into the very end of the list, since it doesn't really have a single stylistic angle. But better to include it, especially on a poll on a board without a jazz focus, cuz that might be the one a surprising number of people have, actually.

Is this everything?? And is this in the right chronological order? Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings 1951-'56 Miles Davis/John Coltrane: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings Miles Davis/Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings Miles Davis - In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, Complete Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings Of Miles Davis 1963-1964 The Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel - 1965 Miles Davis Quintet 1965-'68: The Complete Columbia Studio Sessions Complete In A Silent Way Sessions Complete Bitches Brew Sessions Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions On The Corner & Beyond (complete) - what's the name of this one gonna be, remind me again?? The Complete Miles Davis at Montreux: 1973-1991 The Last Word - The Warner Bros. years (complete) Miles Davis: The Columbia Years 1955-1985 (added per the suggestion below) I only own, and the only Miles Davis album I ever need to own -- is Kind of Blue I do NOT own ANY Miles Davis albums I know a couple of these aren't actually available (the "On The Corner" box is not yet available -- and the "Warner Brothers" one got pulled, and never was released except as promos only), but they represent eras of time in Miles' career, so I'm gonna include them in the poll anyway, with an explaination why. Gonna create this poll on the Steve Hoffman forum, just for the hell of it. No idea where the thread will go, but there's so many people there - I figure it might give some perspective on THEIR perspective on Miles. PS: Or should I break down the Prestige material into the mini boxes that have recently (and are presumably gonna come out soon)?? I have to admit I haven't followed the details of them, as that's not an era in Miles career that I've followed too closely in years.

Disc #1 is fantastic (IMHO), and that price is WAY more than fair. Hear Bennie Maupin play with the kind of fire that Wayne had with Miles live in concert circa 1969. Fan's of Miles' "lost" quintet, take note. -

Peanut Butter 2111 Salmonella - Anybody Affected?
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
We had a jar of 2111 too -- that we first opened sometime late in the fall (and ate about 1/3rd of), then it sat unused for a few months, and again used as recently as two weeks ago. Right in the trash it just went, Yikes!! -
Other than the length of my post (and maybe some bolding), I thought my take was rather "relaxed" -- all in all. I even gave you the option to suggest that we let it sit for a few more years. And FWIW, Chuck, I don't recall you telling JSngry to "relax" back when he once said this... Chuck also brought along tapes of the Cherry/Grimes/Blackwell & Lacy/Brown/Higgins trio sessions for Atlantic. the ones that are unreleased. The ones they won't lease him because it's not a big enough deal for them to bother with. The ones that are going to be the cause of some stupid dipshits spending eternity in the fiery torments of HELLLLLL-LA if they never, ever get a chance to be heard by the public, in even a limited release. The music is everything Chuck has said it is. At least everything, maybe even more. Life is a crapshoot, and jazz perhaps even moreso. This great music, this beautiful music cannot be heard even though it is owned by a mega-corporation and even though there is a man willing to pay them real American dollars, the kind that spends(!), for the right to do so. God knows if the music will EVER be released. Then out of nowhere, a stack of acetates show up in a flea market and we've suddenly got a window on one of the key musical developments of the 20th century ready to be released in a few months. Go figure. The point is - make noise when and where it can do some good. The new Uptown release can either cause a sensation or remain one of those "duh, I almost bought it but it seemed kinda, uh..., OLD, and I wasn't sure what the SOWND KWALITY would be like so I passed on it, but now that Blue Moon is offering it for $1.75 I guess I'll take a chance on it, besides, I've got the Verve Parker studio masters and that's all the Bird I think I really need" kinda things that make it nothing short of miraculous that some of us haven't just walked around killing everything with two legs that moves by now. You think I'm kidding, don't you.... We all have choices in this life. Get ready for the Uptown. And FREE THE ATLANTIC TRIOS!!!!
