Any on-line photos out there that demonstate this?? (Or at least give some hint of the packaging configuration.) Haven't seen one of these sets in person yet (and given the state of the stores around here -- I might not see one for months).

Can we get a separate "happy Birthday" forum
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Forums Discussion
All I know is a day or two ago I saw something like 7 or 8 separate "Happy Birthday" threads, all on the front page of the "Today's Topics" search results. How long until the Birthday threads outnumber the non-Birthday threads?? -- Rooster (cranky old man in training, and get off my lawn!!) -

jazz standards we dont like
Rooster_Ties replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
By the way -- my rant wasn't against Monk, or his tunes. I'm just getting tired of hearing mostly uninspired performances of Monk tunes -- and all the damn time, it seems. -
I was gonna start this topic just as a joke (I swear)... But DAMN!! -- I just did a search, and there are OVER 1,000 SEPARATE "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" THREADS!!! -- here on this very board Over 20 pages worth (and the search engine only displays the first 1,000 results -- so who knows how many "Birthday" threads there really are??? ) So my intended joke has turned into a real suggestion -- can we get a new, separate "Happy Birthday" Forum??? (not kidding) ( ) Don't believe me?? Do a general search on the word "birthday" - and limit the results to "Search titles only". 1,000+ hits.

I said much the same thing a few weeks back, and Chuck said he pitied me! He's said worse to me. Think of it as a right of passage!! Where'd you say it?? (Link please - anyvbody??) I must've missed that thread, and would love to catch up with any conversation where that suggestion was made. -

Satin Doll was one of my mom's very favorite tunes, so it always leads me to good memories when I hear it. But C-Jam Blues is an Ellington tune I could certainly do without. (Or at least when small combos perform it.) My other two least favorite standards are... Autumn Leaves How High The Moon And although it pains me to say it, when I'm out and about I'm starting to get more and more tired of hearing Monk tunes. I think there ought to be a two-year moratorium on... Brilliant Corners Epistrophy Evidence Well, You Needn't And maybe everything Monk wrote. Give it a rest for a while, people. Amen! Thank you!!!!! -

Required viewing and listening. Especially you, Moose. (No, I don't know why.) You too, Sangry!!! -
The Harrison album is great, although don't look for anything above and beyond the rest of the Detroit school (it's par for the course, which is still very good): hard grooves, excellent inside/outside improv, and some of Harrison's best sax work. Caveat: the sound blows (sounds like a mid-quality LP rip). Yup, on all counts. It's not quite as good as the best Detroit/Tribe dates I've ever heard (those would be Phil Ranelin -- Time Is Now! and Marcus Belgrave -- Gemini -- both of which feature Harrison, I might add), but it's still quite good. And for only $10, well worth the price. IMHO, get it.

Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!
Rooster_Ties replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Get it. If you turn out not to like it, then sell it here for what you paid for it (or sell it on eBay in a couple years and score $50 to $100 in the process). Pretty low-risk purchase, if you ask me. -
Yup, Steve Coleman is the guy.

Anybody"?? I'm guessing that more than half of us here on this very board own at least one leader-dates by the person in question, and several of us probably own 5 or even 10 of his leader-dates. Gotta be Kenny Garrett!!! No, NOT Kenny Garrett -- but that's a GOOD guess!! Heck, I might have even guessed that myself!! Also, I just checked, and the guy I'm thinking of wasn't on the "Blue Turtles" tour, but rather he was on the "Nothing Like The Sun Tour" in 1987. I've never heard any tapes, but would like to sometime.

So you have a copy of the unissued session? So how is it??? Strong enough to be released someday (hopefully!!) ??? Please provide a review (or at least a mini-review), if you wouldn't mind. Many thanks in advance. Edit: And how long does the entire session clock in at??
-
Wha??? Maybe. I kept Black Codes, and got rid of J-Mood - so perhaps it was pretty snoozy-time. (Still, I kinda of remember J-Mood not being half-bad -- for a Wynton album, anyway.) Hint -- the sub for Branford in Sting's "Blue Turtles" band was an alto player.

I had to read that a few times before I figured out what the heck was going on... I think the idea was that since Martain had done the orchestration, that made it "authentic". And come to think of it, I may be remembering what someone else had said/written/posted about it -- because I can't imagine Martin himself describing it in those terms.

No, actually it's the unreleased session that's the only one listed (since it's the only thing he was ever a "leader" on, officially". The Max Roach date is the one that's not listed (since it's only his "leader" dates - for the moment, anyway). That's why I suggested adding the Roach date, and giving Hasaan a full "sessionograhy" entry. And, oddly enough, there are song titles and everything - for the unreleased date... Date: August 23, 1965 Label: Atlantic Hasaan Ibn Ali (ldr), Odean Pope (ts), Hasaan Ibn Ali (p), Art Davis (b), Khalil Madi (d) a. 9220 The Atlantic Ones (Hasaan Ibn Ali) b. 9221 Viceroy (Hasaan Ibn Ali) c. 9222 El Hasaan (Hasaan Ibn Ali) d. 9223 Richard May Love Give Powell (Hasaan Ibn Ali) This session assumed lost in Atlantic warehouse fire, although Odean Pope reports that Rahsaan Roland Kirk was attempting to have it released, so copies may exist, possibly in Europe. Titles from BMI database. Date: September 7, 1965 Label: Atlantic Hasaan Ibn Ali (ldr), Odean Pope (ts), Hasaan Ibn Ali (p), Art Davis (b), Khalil Madi (d) a. 9285 Epitome (Odean Pope) b. 9286 True Train [aka The True Trane] (Hasaan Ibn Ali) c. 9287 Per Aspera Ad Astra [aka Reaching For The Stars] (Hasaan Ibn Ali) One additional selection 9284 "Metaphysics" - composer unknown. This session assumed lost in Atlantic warehouse fire, although Odean Pope reports that Rahsaan Roland Kirk was attempting to have it released, so copies may exist, possibly in Europe. Speaking of Branford with Sting in the early 80's -- there was another farily well-known sax player who subbed for Branford several times on the "Dream of the Blue Turtles" tour. Trivia question time -- who was it?? Getting back on-topic... EARLY, early Wynton doesn't give me the Hebe-Jeebies nearly as much as almost everything he's recorded after about 1985. I don't mind Black Codes, and J-Mood is still OK (I've owned them both, and still have Black Codes). But my ability to listen comes to a grinding halt with "Standard Time, Vol. 1" (1986).
